The New Gothic / Neogoth

^ Love it!
It's also a "warm-weather friendly" look, something I could try out ^_^

Yes, that's the one ... forgot to mention, there's ruching in front. The puff sleeves have elastic at the bottom and in this pic they've been rolled up so no puff ... at the store they suggested tucking the elastic under so it doesn't show, and I like it that way.

Also forgot to mention that the double collar/ruffle has little eyelash trim, used elsewhere in the collection as well ... it's sweet.

Also bought some silver tights that will go with this look when it's still cool in the spring ... DKNY Vintage Roses pattern, silver with black picking out the rose details. Also got some black ones with a flower & vine pattern, and got the roses in brown too. I'm still hunting another pattern that they're sold out of & not all the stores got :innocent:

Does anyone know of any good books about Edwardian style?

DosViolines, I don't really know what your climate is like ... do you have any cooler weather where you are? Or is it summer all the time?

oh...that's lovely ta-ta......
i would definitely wear that..
and the colour is so soft and pretty...
it's so versatile...you can layer it during colder weather and then wear it alone in the warmer weather....
but it looks more japanese than mj......
or even like hussein chalayan....

your tights sound good...silver w/blk roses...
sounds like the dk f/w collection really...
i think you are going more neo goth than you originally intended, no??...
:innocent:...:p ...

do you have any purple or plum tights?...
i always imagine some dark purplish tights with your purple-y mj jkt...
and i think it would look so good with the velvet tie ups...:flower:

***did you say camera?!?!...
fyi-everyone i know seems to have a canon...
unless they are trying to be trendy and cute in which case they have something that looks like a silver credit card......
but even at the magazine ...that's the camera that everyone uses to document the clothing...
i bought a canon last yr based on recommendations from tFS....
have a search...we have a really good thread on it...;)

 darn...did i miss that issue of harper's?...
hmm...i'll just have a look around today i guess...:ermm:...
i stopped looking at all mags a few years ago because i hated them all so much and since it's my livelihood, it became very depressing to see...
but this season is different...^_^...yay..!!

^ True, it would work as a layering piece ... not sure I have other layers to really go with atm though ...

I was intending neo Gothic touches for fall, but yes, I reckon I got a bit more into it than originally planned ;) I had such fun wearing my black coat/lace scarf (and new/old cameo ring!) this weekend. For spring I want to do Edwardian/neo Gothic ...

No, don't have any purple/plum tights ... will have to keep my eye peeled for some ... what I did see when shopping for tights over the past few days was this cerise color that I don't understand at all  I saw a pair of grey and purple paisley, but they seemed a bit busy ...

Thanks for the tip about Canon ... I will bear that in mind ;)

I live in Suriname. It's near the equator, so it's warm all year long.

DosViolines, you have my sympathy. I grew up in a predominantly cold climate, and now live in the reverse, but I can generally at least pretend to be dressing for the appropriate season during each 6 months ;)

No, not fuchsia ... cerise is the proper name for the color :p it's a red with a bit of pink in it.

Btw, isn't this interesting ... check out the image neimanmarcus.com chose for its spring preview:

it looks like it going to be a dark spring...
:ninja:...

^ every governess needs a dress like this ;)

"I rose; I dressed myself with care: obliged to be plain--for I had no article of attire that was not made with extreme simplicity--I was still by nature solicitous to be neat. It was not my habit to be disregardful of appearance, or careless of the impression I made: on the contrary, I ever wished to look as well as I could, and to please as much as my want of beauty would permit. I sometimes regretted that I was not handsomer: I somtimes wished to have rosy cheeks, a straight nose, and small cherry mouth; I desired to be tall, stately, and finely developed in figure; I felt it a misfortune that I was so little, so pale, and had features so irregular and so marked. And why had I these aspirations and these regrets? It would be difficult to say: I could not then distinctly say it to myself; yet I had a reason, and a logical, natural reason too. However, when I had brushed my hair very smooth, and put on my black frock--which, Quakerlike as it was, at least had the merit of fitting to a nicety--and adjusted my clean white tucker, I thought I should do respectably enough to appear before Mrs Fairfax; and that my new pupil would not at least recoil from me with antipathy. Having opened my chamber window, and seen that I left all things straight and neat on the toilet table, I ventured forth."

^ I wish I had time to re-read jane eyre again... :(

I'm just wondering, for those who are really working the inspiration from this thread (such as myself), how do you feel your neo-gothic look is being perceived? :ninja:

hi utopia..

frankly...
it's not that different to how i have been dressing for most of my life...

i think people are looking at me more in general these days...
seems like they are taking note...
almost studying...

but as i have said in the nyc st style thread...
everyone in nyc seems to be looking pretty good lately...
a combo of great weather and great trends happening...

*people are less scruffy, less hipster-y...more rock n roll and dark...
not seeing a lot of head to toe blk...just dark accents...
after all...it was the cover of the style section in the ny times...
so i'd say the trend is going over pretty well here...

:flower:
what about over there?...

I've gotten lots of compliments on individual pieces ... I don't think anyone's really commented on the overall look. I do get a lot of looks when I do the head-to-toe elegant black. I've been a bit dressier than usual, so probably some peeps at work think I'm interviewing  It was on the cover of our style section too, but I don't think it's very widely read

Good point. Even wearing lots of black, neogothic or not, many people perceive me as less friendly or more serious than they do when I'm wearing lighter colors. To the point that I now associate imposing, darkly-dressed gothic people as possibly friendlier kin and am tempted to go stand nearer to them than others when stuck in an elevator or mingling room.
