The Blonde Hair Thread

Isa, love the photo of you flipping your hair

seanutbutter, i wish i could speed up the growing process!

The Ida, i know right? its horrible that people say these things but i dont care enough to let that sh*t stop me! lol

Evy, thats funny that you didnt realize till now! & those photos you posted are so pretty!

fashionjunkiexx, i think you mean ash = grey tones?

Hanne, DKS : DookieKakaShiet sorry for all the word vomit, that why i abbreviated it!

this was when i had medium brown dye over blonde highlights. one day when i go back to brown, it'll interesting to see how a semi-permanent will fade back to blonde. i love the creamyness of the blonde highlights showing through the brown!

Jan 31st, one of my favorite pictures of my hair...except that you can see the brown at the bottom that im still planning to get rid of before i consider myself 'done'

problem solved! i just hide behind my sister's boyfriend! ta-da! hahaha

the middle of my forehead grows the fastest so i ask my hairdresser to start there first! this will give it the maximum about of time to get all the root dye to develop. i already told my buddie Melfreya about this but my HD does a darker root color and then the light ash blonde highlights. my HD says i wont have a 'blonde root touchup' until im fully blonde.

February 8th lovely ash in natural light. a week makes a big difference, you can see my roots coming in the middle of my forehead!

in the ski lounge after snowboarding...the mountain beat the sh*t out of my face & hair lol its all flat here, you can see the layered ends that i dislike so much and the lil blocks highlights at the roots. hopefully those will be eradicted in my next salon visit!

oh man I adore the february 8th pic..nothing beats beautiful blonde hair in natural sunlight!
soooo beautiful and lush:crush:
I've said it again but kissablekae you are an inspiration ^_^ you look so good as a blonde!! definitely keep it up!! the only thing I could do if I had your hair is to trim the ends a little in the snowboarding trip so it looks healthier..:flower:
I'm definitely gonna follow the darker root color and then the light ash blonde highlights on top advice, once my roots start showing a bit :flower:

^ thank you Melfreya!

my ends look so yuckie in that snowboarding photo but i swear it doesnt normally look that bad! after a day of snowboarding i looked totally worn! literally every part of my body touched the snow *tippy tumbled down the bunny* at one point when i was trying to stop, my board threw all the snow in my face & hair and my lips turned blue!
but you DO see what i mean about how ends dont look as healthy when they have been layered so much. i miss this fullness! & it was easier to curl because i actually had hair to curl versus some sad little crinkles :

I watched VIcky Cristina Barcelona last night.. and He's just not that into you recently, and Scarletts hair is so perfect in those movies!

makes me yearn for the days my hair was this colour..

I did it myself for awhile, had it touched up a few times by the salon.. but i wouldn't recommend doing it yourself! It's very damaging. But if you go to a salon and ask for it, they'll try an talk you out of it, so you have to put your foot down! Thats part of the reason why I ended up doing it myself.

yeahhh thats why i want to do it myself !

i have asked for this twice now and on one occasion she just did what she wanted charged me £95 and the colour didnt change and then second time she made it ginger..

i recently dyed my hair with a d-i-y colourant and it took all the brassyness out of it
so i think im going to keept using it and get my hair into the best condition it can be in between times

yeah they don't like doing it which i don't get, i mean you're paying them to do what you want but...

anyway its also a TON of maintenance. i have naturally dark blonde hair and my roots would come in so fast (even though the length never seemed to budge haha) and they would look pretty much BLACK against the white. now i'm a dark golden blonde and i haven't dyed my hair since november and it doesnt even show! but i'm aching for the platinum again.

^ thats weird. ive seen lots of platinum blondes but i never asked whether they do it themselves or they go to salons...someone out there must be doing it! you probably have to really keep at it until they give in! lol

i think its probably because they want to make sure you dont regret it. once its been bleached to that point you cant go back and maintanence & money is an issue as well. during my consultation they made sure to ask me whether id be okay with having to be in the salon so often and able to take care of my hair etc.

to be honest, im scared of having that high maintanence(more so than mine) of hair. i get sad when i see my roots coming in like right now. i might go saturday or monday...i cant wait to go in but im trying to get my money's worth! so i might wait through the 5th week since its only been 4. but ill see how much its bothering me tomorrow to decide.

i got two compliments from two guys i havent seen in a while, they are 'loving' the blonde. their words not mine :D

Oh yeah, or if you go in with your hair already fairly light they will do it!

And yeah, putting colour over the platinum blonde was a b*tch! And to think now I just want to bleach it out again haha.

But alas, I will resign myself to going lighter through highlights! It looks fabulous on everyone else I see, so why not me?!

I had to do it myself too because my hair stylist didn't just try to talk me out of it, she refused to do it, at all.

i think im going to re-dye my hair this week, the tops the right colour but its like dirty blonde underneath so i want to get that lighter
i might do the underneath first leave it for 15 mins then do the rest

also does anyone know of a good treatment i can buy to keep my hair in alright condition?

yeah if the person asking was naturally light blonde im sure they wouldnt say no because it would probably be so much easier on both the HD and the clients hair.

what happened when you tried to color over the platinum?

i think im going to get my touchups and highlights on Monday. hopefully my hairdresser is in this Monday and not booked. if so then Tuesday after my classes. i sure need a pick me up! i always go back around 4-5 weeks anyways. one my guy friends who is in hair school was like your roots are not even that bad. he said most girls he sees wait until its like 2,3+ months. im like oh hale no im not one of those girls. sure i can wear a hat to school and when i go out but i cant wear hats to work! im gonna feel so *ugly* at work. constantly flipin my hair so roots dont show.

