It's funny how Karl Lagerfeld changes his mind with such conviction. One day he never uses computers, a few months later he can't stop talking about how hot they look. One day he's all, "Retirement is not one of the topics with which I deal. Why should I?" and then he's going to Numero's November issue and handpicking his successor at Chanel:

Lagerfeld replied: “I have a contract for life so it all depends on who I would like to hand it to. At the moment I’d say Haider Ackermann.” Lagerfeld has recently been enamored of Ackermann’s fashions, and had invited him to attend the most recent Chanel show.

Ackermann responded, "What can one possibly say to such a phrase?! Such a compliment! Honored I feel, how can one not be?! In all honesty tremendously, immensely touched especially coming from Monsieur Lagerfeld."

Karl Lagerfeld Developing Lower-Priced Line for Macy’s

Just in time for a certain famous Thanksgiving Day Parade comes news that is sure to elicit gratitude among fashion fans: designer Karl Lagerfeld will soon unveil a fashion venture with Macy’s, multiple sources told UnBeige. We hear that the national retailer has inked a deal with the Karl Lagerfeld brand, owned by private equity firm Apax Partners, for an affordably priced ready-to-wear line that will range from jeans to gowns. The new line, slated to launch with a collection for fall 2011, is also expected to include a major online component, with e-commerce as a key distribution channel.
Speculation about the venture has been rampant since early September, when Lagerfeld announced that he would not be showing his signature collection during Paris Fashion Week and instead had a fast fashion line in the works. At the time, Apax said that they were talking with several potential partners for the new “masstige” play. “I wanted this for a long time,” Lagerfeld told WWD in September. “I prefer to work in another way. I can’t compete with Chanel. I don’t want to be the poor child of myself. This has been my vision for years.”

^ No, from Chanel...but that doesn't include bags, shoes, ads, photography, etc...and his free lance work, Fendi, books, photography- I'd be surprised if he wasn't pulling down $10 Mil a year...

i would imagine his getting MUCH MUCH MUCH more out of the Macy's deal.
i mean, for a one-off spin celebrities get paid CRAZY amounts of money for just posing for a picture
imagine putting their signature in the product...

1 million per collection at chanel sounds reasonable (perhaps a bit understated)... we are talking 6-8 collections a year here
