'Henry & June' (1990) Uma Thurman as the sensual, emotionally flighty wife of Henry Miller. I just love her costuming and 'look' in the film. The Big earrings, tall thin silhouette, drapey dark fabrics and big made up eyes. Its seedy 1920s/30s Paris at its best. Love this, love this. Very true to period.
'Never on Sunday' (19somethingIforgethaha) Melina Mercouri in little leather fisherman's sandals and stripey tops. I love this too.
Many 1930s films, I just love the late 30s silhouettes. It tall thin and drapey, almost Elvira like dresses. Lots of tassells, East Asian influence, long thin cigarette holders held by manicured nails and pearls down the back.
'Our Betters' (1933) This film is also notable as it was a pre-Hays code movie. Some of the things the characters do and say are surprising for the time. Also, Constance Bennett was gorgeous, a beautiful face. I just like her attitude and character a lot. In one scene she has this long, dark dress, and giant sleeves with tassels hanging off them, very decadent 30s aristocrat which is exactly her character!
I like the 'Lennox Sisters' (199?) from Masterpiece Theater for costuming. Can't forget the wonderful Milena Canonero for period pieces--> Barry Lyndon, Marie Antoinette, The Affair of the Necklace.
And a rogue choice...
'Body of Evidence' starring Madonna. I know, I know, horrible terrible film. But I love Madonna's look in it. Its icy Hitchcock blonde with old school 40s starlet. The Veronica Lake hair, pearls, nails, beige beret. I love it. This is probably the classiest Madonna was visually other than today.
