A WINNING NIGHT -

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was the big winner at the Baftas last night after winning four awards: Best Film, Best Supporting Actor for Jake Gyllenhaal, Best Adapted Screenplay and the David Lean Award for Achievement in Direction for Ang Lee. British actors Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz, nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively for
The Constant Gardener, both left disappointed after Philip Seymour was honoured for his performance in
Capote and Reese Witherspoon won for
Walk The Line. However, the British contingent was well represented by Thandie Newton, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in
Crash and James McAvoy, who took home the Rising Star award. Despite last night's torrential rain, the red carpet fashion line-up was no wash-out and turned out to be a typically glamorous affair, despite the fact that hems had to be held up as the stars walked into the Odeon at Leicester Square – and that Ruby Wax was handing them hot water bottles, ski gloves and scarves.
Charlize Theron was in Lanvin, Thandie Newton chose a Christian Lacroix gown to pick up her award for Crash, Mischa Barton wore Marchesa, Renee Zellweger was in black, backless Caroline Herrera, Neve Campbell in Roland Mouret, Christina Ricci in Prada, Diane Kruger in Dior, Imelda Staunton in Maria Grachvogel, Natalie Umbruglia in Alberta Ferretti, Rachel Weisz in Vivienne Westwood and Memoirs of a Geisha star Ziyi Zhang wore gold Giorgio Armani. "A soggy carpet, very English," quipped Theron on her way past photographers. (February 20 2006, AM)
