The Business of Magazines

@voguesg on Instagram (a fan account) has tagged 3 individuals on a Vogue Singapore logo

a. @pakkee - whose bio states he’s Fashion Features Editor of VSg;
b. Vanessa Caitlin - whose bio states she’s Digital Creative Produce for VSg; and
c. Sharon Lim

Sharon Lim’s bio states nothing about Vogue Singapore, however she was the FORMER EIC of Elle Singapore. Maybe she got the job or will somehow work for VSg. I mean she has to right. What are the odds of that fan account tagging these individuals, 2 of which ending up working for Vogue.

With all these appointments taking place, Vogue Singapore is really on its way.

Wow at that Alt interview!! Hahah she is doing what Shulman used to do, straight out lies, thinking not that many readers would see through them, well not us here at TFS!!

Shameful!

Vogue Singapore is way overdue and makes way more sense than the last two Eastern European launches! The rest of the country's magazines already produce stunning content, across the board. And the key blue chip brands advertise on the regular and take loads of advertorials out in those magazines. Also, they will naturally publish in English. I'm ready for them to show the rest of Asia how it's done, China included!

Vogue Singapore update:

One of the Vogue Singapore staffers posted an Instagram Story announcing the launch of the magazine. She tagged the von Schlippes (publishers), and Norman Tan (Editor-in-Chief of Esquire Singapore).

It could mean anything as Norman is also a Digital Editor of other magazines. However, Condé Nast International has shifted to the trend of appointing male editors so I won’t completely rule him out.

All this nancy drewing

LOL, trust an American to investigate and expose a story before the CN got to do it themselves. The FBI would be proud of you, Mon.

Of course, if anyone would press CN on their newfound obsession with male editors they'd say that gender doesn't matter and make you out to be the square. That is even with the fact that you'd be hard press to cite a female editor running a men's magazine.
Imo there are two types of Vogue editions. The ones where the magazine speaks almost entirely via fashion editorials only (VP, VI etc) which can be run by a man because the magazine will function on creativity and creativity should not be defined by gender. And then there's the rest where it's essentially a women's magazine with heavy fashion content (British, American, etc) where I feel it should be a woman in charge because the way they would approach issues would be different. A great example is Edwina McCann. Her magazine takes on a variety of issues relating to women, and also empower and educate them. You only need to flip through other Australian editions to see how good her magazine is (occasional budget constraints aside), it's literally like chalk and cheese.
Men editing women's magazines often have blind spots. Like Edward pushing older women to a supplement for an Age issue. That was a very bad idea with some really sensitive undertones, and a female EIC would never have done that.

Anyway, if it is indeed Norman Tan, yeah, not sure. He is doing great work at Esquire Singapore, which is a full-fledged men's magazine. Under him, the magazine consistently surpasses the British and American editions by courting exclusives with many top Hollywood stars. So for starters, he's well connected. But not sure about the rest....

Seems like he is the one groomed for the job

So some chatter in Heart & Soul sent me to dig this up (thanks, MMA!), but.....when did Karlie shoot a Vogue Paris cover? Maybe Martha was as boozed up as Karlie and either mistook Karlie for Virginie Efira or Vogue Spain for Vogue Paris, OR she's just being her shady self by referencing an unrelated cover thereby moving away from the Karlie's '40 VOGUE COVERS' convo. I mean, Karlie may act as if she doesn't count her Vogue covers, but as a model she knows she doesn't have a VP one.

I would definitely give Martha the benefit of the doubt. As for the VP cover, maybe the Victorian Ghost Child can negotiate for her.

Hearst struggling to find new editor for Harper’s Bazaar
Keith J. Kelly

Hearst looks like it is having some trouble filling Glenda Bailey’s old role at Harper’s Bazaar and is now scrambling to name a replacement editor-in-chief before Fashion Week begins in March.

“It’s odd that we haven’t heard anything from them with the fashion shows just around the corner,” said a source at a rival publisher.

Laura Brown, the editor-in-chief of InStyle, is the newest name on the wish list, sources tell Media Ink. She has been approached but so far has given Hearst Magazines president Troy Young and chief content officer Kate Lewis the brush-off.

One source with knowledge of the search said that Brown, an executive editor at Harper’s Bazaar before she was lured to replace Ariel Foxman at InStyle, has not been crossed off the list entirely but is now regarded as “a long shot.”

Two other potential candidates, WSJ Magazine editor Kristina O’Neill and Stella Bugbee, editor-in-chief of New York Magazine fashion site The Cut, have both been in to see the Hearst executives but are not interested. Joyann King, the inside candidate who is running Bazaar’s website, is also still in the running, even as Hearst looks outside.

The job opened up when Bailey said she was going to step down after 19 years and be a consultant to the worldwide HB brand. She was seen as a highly creative print designer with a long list of advertising contacts. On the other hand, she did not have any of the digital expertise that is vital in the current media mix — and was also said to be tough to work for. That might have hastened Hearst to make the retirement decision without a clear replacement in mind.

“She was an absolute nightmare to work for,” said one ex-staffer. “‘The Devil Wears Prada’ writ large.”

An insider at Hearst now says a replacement is expected “in the next month or so.”

Hearst, proving yet again that all the money in the world does not give you class and prestige. It's what they deserve for enabling Glenda for so long, lol! The article actually highlight something which I've overlooked - Heart must've wanted her gone really bad if they didn't even have a shortlist of editors. But the ultimate shame? Nobody is clamoring for the job as they did when Alexandra left British Vogue. They mustve offered it to Carine too, lol.

Just move Kate Lanphear from MC and save yourself the embarrassment of having a job spec out with no applicants, lol.

So was Glenda fired or did she really leave?

The fact that no one is interested is laughable. Glenda has destroyed the magazine to a point where no one wants to be associated with it.

But in all honesty, I’m shocked why no one wants the job. Its the EIC of Harper’s Bazaar US! PLUS, you get to do whatever you want without the fear of being fired... Glenda Bailey’s 19 year reign is the living testament to that

PLUS, you get to do whatever you want without the fear of being fired...t

Ah, but see, they've already burned their fingers with Glenda so her replacement will be paid less, closely monitored, and their freedom curbed. Standard practice across all industries really.

If nobody is buying what you're selling then your product is inferior. In this case, at least. Glenda cheapened the prestige of the magazine when she continually over the years blabbered about cover stars ditching her in favour of Vogue. Kim Kardashian immediately comes to mind.

Kate got such a raw deal when she worked for that gross and vulgar man at Maxim. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her actual redesign, it was just misplaced. But more importantly, it showed that she had the chops, the point of view, and the advertising pull. Bazaar under her could be as directional as the UK edition was under Justine.

Come to think of it, both the UK and US editions still have no replacement.

and what a great idea Benn! Kate for Bazaar would be amazing. She made Maxim bearable.

How much Glenda got as EIC? USD$120K per year? wondering....

I think anyone can make HB better at this point....

Half the current trouble is that the suits and editors have never truly allowed anyone else to flourish at a magazine, which ultimately puts the magazine at risk when themselves decide to exit the office. There’s hardly any comparable talent to grab the torch!

Justine Picardie came out of nowhere to edit British Harper’s Bazaar, and turned the magazine upside down with immediate success. Here’s to hoping whomever Hearst replaces Glenda Bailey with, will be able to follow suit!

120k ? I don't think so at all. Emmanuelle is paid 260k a year and in France we are not known to have outrageous salaries. Glenda had much more for sure.
