Isn't inspiration always derivation? You see something that insipres you, and you derive an idea from it.

If you transform it to look radically different from the thing that inspired you, then it´s not a derivation. In this case you can tell where the concept is coming (supposedly) from.

By those standards though, very little could ever be considered not derivative.

I'm quite positive McQueen caught the idea from the CdG 'dress'. He used to do that quite a lot and was a huge fan of Rei.

I don't see a look-alike. It's a use of a classic technique, like drapés, plissés...etc.
 
well it's awkward, but i guess using Schlemmer's Bauhaus logo is not a super-original idea either

Wow! That is the best outfit look-alike so far in my opinion! That's a direct copy of a symbol! You can't hide that!

It's not really a "copy of a symbol", it's simply using the symbol as a print.

And no designer can really claim that jacket, it's a staple piece that has been around since the 50s.
