No one is as bad as Betsey Johnson.
As legend has it, Gaultier started his own Haute Couture as a reaction to having been given the cold-shoulder by Berger as the replacement for Yves? Or that was a catalyst. whether that was true or not, Gaultier has always been more creative, imaginative and more talented than Yves, to me anyways. His HC intro was spellbinding, otherworldly and beyond luxurious to me, and it was achingly elegant. It was visionary. Then somewhere along the way, maybe towards the mid-2000s, it deteriorated into a complete caricature of his most famous, but worst of his work-- it was like his show "EuroTrash".
I suspect maybe that's what his HC clientele (and clients) want from him. I no longer believe HC is the most creative of high fashion, the way it was made out to be in its former golden age. I get the impression HC needs to sell the same way ready-to-wear needs to sell. Just look at what Givenchy is doing with its HC line: By commission only. And I think Gaultier is only presenting what his clientele wants: loud, gaudy shimmering gowns time and time again, conical bustiers, and all things camp and kitsch. His clientele dictates it.
