I know we've been having threads on similar topics, but I sometimes discover and rediscover things in my wardrobe... Some of which I have never even worn.

I've been thinking about actually taking pics of everything I own and storing them on my computer so I can browse through them...

It's a bit embarrassing to me when I find something I forgot I have when I'm looking for something else... And even worse if I buy a duplicate of something!

So, how do you all keep track of what you have? :flower:

It's all on the floor of my closet.

Basically, I have to tip toe through everything and when I see a shirt sleeve that looks like the one I want, I rescue it from the pile. My walk-in closet is not walk-in anymore.

I should treat my clothes better but I really couldn't care less...What I was wearing today is sitting on the floor next to me, and mind you I prize all of this clothing...My floor is clean!

:p

But my point is that whether if it's organised or in a pile, how do you keep track of it?

Only by memory? I actually have a good memory, but there is only so much stuff you can keep in your memory forever...

Agreed. There's a software for cataloging books and DVDs and I've been trying to find something similar for clothing.

I remember most things but every so often I come across something that I forgot about

Exactly my point! :p

Changed the title to be more specific, I hope...

OH. Ya I forget about most of my pieces constantly. The pieces that are in my closet I never forget about but the pieces that I have archived, I couldnt even tell you what was in there...

computer-organized closet ...is tott the new kimora? :o :p

I remember all of my clothes, every single item. I know what my chances are with all of them. however, I'd probably like to photograph my friends', grandma's and mom's closets so i could browse through them comfortably on my computer and see what my real possibilities are. :shifty:

I actually have to organize my closet by color, type of clothing & such just so I can find things but I've heard of people taking pics & keeping catalogs of their outfits on a computer. I have a decent memory but I also do seasonal closet cleanings so I refresh my memory every few months or so of what I've got

I just categorize my clothes by seasons and occasions. It's practical when you live in a country with fluctuating temperatures.

I used to have them seperated by colours, but I grew tired of it and when people would peak at my closet they'd think I was a neat-freak (but I am!).

I can't remember everything I have, but I try to put tops in one pile, jeans in another, sweaters in a third ect. so I won't have to look through it all to find something.

:judge:

I really don't have that much clothes, but still... I could use a better overview, sort of. If you have a pile of black merino sweaters, you might not know exactly what is in that pile because they all look the same folded up, looking from the side... I'll think of something.

tott, I see what you're saying.

What's funny is that I only keep/purchase items that I love... so that means I don't have a whole bunch of clothing to sift through. I am very minimalist, in my style and in the amount of items I own, whether it be clothing or makeup or food... so it's rather easy for me to keep track of my items, as they are all organized.

:flower:

Cool topic. I wish I had the amount of clothing that would allow me to digitally keep track of it all... that seems like so much fun to me, and the epitome of organization.

I have the same "problem".

I also love everything being neat and organized. This would be nice to do, if I'd have enough clothes.

This reminds me of Cher in Clueless, and her polaroids of outfits and electronically controlled rotating racks of clothes.

I don't organize my clothes that way. I do lose track of them, in the semi-sorted piles that I keep them in. But then again, I kinda like rediscovering items that I forgot I had. It's almost like shopping, but in your own closet!

i do this...
it was actually why i started posting in the what are you wearing thread....

and in the shopaholics thread...

i have folders in my iphoto for this..

ahhhhhh----so you see...
there is a METHOD to the madness....;)
i also try to pull out the items i think i will want to use most at the beginning of a season and photograph them together so that i have a seasonal 'wardrobe' in mind as well...

*i never wind up wearing things the way i think i am going to...
but keeping track of what i am wearing has proven to be incredibly useful...
i think that is the best thing to do-document what you are wearing...

I don't generally forget things ;) I use a couple different closets, a main one, and a kind of off-season/archive/linens one. I try to rotate things around twice a year. Given the climate here, though, I wear a lot year-round, most of my summer tops become winter layering pieces ... it's just the wool pieces that come out for winter (although the wool crepe I wear almost year-round).

When I was an SA, I used to tell my manager we needed to get stuff out of the back and onto the floor ... he would tell me, I'm not worried, I know you can sell it even if it's buried in a box in the back

One thing I do is, I hang everything up, I don't fold anything. I know this is supposed to be "not good" for sweaters, but I use good hangers and it really seems to work just fine ... I think that may be an old wives' tale :innocent:

I have been trying to solve this problem for a while. I particularly forget about tee shirts, but have also forgotten about shoes, jackets and jeans.

I do have (digital) folders of photos of outfits; like soft, I thought they would be good for keeping track of items. I also have an excel spreadsheet of jeans :ninja: and a list in my pda.

Recently I bought a grey jacket. When I bought it, I was thinking, I used to have a jacket very similar to this, I think I sold it to Buffalo Exchange. I should have kept it.

About two weeks later, I discovered the old grey jacket in the "broom" closet along with a bunch of other jackets I never wear.

So, I not only lose track of clothes, I lose track of entire closets.
