So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

If you can't take the time to read through this thread, then I find it hard to believe that you're really serious about your modeling aspirations. Everyone wants an easy answer....well here's one for you. The chances of most girls even getting there foot in the door of a major ny modeling agency are slim. Keeping it there if you do get in is even slimmer. Modeling in this day and age is a revolving door....a new batch of girls show up every season. If you're not singled out by a major client or photographer after one or two seasons then it's out the door and a new batch of girls are in. There are girls that make it but they are very few and far between. It's all a gamble.

Take the time to read this thread....weed out what's not important and all the chit chat. There is some valuable information here provided by people who know what it takes to make it in the fashion business. Use it and you will be one step ahead of the game.

Someone told me today that I should be a mouth model (like for lip stick, toothpaste, etc). Everyone always compliments me on my smile.

I was wondering if there is any demand for this type of modeling, and where I would find out more about it? Are there agencies that represent this kind of modeling in NYC? Thanks! :flower:

Agencies like to have girls that do everything. Runway, beauty, print, advertising and Parts are usually done by the same girls.

I'm sure you've heard about girls that are gorgeous in every way but too short (under 5'8") - you are right about agencies wanting to have girls that do everything. Why you ask - because they can. Do you think they fill their board with girls that are very very specific to only a certain trait? I believe they can have their pick of many many girls and they sign on the ones who can offer the "whole package" to clients. Just my opinion - take it or leave it.

^ I understand that it's easier to hire people that have the whole package. But there still must be a need for Parts modeling if there are whole agencies devoted to it? Maybe a Parts model can't do Covergirl or Chanel lipstick ads, but perhaps she could do teeth whitening or toothpaste or something?

I figure it's at least worth a shot, right? Or am I just being unrealistic to think that my mouth alone could get work?

^I think it is indeed a bit unrealistic, yes..but I mean you have nothing to lose..so give it a try :flower:

Go for it! Good luck..xx. I haven't done anything yet since I am in my last year of uni and finishing soon. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen...

I would never discourage anyone .... you should give it a shot and see where it goes. That's what everyone does who gets into modeling. You honestly never know where it might go! GOOD LUCK!

My moto in life is "You never know until you try"

One day I stepped by a model casting, and guessed what? The Casting dricetors loved my looks and I'm now represented by two major agencies in Sweden and have managed som make som money off modeling. That is why I encourage anybody who wants to become a model to give it a shot.

i have a question and i'm really sorry if it was already asked but i couldn't find it on this site ...
i'm invited to an good agency and they said to me i shall bring my photos with me... but it aren't professional photos. so what should be the size of the pictures ? i really don't have an idea.

If you aren't a model yet, they don't expect you to have pro pictures. But they want to see if you are photogenic and if they are interested, they will have something to refer to to put in file.

The size of non-pro photos doesn't matter. What they want to see is you. They like a couple good full length shots showing your body ... wearing jeans and a tank is usually sufficient or a bathing suit ... plus a nice head shot or two, hair off your face, minimal makeup. The photos should not have anyone else in them and they should have a plain background ... like a plain wall or something.

If you don't have any decent photos, most agencie will take polaroids of you, if they are interested in you ... right there in the office. So I would not worry about it too much.

Tristan might have more insight, so Trsitan, if you see this what's your opinion?

The first page of this thread tells you the major agencies in NY and how to get in contact with them. You need to contact these agencies if you're really that serious. If they're interested, you'll figure out everything as you move along in your career. I didn't have anyone to ask when I started and now I'm more than happy to help people but I (or anyone else) can't make decisions for them.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this thread is already full of FAQ but pretty much useless unless you're really going to go for it. And your questions will ultimately answer themselves. The modeling business isn't THAT complicated/confusing.

Speaking from a parent's point of view I have to agree - there are NO easy answers. From what we've seen every model has a different story as to how they got to the point where they are now. There are lots of choices and decisions to make at a young age and they can open a new world of opportunity that is exciting, rewarding, disappointing and unbelievable. There is a tremendous amount of luck involved but if you have the "look" they want it will shine through. Everyone's career evolves differently and I would read read read everything you can get your hands on, magazines, on-line blogs, fashion sites ( TFS especially ). Listen to your heart and be passionate about fashion.

I've still got a good few weeks, ...well a month actually...well, im thinking of going back to icm as they said but im thinking to try select too...which is best for mens? (not that im positive of either saying yes)

I'd go and get a feel for which agency likes you best. Though it seems ICM has a smaller successful board with lots of models from DNA/IMG/Wilhelmina vs Selects 264 models. Maybe take that into consideration as well?

Hopefully someone with first hand experience of London agencies can better help you :ninja:

i figured posting the following market profiles might help some people out..so here goes .........
