How much of your wardrobe is based on trends?

I think there are people who find interesting ways to interpret trends- and then there are people who grab the most uninteresting quintessential items of the season and wear them all at once to prance round shopping malls. I try to fit into the former category. A case in point- I have loved broaches since I was old enough to play in my nana's jewellry box and have collected many over the years. When they started appearing, I thought ooh goody chance to show them off- but mine are unusual one-off pieces that have character and sentimental value- not gaudy ugly-as-hell oversized purple and hot pink rhinestones.

I think trends are fun- they give us direction and starting off points to imagine looks. I have broad ranging tastes, so I think that without trends I would be overwhelmed with choice. At least they give us inspiration and an anchor if we need it. And hell, without trends the uber-hip would have nothing to rebel against, or define themselves in opposition to, would they?

Ooooh ... well said. The former is what I try for too, after too many frustrating years of marching to my own drummer and not being able to find what I wanted. I have finally accepted that in some years certain colors and shapes disappear from the face of the earth. So I take a look at what actually exists, and select from what I believe to be the best of it. (Vintage isn't really an option for me because I remember too many hand-me-downs and garage sale and thrift-store finds as a kid--and not nostalgically either )

i tend to wear classic styles, like i love the "trouser" style pants, which until recently wasn't popular but now it is. i'd say around 15%. I wear what i like, but if it's trendy and still cute, i'd probably buy it.

What a hard question to answer!

I pick what works for my personality and figure. Sometimes it is in, sometimes it is out. If it is REALLY out, I just hold onto it because I have yet to see anything NOT come back in.

The "trend" part only makes it easier to pick up pieces that I personally like. And I do try to not look "dated". But by and large, I know and go with what I like whether it is today's or yesterday's news.

I have worked with ladies who would buy an entire new wardrobe EVERY season (rich husbands). I always wondered if they just through out the out of season clothes or at least donated them to charity...that is being ruled by trends in my opinion.

i think its lame to be a slave to trends-i grew up listening to alt music and me and my friends lifestyle and opinions on fashion were basically wear what you want, dont wear something just because its hip-so i've always felt that way..and as i mentioned in the tattoo thread in body and soul, i dont understand the question that is asked so often on this board-"is this in? will it be in in a few months? i dont want to wear it if its not IN!". ive never understood why ppl think like that.

BUT, on the opposite side of the coin, i hate when ppl stop wearing something they like because its become popular. Balenciaga bags are my fashion obsession at the moment and have been for a while..but lately theyre becoming more popular, there are knockoffs at target, ect. this doesnt make me want to not carry mine..because i really honestly dont care if i'm walking down the street and some woman walks by me and thinks oh thats so lame, shes carrying a balenciaga, thats so over these days, its been done to death! if i like it thats ALL that matters to me. and honestly it bugs me just as much when someone says "i dont want to wear this cuz everyone is" as when someone says "i want to wear this because its really hot right now and everyone who's anyone has got one".

but then like i said...i didnt grow up caring what others think of how i look-its pretty ingrained in me to just not give a damn. i know not everyone is like that...some ppl care about fitting in more and thats fine i guess-we're all different.

sometimes if something is overdone i'll stop wearing it (like peasant skirts) not because its gotten too hot, just because its boring to me because everywhere i look, i see it. i think ppl should wear what they like, period..and i think blindly following trends is for people with no imagination, and/or ppl who are afraid to make a fashion mistake. i think thats a big part of it too-ppl are afraid to wear something and get it wrong. but honestly-who cares? is the world going to end because the outfit you wore today didnt work? no...and hopefully i'tll give you more insight on what DOES work. the ppl who are fashion icons-like kate moss-seem to take risks in fashion. sometimes they succeed and sometimes they fail, but its that boldness and willingness to take a chance and maybe look silly, that makes them the fashion icons they are.

I'll definitely buy trendy things, but only if I like them and I think they'll look good on me and work with my lifestyle.

However, if an item is very trendy, I'll try to spend less money on it than I would on more classic items.

agreed. and not every trend works for everyone, so there's always that to think about. a little under half of my clothing is based on trends.

I find it ignorant when people dont like what other people wear because its diffrent. They dont understand the concept of not wanting to look like everybody else.


I do agree that your clothing is an extension of your personality. What I dont understand is when people say most women dress for other women? I dont think I do. And if this is true does that mean that most women go to the gym for men? I dont agree with people trying to please people like that.

I havnt developed a definate personal style yet as I am only young and am only just learning how to dress for my body type e.t.c. but I dont blindly follow trends because some just dont suit me.
I have also noticed a trend in women going to see style guru's. They are given a swatch book of colours that they are ALLOWED to wear and told what to avoid at all costs. It becomes a religion to them..its completely mad!

My wardrobe consists of, let's see... basic tees, dresses, jeans. That's... very much it. You would never be able to achieve the "boho" look from the clothes I have.

I'm not trying to create my own personal look to differ from everyone else either, I just go with whatever floats my boat and don't pay attention to what's hot in stores.

The situation that I dread the most is when I find a piece of accessory or type of clothing that I really have fallen for and then suddenly the whole rest of the world has fallen with me. Like knitted belts (is that what they're called), luckily I never brought one because now I hate them.

i don't have much to spend a lot on clothes. if i buy something that's trendy i make sure i like it enough to keep wearing it when it's out. in general my clothes definitely aren't very trendy.

I never change my overall 'style' to fit the 'trend style' if you know what I mean? Separate pieces is a different thing cos you can work our way around it into your own style, but buying a whole outfit, like head to toe boho, would be a definition of a fashion victim for me to be honest.
