Project Catwalk UK

Just finished watching the fifth episode and wow, Matthew's stock really plummeted in the space of two episodes! He was the golden boy in the first three episodes even if his designs for the garden party and frisky challenges were very similar but wham! Now he's someone out of his league and looked upon with some askance by some like Renato. He's also a rather immature 20-yr old to boot if his confessionals are anything to go by ("They're jealous of me and Ana who are so perfect together which is why they separated us!"). If he lasts any longer in this competition, he'd be the unlikely villain of the season.

I'm sad that Gemma went because Matthew's design was boring, looked unfinished and badly sewn, and uninspiring. At least Gemma's design, while not exactly the prettiest thing I've seen, had some quirkiness in it that I liked. Maybe somewhere out there there is a modern-day druidess who would love to get married in some forest glen in Gemma's creation, who knows? I can't think anyone who would want to caught dead in Matthew's creation.

Also, what can Gemma do, exactly? Her model wanted Princess Fiona from Shrek. Did the judges expect Gemma to steamroller the model, gag her up, or ignore her and create something more to her liking? In the first season of US's Project Runway from which this challenge was "borrowed" from, Nora was screwed just like Gemma was when Nora's model wanted a very conventional dress and Nora was booted anyway after doing her best to make the dress as unconventional as possible without getting her model to throw a teary hissyfit on the show.

This is the second episode in a row where I really feel that the weakest link (Matthew!) should have gone but didn't. If Project Catwalk want to "borrow" challenges from the US version in the future, I really hope they borrow some of the better-designed challenges, like the recent "Inspiration" one where the contestants design a dress inspired by a photo they take about town.

I felt it was fair that Gemma went. She was in the bottom two 2 weeks in a row and a record like that shouldn't stand. This was Matthew's first bottom 2 and I believed the judges gave him another change. Even though his design wasn't the best, it was still simple and wearable, whereas Gemma's was not.

But if previous track record is taken into consideration when judging a particular contestant's performance, then should Lesley be eliminated in Ep04 when she had been delivering consistently previously? Should even Sushino be eliminated then in Ep03 when the judges clearly acknowledged that his aesthetics and design sensibilities were screwed by a challenge that was clearly not his "thing"? Hmmm.

Thanks for the pictures. Wow they already had the FW show? The timing is way off. I assumed that they were going to do S/S '07. I don't really like the first two, but the last dress is gorgeous. The patternwork looks very Debi. My picks for F3 are Debi, Chris, and I guess Marianne.

Pics from Episode 5 - this week has been the worse. The challenge was to design a wedding dress for their model, adhering to the model's brief and requirements. The models chose which designer they wanted in the beginning. Christopher and Renato were the last ones to be picked but ironically, it was Christopher who won with his design (this was the ONLY dress that I actually liked). I was frankling SHOCKED at who went - Gemma's dress was not that appalling and if that's the brief that was given by her model, that's what she had to work to. Renato's however was just shockingly hideous.

Christopher (Jessica - AKA...Rachel McAdams lookalike??)

Debi (Gemma - she threw a mini-tantrum about wanting ribbons around the waist but I think it works better without)

Gemma (Lisa) Why did she have to go??????

Kirsty (Sherene)

Marianne (Ana) Yes, it's not a wedding dress but Ana initially wanted royal purple so at least this veered off in a better direction.

Matthew (Kate) Poor guy - he burst into tears after being criticised by Julien. His youth and inexperience really shows but I'm glad he got a second chance.

Renato (Lynsey) I don't even know what to say about this.

that was such a weak week  :p ooh dear that sounds like I tried to make a bad joke but it was completely accidental. and now i've just posted a really fundendant post because I've forgotten what I was going to say.

infact i like gemma's dress, and yes matthew was the weakest in this round, but overall matthew is a better designer...he just got lost in this round...

I liked Gemma's dress too... was rather sad she left cos she has such potential. well Shakeel's finally out, that bit with the curtain was hilarious but bless him he was so earnest about it. Loved Kirsty's & Christopher's dresses.

^ I loved Kirsty's and Christopher's dresses too! Though I don't know why they said Kirsty's photo wasn't very impressive, I liked it much better than Renato's photo!

