I think that you'd be better off hand knitting if you want a really fine knit (or using a Dubied if you can find one). The finest yarn I have used on a domestic is a 2ply, but it is perhaps happiest knitting with a 4ply or slighty thicker handknitting yarn. You just have to adjust the tension dial and see what works for you.
 
you mean it's hard to do fine work with a machine? i thought that was the point.. :o

it's the same on a loom
that spacing allows if it turns into a fine fabric to a net
hmm i have to see this lady in person to see the machine. she says she can't explain

When I mean fine knit fabric, I'm talking about almost jersey-like material, with tiny stitches. There are knitting machines that can do them, but they are large and made of steel and tend to belong to universities/swatching companies. If you're talking about a lacy, loose fabric, then you could use a fine yarn on a loose tension for a more 'hole-y' stitch.
 
I got my top finished and pleased with how it turned out as I hadn't done any knitting for ages. Anyway, its given me the confidence to attempt something a bit more complicated, so now I'm knitting a shrug with a bit of a lacey pattern. So far, its going OK, and I've done the back already.
 
that turned out great!! ^ what kind of yarn is that?? i dont know if im committed enough to do a full on sweater...

im working on a hat right now, out of a velvet chenille yarn that felts. i'll post pics when im done

just this morning i learned to knit .. via youtube ~
it had to take some getting used to
i have some of my own threads and yarn and some of it didn't work.. like when i cast on, it was quite tight and i couldn't get the other needle to go through to knit the first row.
i think you need a sort of softer and stretchy yarn?

i was using a cotton which might be too high-twist and a tencel which was quite flimsy, and almost too loosely spun

now i'm using a very thick yarn called quebecoise, a wool
it feels coarse but it's nice and spongey :p i am knitting with some speed now but i think it took me 3 hours just to do a little square.. 4 x 3 "
 
^^^ it took me some time to get the tension right when i first started knitting, but its always fun to play with needle size and wool i never seem to use the recomended needle size for the wool im using :ninja:

and dont worry about speed i've always been a slow knitter and i dont think i'll ever get faster at it :lol:

I still have issues with casting on too tightly. I have to be conscious of knitting looser generally. Because whenever I try to get the right tension for a pattern, it's always too tight. Now I always make sure I completely slide the needle through the loop and not just the tip. It's easier to go back then and knit it on the next row.
 
^right on!! i've used cascade yarn before, it knits up fairly quickly. that's why im thinking i just might attempt it
 
lady.stardust, that jacket looks lovely. What colour are you making it in? Please post pics when you have finished it.
I also cast on tightly, and it is always a relief to finish the first row as it gets easier after that. What casting on methods do people use here - thumb or needles?
 
OK i know this is the how long is a piece of string like question .. but me being the worlds most inpatient person ..

about how long did it take you to learn to knit?? i always start to learn then give up far to easily
 
after doing the instructions in that video^
i notice the knit "V"s are only on the edges of the fabric

the rest is sort of a rib or U shape

so i'm thinking it is a purl stitch, than knit (stockinette?) stitch

The colour is called Natural Mix. It's Patons Classic Wool Merino. It's like a beige-y colour.

I use long-tail cast on. The problem with this method is that sometimes I have a hard time estimating how much yarn I need to leave to cast on the amount of stitches.
 
oh man, i cant wait to see the jacket hon! patons merino is really nice. are you doing single strand or double strand??
