Ponchos

[Theory]

A lot of the girls at my daughters daycare (yes, daycare) wear ponchos. If that isn't a sign of an overexposed trend, I don't know what is.

nay, My version of that trend is a vintage 70s shawl I have thrown about my shoulders and pinned with a vintage rhinestone pin I love capelets though. I hope it doesn't become the uber trend poncho have

I'm new, first post....hello =)

Anyways, I like handmade and/or really unique ponchos....but not the ones that are replicated in nearly every store and on nearly every girl I see.

Poncho's - why are they still here?

I may be completely mistaken, and I am probably going to have a lot of reply posts telling me that I have no idea what I am talking about...but why is it that the poncho keeps coming back to haunt us?
I think that a lot of women simply just do not pull of that look. Don't get me wrong, a lot of women do, and I have noticed that they are all below a size 10-12 (UK that is) I've seen some really rather large women wearing these huge poncho's and I cannot help thinking that they look like they are wearing a marquee tent. This is not helped when they have to wear a couple of jumpers underneath, thus increasing the bulk.
Please do not interpret my writings as anti-fat as I myself would easily fill a size 14-16 dress size. But I would never be caught dead wearing a poncho.
Maybe these large girls are seeing the poncho as the ultimate garment that hides all the bits you would much rather that no one else saw. But please, has no one said to these girls that they are doing themselves no favours?
In my opinion, poncho's should remain in the Ugg boot category: worn for comfort and warmth and within the safety and sanctity of your own home.
Any thoughts?

personally, I despise ponchos! Yet, I have seen some women that are large (US 18/20) pull them off because of the type and how they wear them- not the kind you have pictured. It honestly depends on the person, but ponchos are over, so most people aren't wearing them!

I think you're right, the poncho has gone mainstream but in many respects is totally over. I've seen a lot of "Chavs" still insisting on wearing them here in sunny London. Most of them are pairing them with Ugg boots strangely enough. But they were around a couple of seasons ago, it seem that persons are determined to pound this one into the ground!
Now the cape trend, will it go the same way as ponchos? Does it still have to adhere to the same poncho rules? I tried on one and I thought that I looked like an over-fed Batman. Carrie (SATC) wore one once and I thought it rocked!

Like Fashion Puss, I'm bewildered as to why so many women are still wearing these things.

It seems like the poncho has become the middle-aged womans new "trendy item" - she wears it in the cheapest acrylic knits, in hot pink and turquoise and with an overly tanned face and overly bleached hair. The beer-belly and large boobage is usually de rigeur, making it possibly the most unflattering item known to mankind.

Of course, all the cheaper shops have been selling mini ponchos so they can do mother & daughter double acts.

My mum reckons loads of people got them for Christmas and are determined to wear them! I have one, but i've worn it all of once and it might come out next summer if i can find a 'less conventional' way to wear it in the cooler evenings... I might get killed for saying that but oh well!

I have no idea why some people believe ponchos are still in. I've rarely seen any woman be able to pull the look off, so I just steered clear of falling into the poncho world. Hah I did end up recieveing one for Christmas, but I only wear it when I'm working on the computer.

I think it can be pulled off. If you have super long legs and are skinny I like the look (in nice fabrics, not turquoise etc as mentioned above) Of course, this isn't a large portion of the population.. and most people don't know what the hell look good on them so they go ahead and wear them anyway. So I think has turned most of us off of something which can be practical and cute, especially if you live in a place that gets chilly where most fashion trends are difficult to translate with the weather.