Here are the pics from episode 6. This challenge is my favourite so far! Guided by Robert Cary Williams (eeek...I love him!), the designers were taken to the Traid warehouse (a more fashion-focused charity/thrift store) to pick out 10 items of clothing to remake into a fashion/visual piece for a photoshoot. Then Robert asked them to switch baskets so that everyone ended up with someone else's basket (much to Kirsty's dismay....). Once finished, they then had to style/direct the photoshoot for their outfits. This time, Renato won his first challenge - I didn't really dislike anybody's outfits because they were all innovative in their own ways. Though I thought some outfits were better than Renato's, his photo came out looking the best.

Christopher (Ana) - I LOVED this outfit

Debi (Gemma) - Gosh...I have to agree with Julien this time...very very dull indeed.

Kirsty (Sherene) - Everyone loved the dress but couldn't understand the green right boob bit. Given that she had the worse choices courtesy of Shakeel, she did a fine job.

Marianne (Jessica) - This is cool yet ugly at the same time - very VERY Swarowski encrusted so there was a bit too much going on. Cool skirt though.

Matthew (Kate) - I LOVED the pleated top - the bottom drapey material bit is slightly dodgy but overall, I think this was a step-up from last week!

Renato (Lynsey) - The kinda-deserved winner. There are elements of the outfit that I love, the interesting hook at the back, the skirt and the red braces. But something doesn't quite gel - maybe there's too many contrasts going on.

Shakeel (Erica) - Someone had to leave and it was Shakeel. It was such a strong week that I think Shakeel's dress was only weakest by elimination. The photo wasn't great, and he did bulls*** a bit about wanting to preserve the past essence of the curtains he used for the skirt...

U.S. look-alikes

In the picture with the designers of "Project Catwalk" the lady in the 2nd row looks like wendy pepper, and the guy with the glasses in the back row, looks like McCarrol... Sorry for wasting your time!

I loved this challenge as well. I thought it was far more interesting than anything on Project Runway. And how brilliant was it to have them trade fabric?

Just curious, for those of you in the UK, has there been any buzz about who actually showed at London Fashion Week? I would imagine that if the show is a success, people would be talking about it!

I just finish watching project runway season 1 last night, I have to say the Project catwalk did a much better job than the American one, the designers are much more talented. A shame that I dont have Sky at home, cant wait to see more pics from you susie! Thank you so much!

Lesley's design - I thought this sounded v. ambitious on paper and v. interesting and like Kelly, I was most intrigued at how this would turn out. Lesley - maybe you can clarify this for me. You know you said you would use bleach to do a trompe d'oeil design on the dress - how comes I can't see it? TBH, I think you should have been there to guide Renato and Matthew (bless the poor boy but he just did NOT know what he was doing!!) coz I think they might have screwed up your design...
I was v. sorry to see you go especially when I loved all your designs in the weeks previously. But I admire you for taking the flack and not blaming your team.

Well Susie, on that plain black velvet, can you see the image of a woman's body? The image is then picked out in the natural contours with crystals and beading which took absolute hours. It looks better in the flesh so to speak, where you can appreciate the work that's gone into it. It also has a little pair of knickers and suspenders to the front, whilst there is a corset painted on the back... and the infamous spotty bum that Matthew gave it.

It was actually a very good dress. The fact that they didn't get the 'humour' of the dress was a pity - because it was made for a youngster, whose attitude is supposed to be legendary.

You can't please all of the people all of the time, although I've had very positive reactions from people on the street, and a lot of people that work in the fashion industry at a high level.... so there you go - there's no accounting for taste - and I still maintain that I 'LIKE' the dress. I would wear it out!

argh so peeved marianne went, i felt she showed real promise on some of the outfits she did, and it was just her bad mistake of effing up the measurements that got her out, if the dress had actually ended up with the original design rather than the little bib she had to slip in, it would of been much better...her model was seriously peeved though huh, so would i though :innocent:

i didnt like how they breeezed over how impractical christophers was, it was all white and they were supposed to be worn cleaning, the colours would run too..

me, i liked renato's the most if he made it thinner and all into one outfit i think it would of been better:lol:.......:flower:

p.s if you didnt know the brief was to design a dress for the cleaners at the savoy, they went behind the scenes and did some research through cleaning themselves, they only had a bufget of £30 and had set material and colours. the winning dress went into production.. they found it hard as they couldnt be so exspressive with their designs...
