TomKat 'officialized' marriage before ceremony
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes exchanged Scientology wedding vows in a medieval Italian castle on Saturday, but had previously "officialized" their marriage in Los Angeles.
Publicists say such a move is customary for couples marrying outside the United States.
Arnold Robinson, Cruise's publicist, didn't immediately reply to an e-mailed question from the Associated Press about whether that meant the glamourous Hollywood couple had been married in a civil ceremony.
Fabrizio D'Agostino, a spokesman for the Church of Scientology for Rome, said an exchange of vows with a Scientology rite was not legally recognized in Italy, and that a civil union would also be required.
While the rites include rings and vows, they also include certain Scientology fundamentals, such as promising never to go to bed without communicating any differences.
Legalities aside, the US$3 million wedding in Bracciano, Italy before 150 invited guests -- and with thousands of fans outside -- was uniformly described as spectacular and the stuff of fairy tales.
Oil-fed torches and small candles flickered from the battlements and windows of the Odescalchi castle, which dates back to the 15th century.
Giorgio Armani dressed both Holmes and Cruise for the ceremony.
Cruise wore a single-breasted, navy-blue suit. His French collar shirt was made of the same fabric as Holmes' off-the-shoulder wedding gown.
Armani was one of the guests. He told the Associated Press that first Cruise, then Holmes, walked down a stone ramp lined with flag bearers in medieval costumes and to the roll of drums.
Vows were exchanged in a former stable decorated with white flowers.
"For the Americans this was very special, because Americans do not have this kind of thing back home, and they dream of such things in our beautiful country, and you can see the surprise and the awe on their faces," Armani said.
The 20-minute ceremony concluded with a "never-ending kiss." Some guests jokingly yelled out "stop, stop!" he said.
At the reception, Italian singer Andrea Bocelli serenaded TomKat. The couple, who became engaged after Cruise proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in June 2005, cut a five-tiered wedding cake made of white chocolate.
Fireworks went off above the castle, but a foggy night hurt the view.
Holmes gave Cruise a Vacheron Constantin watch as a wedding gift. The watch was engraved with the words "I love you."
The two spent their wedding night in the castle and will honeymoon in Tahiti, David Caplan of
Star Magazine told CTV Newsnet.
The guests
Seven-month-old Suri, the couple's daughter, arrived with her mother. She was dressed in white.
Cruise's two children with actor Nicole Kidman, Isabella and Connor, were also there, the publicists said in a statement.
David Miscavige served as best man for Cruise, while Nancy Blaylock, Holmes' sister, served as maid of honour.
Martin Holmes, Katie's father, walked her down the aisle. She carried bouquet of flowers that Armani made, which included calla lilies.
Guests included Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria and David Beckham and Roberta Armani, niece of the designer.
Brooke Shields also attended. Cruise had criticized her for using antidepressants after the birth of her first daughter, but she said in September he offered a heartfelt apology.
Oprah Winfrey didn't attend and actually wasn't invited, Caplan said.
"Plus she has not bought him a wedding present yet, so there may be some bad blood yet."
Cruise became extremely animated on Oprah's afternoon TV talk show when talking about his love for Holmes to the point where he started jumping on the couch.
That incident and others led Paramount Pictures to sever its relationship with Cruise this summer.
Caplan offered this theory: "Had Oprah gone to the wedding, it really would have reminded everyone how crazy Tom was when he jumped on her couch."
By having Oprah out of the scene, it took away a reminder of some of Cruise's recent erratic behaviour, he said.
However, Steven Spielberg, who has a long-standing professional relationship with Cruise (War of the Worlds, Minority Report), also didn't attend, Caplan said.
