So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

You can tell you haven't been around long. We came because at the time Ali was modeling. Then something marvelous happened. We loved the place. The members, all the information we could find here and most of all the fact that many of the members we can now call our friends... and I'm so active because I really really love it here.

I will be the first to admit that I help push Ali into modeling because I thought it was a way for her to have her dream. I made a mistake. She lost part of her childhood because of it. Is that what you wanted to hear?
The wonderful part of all this is that she could change her mind and she did.

I would like to add that a close girlfriend of mine went to paris last year for her first runways... she was a beautiful natural blonde and her agency died her hair orange because it fitted in with the collection... i didnt recognise her the first time i saw her in vogue... she had a great figure... and the agency in paris told her that she had so much wrong with her body and that she has to have even less body fat... i guess all i can say is dont let an agency change who you are... everyone is different... and thats the beauty of it... just dont let anyone put you down... there are alot of sharks in this industry

:flower: but if you have potential i say go for it... you only live once so you may as well do things your way  xox

I have a question, if Ali is no longer persuing modelling (not seriously) then why are you, model mom, and sloan still actively monitering this site, when your daughter is not even doing it anymore? Doesn't it make her feel like this is what you really wanted for her? And why would you devote so much time to this when she doesn't do it? I mean, I do understand, bc a lot of people here are not in the business, but youre really really active... just a question out of curiosity... :)

I'm sorry to say but your logic seems a bit distorted. We all came here for different reasons but what makes us stay is usually the same thing. So it doesn't matter if Ali isn't in the business anymore, especially because model_mom and Sloan haven't taken any advantage of the situation by being here. In fact, it was our profit because we got to know two fantastic people and an amazing model. The fact that Ali isn't so active doesn't wipe out all the work she's done, and it certainly doesn't affect MM and Sloan's participation in the forums.

^ i dont think model_moms daughter has anything to do with why she is here 'ny1'

She has so much wisdom in the world of fashion and is like family to this forum... please don't ask anyone why they are here ny1 because it is a place for everyone and i dont think you should single members out and question why they are here... i am here because fashion is my life... and im sure its yours too :flower:

i dont know if this question applies to this thread... if anyone here knows of a magazine called FHM i would value your thoughts on what you think of the girls in that magazine... my sister and i are considering it but don't want to get a bad reputation from being in it...

really is it dirty? will it damage my reputation? I have never read it... or is it better to stick to clean cut inside sport?

great thread model mom.......it's good to know these things.....you always see "agents" walking around the mall, handing out cards to any girl that takes them...so it's good to know info on stuff like this...karma for you

Big one for all of you....Make sure it's what you want. Looks are only 50% of it. If you don't have the personality or the drive Its not going to work. Ali could have made it big but she just didn't want it. She hated being away from home and refused to go back when they needed her. She was suppose to go to Japan for 6 weeks the end of May. She called 2 weeks before she was suppose to go and told them she wasn't going. Ford Models took her off their website in NY. She is still on the Ford site in Chicago and is doing jobs from there...and you know what? She's happy...sometimes when you get what you want, you find out it's not what you wanted after all.

ModelMom, I would be careful on this one. I thought I 'hated' modelling when I quit at 17. Only now that I am older and wiser I realise what an opportunity I had considering how lucky I was to have Women willing to sign me in NY.
Now I am 20, it is most likely that noone will sign me without some serious effort. Be careful, even if it what she thinks she wants now - she might kick herself and hate the decision she made later...don't want her to be going through what I went though.

P.s. make this a stick - I get tons of emails asking me questions about modelling!

How tall do you have to be to be a model? (in cm, please :flower: )

Model_mom, this is a really good thread. I actually have a couple questions. First being, is there a set height for magazine or catalogue modeling, like there is in runway? And do you have to be as skinny as for runway? And can someone make like a list of what you will have to spend your money on. Like, photoshoots, travelling, etc. I really want to know about this. Thanx guys, great thread! :)

For ruway the minimum height requirement is 175.9 cm or 5'9"
For print as fas a s I know you can be as short as 168 cm or 5'6"

Lucia-, youre probably better off PMing Model_Mom and asking her, she would know for sure and give you some other tips!

They are willing to deviate from those min. heights though. Think: Mona, Polina, Jeisa, Marina, Sara Ziff, Anouck, Anne Marie, Bianca Balti, Ciara Nugent, Luca, Diana Dondoe, Valentina, Liliane, Karen Elson, Isabeli, Shannan, the list goes on :p They are all under 5'9". Although some of them are sometimes listed as 5'10".

Good thread! It's good to hear the opinions from people who have actually experienced the whole course.

What!!!! They're all so short? Anouck Lepere? From videos she seems taller compared next to other girls. I thought she was at least 5'9.5". How do you know this, Perlefine?

Anouck is 5'6" they say. I don't know how I know all that, I thought it was common knowledge, among the 'model insiders' that is :ninja: I enjoy the height mysteries, or used to enjoy.

Yep Anouck is really short compared to the other models, with everything there is never a set minimum if your face is good enough. Even Devon Aoki who is listed at 5"6..but probaly about 5"4 did couture shows when she was big.
