they chose to dress the way they want to dress and props to them for being famous for it.

Aw, it's not *that* bad. If I were younger and thinner I'd probably want to look similar to this - don't know if I'd have the nerve to go all out like some of these chicas do.
Quite a few of the pictures I've seen of this style put me in mind of the Japanese street looks we've seen since the 90s (fruits, gothic lolita, etc.). Also, this picture makes me think of 80s girls:

Didn't know there was a name for this, but seems to be a very popular look for students both in York & Lincoln. In Lincoln at present, and since reading this, saw lots of girls wearing similar hair & clothes. As someone who can just about remember the 80's, it reminds me a lot of that era & a girl band called 'Strrawberry Switchblade' if my (aged) memory serves me right

They drive me crazy when I see them on the internet. They just swear that they are the stuff. But they look stupid to me. And the bow with the big hair just drives me mad.

I'm just glad there are none in my area. Then again, I'm stuck with "chongas" and wannabe gangstas around here along with plain old ghetto.

However, I have to admit I kind of secretly like the crazy hair colors, just not the way they r*pe...err "wear" them.

I find it funny how they idolize Japan like it's not a normal country. I wonder if they realize that the crazy Japanese street fashion is the exception and not the rule. Plus, a lot of those people go home and change.

However, as a redeeming quality of scene kids, it's hilarious to read the tongue-in-cheek definitions of them.

Without trying to over generalise I think those following this trend are quite young (13-17). I saw too girls on the tube the other day who looked about 10 years old who were total slaves to this trend. And because they are so young I suppose you have to admire that they are experimenting with clothes and how they look. Most people their age in Britain are wearing tracksuit bottoms, Bench jumpers and loads of gold jewellery. I reckon a lot of these guys and girls once they grow older and get their own mind will be quite well dressed and develop their own style. I think it bodes well that at such a young age they are prepared to experiment with their image, their hair, their make-up and their clothes despite enormous pressure through school and media to look normal and fit in.

I actually agree. OK, so a lot is copied, but at least it is a genuine start for originality & that these people are experimenting & will develop their own style. Anything is better than tracksuits, trainers, baseball caps & sovereign jewellery - WHY did that become the British 'uniform'?

^ I see that ALL OVER MYSPACE, very popular amongst the scene kids and emos (on that note: is 'scene kid' the same as what we're talking about here? Scene Queen?). Annoys the hell out of me. And the adjective is generally macabre. Like, Michelle Massacre or something.
