So You Want to Become a Model? (PLEASE READ POST #1 BEFORE POSTING)

^High fashion? outfits from high fashion labels? that's what I understand from it. Outfits that show Personality? I don't understand, I believe they want that your neice transmitt personality in the photos, that's what I understand. Could you please tell me which agency is?
Why they care about the clothes? a girl should take photos wearing something like a shirt and a pair of jeans that suits her & that's it ... body, hair & face that's what matters, not if she's wearing a Versace dress or a Zara dress.

^She's with John Casablanca. I personally think they are a scam. I've never heard of an agency wanting the model to dress themselves for a test shoot but she wants to do it anyway. I assume they mean something that looks high fashion but that could be several things and personality is your own personal style? That's why I'm asking. It really doesn't make sense to me.

^Showing personality in the photos is through your facial expressions, it's difficult to explain but if you are a very happy person, you will be able to easily transmitt it in a photo & I will see that you're actually a happy person since I can see you aren't faking & that what you're transmitting is real, like for example Natalia Vodianova, if you ever seen photos of her smiling you could see the happiness she's transmitting is real & you really feel that.

Maybe the personality they are reffering is how creative you can be in terms of dressing up? showing her fashion sense I'd say.

I think you should get informed about that agency first, before putting all that effort of wearing outfits that are high fashion, personality & elegant. Because it really doesn't make sense for me all those ridiculous things that they are requesting & which we both don't get ... they could have explain them at least.

I speak from my own experiences, but I would have to say that John Casablanca is a scam these days.

You are correct that they are not a real agency.

It's not a scam, exactly ... but it's not real modeling either. It's more or less a "charm school" where girls can learn to walk and talk and be more feminine. It's a waste of money for any girl who has serious potential as a model. The money needs to be spent on building a real portfolio after they are signed by an agency.

It doesn't matter what she wears, actually ... since it won't be used by an agency anyway. It won't matter too much ... just have her wear things that make her look good, but still like herself. Dont get too contrived and don't accessorize much ... it distracts from her ... not good in a portfolio.

All of these are misnomers ... they don't really mean anything. High fashion (a total misnomer ... high fashion /haute couture means one of a kind such as a designer like Galliano would put in his runway show) probably means "editorial" ... which usually, but not always, means edgy and looking like it might be designed for a high end fashion show or something. That could be something very simple like a dress with a newer profile and killer heels or slim pants and a halter ... or could mean a fancy ball gown. . Elegant can mean anything, too ... even a classy suit ... but most likly they mean very dressy, like a gown or cocktail attire. And "personality" probably means something that shows off her own personality ... maybe a "girl next door" look ... which can be jeans and a big smile or a summery dress or black leather over skin ... depending on her personality. See what I mean? None of this is really a description of what to wear.

A test shoot ... the very first one ... is usually styled by the model and the photographer .... but as she gains some experience, the agency might send her out to shoot with a better photographer, that has a stylist on his team. She would start with basics and the agent would direct her what sort of thing to bring to the shoot. Probably they would instruct her to wear something simple, easy and that show's off her body like jeans and a white tank, maybe a dress or skirt so show off her legs and then a few other things that are neither "elegant" nor "high fashion" ... but suited to the look that the agent thought was marketable to their clients. And that could be anything ... but it's unlikely they would start with anything complicated for a new face.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I thought it best to ask the person she is working with too BetteT. I feel the same about a lot of stuff you said but my neice says it's just something she wants to try temporarily until she goes to college.

If she enjoys it ... then it's probably worth the money. Just as long as she doesn't expect it to prepare her for a career in modeling ... because it won't.

^ I absolutely agree, the successful models of these days never needed to go "charm" schools.

Don't some designers - not necessarily the big designers, hold open castings, especially for fashion week, and if so, can't unsigned models or signed models who are not in the "chosen" group pursue work that way? I know the odds are not great, but it happens right? Do the designers advertise in certain publications or online?

Is 15 too young for a male to start modeling? I've been told at least 6 times by different people this year that I could be a model, and so I was thinking maybe one day I'll send pictures to an agency and just see what happens. But I'm still going through puberty so I was thinking maybe I should wait a few years. ****Edited *** I don't know anything about male models I only know about female models, lol...

Please read post #1 ... you may not ask discuss your weight (and in the case of boys/men, your build) nor ask for information about is your body or face is suitable for modeling. I have edited out part of your post.

But ... there is room for younger male models and some need for them for certain clients ... the youth market. Only an agency can tell you if you have the right look and build to book jobs ... so it never hurts to submit some pictures. You will need your parent's support, so make sure they will come with you if an agency want's to see you and that they will approve of you doing this type of work and will allow time off from school for it, etc..

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but, I was wondering if somebody could give me some tips when taking face forward beauty shots?

London (UK) based agencies

I'm taking a trip to London in the next couple of weeks and while I'm there I want to try out at a few agencies to see if I have what it takes. Can someone care enough to point me in the right direction? I understand how hard it is to get into the industry but I think I have heard enough opinions about my 'desired' assets to know I should give it a try and see where it gets me.

I am assuming that you mean Modeling Agencies ... so I merged your thread here, since this is where we discuss all things about becoming a model. If it's some other type of agency (photographer, stylist, makeup artist, designer, etc.) let me know and I'll direct you to the threads where you can find information about those professions and agencies.

There may already be some posts that answer your question in this thread. To find out, you can search this thread via the "search this thread" link on the nav bar at the top of these posts. I'd suggest using kewords: agency agencies London and see what you can find.

You have here a list of agencies in London, the addresses are on their sites:

Thanks for moving my post into somewhere I can get the most benefit. I'll search the thread now ^_^

Also, thank you to the user who posted those links. I'll read through them now.

Its possible to stumble by accident into the industry. I know Lagerfeld had to put one of his assistants in one of his Chanel show a few years back because a model called in sick and afterwards she was asked by modeling agencies to try it out but she refused.
Its also possible to shoot with a photographer who is doing a try out editorial for a magazine. Example would be Zink, a lot of their eds come from people submitting work. And agencies may contact you or the photographer if they see you are unsigned and like what they see.

There are more than just a few ways to get into the industry. :flower:

My friend sent some photos in to IMG via email she really looks like a model ( she looks tall in photographs) but she is oly 5'5!!! She is 19 so has no hope of getting taller.

I was wondering if a girl that short - even with an extraordinary face ( she looks like a cross between gemma ward and natalia v !) could ever actually have a sucessful HF career?

Also has anyone ever heard of a model who was actualled signed after emailing IMG - or any other agency for that matter?
Thanks

^ Sorry to say but there's no agency that signs models with the height of 5'5" = 165 cm, at least I don't know of any, honestly ... I've seen models with 170 and 171 on agencies' websites but is really rare ... most agencies don't want models shorter than 172 & I don't even think IMG has girls shorter than 174.

Well you never really know what the girls' real heights are from websites, most are bumped up, but anyway, Shanay Hall at IMG Worldwide is only listed as 5'6''.5/169cm and Zippora Seven at Elite NY I think is only around 5'6'' as well. Although they don't do international runway, and aren't purely high fashion, they've been working steady for a few years now. So although it's rare, it's not completely impossible.

Select and Storm sometimes have some shorter girls up in their development sections, but they're usually very young (i.e time to grow).
