i-D Magazine Appoints Thom Bettridge Editor in Chief​

The iconic British title owned by Karlie Kloss is set to resume print on a bi-annual cadence under Bettridge, formerly creative vice president of Ssense.

i-D magazine is set to resume publication with Thom Bettridge as editor-in-chief and chief brand officer, publisher Bedford Media said in a statement.
The magazine will return to print on a bi-annual basis in March 2025 after suspending publication earlier this year. A reduced frequency (the magazine was previously bi-monthly) is intended “to make room for additional print concepts and multi-platform projects,” Bedford said.
Bettridge, who was most recently online retailer Ssense’s vice president of creative content, previously held editorial roles at 032c, Interview and Highsnobiety, where he was editor-in-chief. Bettridge will “oversee all aspects of creative, editorial, and brand for i-D.”
Bettridge’s appointment follows similar moves at other titles to elevate editors with experience blending commerce and media. In August, another alum of the publisher, e-tailer and consultancy Highsnobiety, Willa Bennett, was named editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan and Seventeen.


“No one embodies the future of i-D more than Thom,” Kloss said in a statement, “His creative instinct and cultural fluency make him the ideal person to chart the magazine’s next chapter.”
Bettridge succeeds Alastair McKimm, who exited the company in February following model-investor Kloss’ deal to acquire the British magazine through her company Bedford Media.
Eight staff members in i-D’s editorial and social media were laid off, and the publication went quiet for six months.
A couple of weeks ago, i-D’s website relaunched with a digital cover featuring Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, shot by fashion designer Eli Russell Linnetz.
Bedford is also working on the relaunch of Life magazine.

After five years, Vogue Man is back in the Netherlands. That was a bit like that last year, as a special in the October issue. But now like a self-standing magazine with its own cover, a dedicated team and new energy. Energy that was taken from Paris. “After years of wandering around the fashion weeks for women, I have also been a regular visitor to the men's shows for a while”, says Vogue editor-in-chief Linda Gümüs Gerritsen in her editorial. “Paris then sparkles and buzzes even more than usual. A creative bubble, with a presentation or party on almost every corner of the street, and Parisians actually having a chat with the international fashion crowd. A very different, freer atmosphere than during the ready-to-wear shows for women.”

With this Vogue Man we want to put the same energy, with a lot of fashion but above all a lot of fun. Think of cool outfits with a leading role for denim and good accessories, and men with taste, captured in their own authentic style. For example, cover star Yaw Tiëku Appiah created his looks according to the latest trends, DI-RECT guitarist Frans 'Spike' van Zoest took us into his own wardrobe and model Louis Baines shows his soft side in beautiful pastels.

Harpers Bazaar needs to be more exciting as it can be quite repetitive and probably starting to have more celebrities on covers to do better than Vogue…

I think the average tFS user is an outlier when it comes to this. I care that they use reprints because I used to buy every edition of Vogue I could find. Each edition had their own unique content (for the most part), I'm sure there are a few months that I own each edition: Vogue US, UK, Italia, Paris (RIP), Spain, Russia, Germany, Nippon (RIP), Australia, for... but for an average buyer, they were never going to go and chase down all these editions in the first place.

And you could find that newsstand sales of any particular month have nothing to do with the cover or content, and everything to do with some kind of special promotion, like price reduction stickers or a free bag or T-shirt.

There's also the small print of what they're including as circulation numbers. Free copies given out to companies? Digital subscriptions that were offered as part of a beauty box subscription? Or purely newsstand sales of the print edition?
 
despite it all, i'm really happy to hear magazines are doing fairly well internationally. there's still an industry and audience for fashion magazines, enough for them to not only just launch more editions, but also male fashion editions. that's wonderful and gives me hope for the future.

it still tickles me farneti is thriving at DLR but floundered and damn near ruined vogue italia. for that, i will never forgive him, but i recognize what he's done for that newspaper magazine. really, newspaper magazines/supplemental magazines might be the future of the industry. i'll support the english edition if i can find it.
