My opinion on MJ (and I think I've said it before) which is saddly being justified with every new collection, is that design-wise, he's not as special as Vogue has made him to be. It's the styling he uses (which I don't really like, but whatever) that makes his collections what they are. IMO, his popularity is due to the fact that his pieces are so simple (as simple as a basic Zara piece) that can be used by anyone without any particular style, and they can be copied very easily in temrs of styling. I'm not saying that all of his pieces are simple (he has the odd evening wear and special dress every now and then) but his daywear is pretty much so.

I agree. With the exception of the coats (all of which I loved) when I first looked at this collection, I felt as though I could get many of the pieces at Club Monaco for much cheaper. HOWEVER, I do love the styling of the show and I think that's what sells the concepts.

I don't like it at all. It just looks like a big mess, I can't see what he was going for really. And it's always like this (me no getting where he's going with his collections), I can't figure out his style.

I hated the shoes the most, and the way it's all layered like he had to much clothes to put on each model so he just kept at it...

I'm sorry but a lot of this collection is not to my liking at all..
some of the models look like they dressed in the dark in the most warm thing they could find.. also a lot of the pieces don't seem to be flattering at all.. not even the models look good in them.. I hope that I don't affend anyone but some of the styling makes them look homeless

as Elli said the layering is just too much

ofcourse there are a couple of nice outfits but from a huge designer like Marc Jacobs and his team I expected a whole lot more..

i like a few pieces quite a bit, i also like the fact that he is returning to his own roots - more authentic imo. the volume/layering is refreshing after years of skin tight jeans/boots etc. i think one needs to look at it as an artistic statement and in that regard, i think he succeeded.

Wow im back from the night and the pumps look amazing! I love the military inspired boots!

i didn't think it was grunge all growed up as some here did, but more his vision for the end of the world. and i don't mean that in a hysterical overreaction kind of way, but those mushroom (cloud) hats and all the layering make me think he wants to protect us from some dangerous atmospheric fallout or something. and it was all so, so...grey. the industrial setting was kind of a giveaway to the palate. in the (near) future, we will be draped and covered and layered, so those nasty particles don't touch our dewy skin. ya know?

but don't worry darlings, the end of the world may be nigh, but the shoes and the gloves and the bags will be fabulous!

i did love the chunky heel t-strapped shoes and thought the touch of cranberry as the only color was beautiful.

i thought it was a natural evolution from the looks he showed for spring.

still, i'm a little worried for him!

:p

I would have to disagree I love the bags with chains! I know he did this before in LV but I love a bag with a lil volume...plus if u get into a fight u can use it as protection LOL  00310m.jpg

Very well said Yamamoto....:flower: . His clothes lack personality/identity... there's no such thing as the MJ signature look.... it's so unconsistent and all over the place!

Kinda true...but isnt the MJ signature look like the oversized sweaters and knit hats? Im seeing a lot of other things combined with a little "Marc Jacobs" to balance everything out

the style review

You know this much about Marc Jacobs: You never know what he'll do next. Replacing the Nittany Lions marching band and his spring parade of high-school good girls gone bad were Philip Glass' symphony Heroes and a troupe of vagabonds in muted layers of plaid flannel, oversize knits, skirts worn atop pants, legwarmers, and tams whose cumulative effect was paradoxically chic.

When pressed for details backstage, Jacobs was vague. "It's about the places I've been, the people I know, world leaders, and winter," he said. The one word he didn't use, though it was uttered by many in the audience, was grunge. Was this a reprise of the seminal collection that lost him his job at Perry Ellis back in 1992? Jacobs wasn't saying. But you saw elements of it in the flannel that was repurposed as strapless dresses, the sweaters that dragged along the knees, and the pants that were so puffy they looked as though they required their own hand pump. (Somewhere, Kal Ruttenstein, the man who famously championed that controversial collection and to whom Jacobs dedicated this show, was smiling.) Come evening, the designer's gorgeous urchins wore black net and metallic sequin dresses distressed to the point of tatters. In the midst of all this were eminently functional, not to mention desirable, coats, capes, shawls, and jackets. And, of course, superluxe bags; this wouldn't be a Jacobs runway without them.

Jacobs is making a habit of 180-degree reversals—gloomy one season, polished and upbeat the next, and now, for fall, disheveled once again. It's remarkable how a man who claimed post-show that he "didn't know what to do" can be full of such captivating ideas.

Well, this is tremendously better than spring (I didn't gag once) and not nearly as good as last fall. I agree with Caffeine that the heavy styling really obscures the individual pieces, but there was lots of interesting use of leather/suede, and I spotted several nice and wearable pieces, including the leather and (I think) suede skirts, the wrap and tie grey coat, and this skirt was perhaps my favorite piece:

In reference to a couple of the criticisms, I think there is "signature Marc," but I think there's some diversity to it (i.e., several different strands), and it's not always all that visible on the runway. I would also say that it is not possible to duplicate a good Marc piece elsewhere for much less ... at least, I have not ever discovered a way to do it.

Also, wrt the "bundled up" look, it would def be a bit much for the weather here, but it is cold in NYC, and I prefer this to Derek Lam's short-sleeved, bare- legged and toed collection from last fall. Even living in the South, I don't buy short sleeves for fall ... So, at least it's practical. I do wish the show had been a bit less heavily styled so I could get a better look at indiv pieces.

I kinda like the shoes in a "they're so ugly they're cute" kinda way ... they seem Asian-influenced to me. I reckon overall this is the Russian influence we've been hearing so much about ...

Liked this bag ...

Tremendous job. Beautiful shades and spot on. Love the baggy leggings (which are more Rick Owens than Theskyens if we all want to play critic).
The mix is entirely his own and I find it irritating to hear that such and such did this seasons ago when no one invents sliced bread every season or is an island onto themselves.
Compliments for reaching past the lady looks ( which were sooo YSL, etc...)

i have to disagree when people say there is no "signature" marc jacobs look...

the marc jacobs look is always a bit off, a bit tatterted...
even in the collections he's done that are more "ladylike," there are still details left unfinished...like the s/s 03 collection...

it's all about the girls he knows and are inspired by: sofia coppola, kim gordon...
every collection is about "the places he's been and the people he knows..."
they all dress a bit off-kilter...even when they are dressed up, there is still something "off"...

his collections are all an evolution of that...sometimes he feels more pretty and feminine and sometimes it's more gloomy...
but essentially it's always "marc"

after seeing the video and looking at the style.com, i adore this collection...
there are many wearable pieces in there...the dresses are divine!
i can't wait to see this collection in person!

I thought Karin elson was heavily pregnant with Jack White's child, how come she is still doing runway shows?