Ohhh when I tried to colour over the platinum is a funny story...

I went to get it done professionally obviously, I knew its hard to cover over platinum and I wouldn't try myself. So I brought a picture of Lauren Conrad/Mischa Barton circa the OC and was trying to explain I just wanted a dark natural blonde colour that I wouldn't have to maintain nearly as much.

Well, my stylist was someone I had never been to before, and she ended up being a huge b*tch! She coloured it, however I don't know what she did wrong, maybe she didn't put on a filler, maybe she didn't know how to work with platinum hair but she was the one recommended to me when I asked the salon.. but anyway.. it ended up REALLY hot at the roots, like very orangey, and the rest was this awful ashy greyish muddy kinda brown colour? It's so hard to describe because it was simply SO awful. I started crying as soon as I got home haha.

And then when I went back and tried to get her to fix it, she started telling me that there was nothing she could do, that my hair was too processed and the only thing she could do was add blonde highlights. Obviously I just left.

I ended up dying it with a box dye just to get rid of the ugliness, and it wasn't so bad for awhile. Then a few months later I went to a different stylist my friend had gone blonde with, and he redid it. It was a little too dark at first for my liking, but now it faded really nicely to a dark golden highlighted blonde.

Best part ? My roots blend so well! So I haven't done it since November and my hair feels much healthier and has grown significantly in comparison to when it was plat.

Such a long post!!

But, I'm itching to go lighter again. I wish I could go to the salon every 4-5 weeks! But no way my student budget can afford it, lol

I had a similar experience when I reverted to my natural light brown/dark blonde. To be fair though, the stylist warned me that coloring over platinum hair is a minefield. She said my hair might come out too red, too dark, or even break off. Bleach damages hair so much that it's not fully predictable how the chemicals will react with your hair. This unpredictability is also why some stylists refuse to take dark hair light blonde.

I held my breath, and luckily the color turned out fine. But still, my stylist warned me that after washing it, my hair would have a greenish tinge for a week or so, and she was right. I appreciate her honesty so much, and it's important to understand that hair colorists aren't miracle workers, particularly if you're after an extreme change.

^ teenagexvanity, omg that HD is such a b*tch! seriously how can people mess up your hair and just expect for you to deal with it. its not your fault! i would have cried at the salon till they offered to fix it eventually! it sucks that there arent laws that hold salons more accountable, its like they have licenses but they still dont know what they are doing. yet they have no problem going ahead and taking huge risks then its so easy for them to say 'o well bye!'.

im sure your natural golden blonde is beautiful on you! getting full highlights is probably the easiest and least harmful way to go lighter...instead of doing the whole head and risking damage *eep*.

either way since i have dark hair i have to go back to the salon every 4-5 weeks. because i cant stand any more rootage(made up word? lol) than that, i could never go 8 weeks... when im satisfised with the amount of blonde i have i'll stop doing the highlights and just the monthly root touchups which will be much easier on my pocket!

GasolineRainbow, oo that reminds me of how more hairdressers need to ask about your hair history before starting any kind of coloring/bleaching on your hair. just because it looks like your natural color doesnt mean it is, they could be working over tons of dyes! but some of them do forget to ask and it irks me. im like WAIT just so you know what your dealing with i dont want orange roots(where hair is natural) and brown hair on the bottom!

although it sucks to be turned away from a hairdresser, its what they should do if they know they think they will mess up your hair. its great when they are completely honest with you, so you know what you will have to live with when you leave the salon.

i talk to all of the hairdressers that ive had like i'll just say lil things like 'oo this girl had orange hair that was supposed to be blonde' stuff like that meant im not gonna be okay with sh*t from them if my hair turns out orangey. they always reply 'oo they didnt do it right, dont worry yours will be blonde not orange' etc little things like that keeps up the quality control from the HD i think and reminds them of what they need to do to get the results i want. because like we've been complaining in this thread about how you tell a HD you want half inch trim and 15 mins later all your hair is on the floor! somewhere in there they forgot what you asked for! shoot! im taking all precautions to protect my hair!

i think my new salon uses better bleaching products. the hairdressers definitely seem to have more experience and confidence in what they do. contrasting my current salon to the old one made me realize this, before that i hadnt done much bleaching so i wasnt sure what was expected.

tbh i would really appreciate if hair dressers just turned you away instead of just doing what they wanted and charging a stupid amount!
one time i went to a high end hair dresser (toni & guy) and asked to have slices of blonde put in it, i showed her a picture of exactly what i wanted, instead of that she just gave me very thin highlights and charged me like £100 i ended up going back but she just did the same thing again and put a colour over it and the highlights went green.

i ended up going to the cheaper salon round the corner who gave me exactly what i wanted and charged me £8
i would jus so much prefer if they were honest with you.
