TomKat 'officialized' marriage before ceremony

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes exchanged Scientology wedding vows in a medieval Italian castle on Saturday, but had previously "officialized" their marriage in Los Angeles.
Publicists say such a move is customary for couples marrying outside the United States.
Arnold Robinson, Cruise's publicist, didn't immediately reply to an e-mailed question from the Associated Press about whether that meant the glamourous Hollywood couple had been married in a civil ceremony.
Fabrizio D'Agostino, a spokesman for the Church of Scientology for Rome, said an exchange of vows with a Scientology rite was not legally recognized in Italy, and that a civil union would also be required.
While the rites include rings and vows, they also include certain Scientology fundamentals, such as promising never to go to bed without communicating any differences.
Legalities aside, the US$3 million wedding in Bracciano, Italy before 150 invited guests -- and with thousands of fans outside -- was uniformly described as spectacular and the stuff of fairy tales.
Oil-fed torches and small candles flickered from the battlements and windows of the Odescalchi castle, which dates back to the 15th century.
Giorgio Armani dressed both Holmes and Cruise for the ceremony.
Cruise wore a single-breasted, navy-blue suit. His French collar shirt was made of the same fabric as Holmes' off-the-shoulder wedding gown.
Armani was one of the guests. He told the Associated Press that first Cruise, then Holmes, walked down a stone ramp lined with flag bearers in medieval costumes and to the roll of drums.
Vows were exchanged in a former stable decorated with white flowers.
"For the Americans this was very special, because Americans do not have this kind of thing back home, and they dream of such things in our beautiful country, and you can see the surprise and the awe on their faces," Armani said.
The 20-minute ceremony concluded with a "never-ending kiss." Some guests jokingly yelled out "stop, stop!" he said.
At the reception, Italian singer Andrea Bocelli serenaded TomKat. The couple, who became engaged after Cruise proposed at the top of the Eiffel Tower in June 2005, cut a five-tiered wedding cake made of white chocolate.
Fireworks went off above the castle, but a foggy night hurt the view.
Holmes gave Cruise a Vacheron Constantin watch as a wedding gift. The watch was engraved with the words "I love you."
The two spent their wedding night in the castle and will honeymoon in Tahiti, David Caplan of Star Magazine told CTV Newsnet.
The guests
Seven-month-old Suri, the couple's daughter, arrived with her mother. She was dressed in white.
Cruise's two children with actor Nicole Kidman, Isabella and Connor, were also there, the publicists said in a statement.
David Miscavige served as best man for Cruise, while Nancy Blaylock, Holmes' sister, served as maid of honour.
Martin Holmes, Katie's father, walked her down the aisle. She carried bouquet of flowers that Armani made, which included calla lilies.
Guests included Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, Victoria and David Beckham and Roberta Armani, niece of the designer.
Brooke Shields also attended. Cruise had criticized her for using antidepressants after the birth of her first daughter, but she said in September he offered a heartfelt apology.
Oprah Winfrey didn't attend and actually wasn't invited, Caplan said.
"Plus she has not bought him a wedding present yet, so there may be some bad blood yet."
Cruise became extremely animated on Oprah's afternoon TV talk show when talking about his love for Holmes to the point where he started jumping on the couch.
That incident and others led Paramount Pictures to sever its relationship with Cruise this summer.
Caplan offered this theory: "Had Oprah gone to the wedding, it really would have reminded everyone how crazy Tom was when he jumped on her couch."
By having Oprah out of the scene, it took away a reminder of some of Cruise's recent erratic behaviour, he said.
However, Steven Spielberg, who has a long-standing professional relationship with Cruise (War of the Worlds, Minority Report), also didn't attend, Caplan said.

^Sounds like some science-fiction movie. Sooo ridiculous.

lol..... ridiculous? l could say the same for the Bible!

So many good points Anastascia!!

A friend of my family knows a woman who lives in a Scientology compound in Florida and she basically works for the organization for nothing, all her movements are monitored and she's been cut off from her friends and family because they are all suppressive persons.

My sisters worked in a hall that the Scienos rented out for recruiting sessions. They would actually barricade the doors of the hall with a statue of L Ron Hubbard and set a goal of how many hundreds of thousands they wanted to get from the new members and no one was leaving until the Scienos got the money. Oh and did you know that L Ron is currently hanging out behind the moon in his spaceship? yep that's what the Scienos told my sisters.

I have no problem with religion even though I'm an athiest. First off, Scientology doesn't believe in god or a higher power so I don't agree that they should be allowed to say that they are a religion. The only thing they worship is money. They prey on people. Furthermore their refusal to allow members to seek pyschiatric help or medication has actually resulted ind eaths and their stance on the issue is downright dangerous. It all stems from the fact that the American Psychiatric Association denounced the "religion" and compared their methods to brainwashing.

Back to the "wedding" which was apparently all for show, just like their relationship so it's kinda fitting.

Brooke looks great but after the way Tom slammed her "where has her career gone? and all that nasty stuff he spewed" I'm disappointed she's letting him use her in this way. Looks like Steven Spielberg did have the good sense to stay away. No definite sighting of the Travoltas and they are Scieno couple #2 so maybe their is a rift there?.

Apparently Kate has 2 other sisters who don't seem to have been invited. I'm just surprised Katie let 1 sis be her maid of honor instead of Scieno handler and bodyguard Jessica.

Oh and posh? you look like you plan to be standing on a street corner all night.

Oh we'll get pics, lots and lots of pics. I mean what is the point of hyping up your fake wedding ceremony and having endless press releases if you aren't going to top it all off with pics to try and snag even more positive and gushing press. Y'know a pic of Tom getting married just reinforces the fact that he loves women, he just loves women.

I'm wondering whether in the wedding pics they'll (a) have Katie hunch over or (b) stick Tom on a box so that Katie doesn't tower over him and make him look even more ridiculous. Although is that possible?

I look forward to the pic because you know these 2 will look manic as hell, Katie will be probably jumping up and down and screaming for joy while Tom cackles and looks directly in the camera for the best shot.

I think Tom paid Brooke to come to help his image.

^^ It was probably a free trip to Italy for her so I suppose I can't blame her for that, I'd love to go. Besides maybe she wanted a good laugh?

^^ wedding pic which you can enlarge. Don't like her dress, the front looks too fussy. Tom looks to be hanging onto her for dear life. I know it's a posed pic but it looks so terribly unromantic and forced. Then again I shouldn't expect anything more from these 2. I was no fan of Jen and Brad but at least they were y'know looking at one and another in their wedding pic and seemed to be connected.

Oh and I totally called it. In the wedding pic Tom is miraculously taller. Either they put lifts in his shoes or the Scienos have found some way to rob Katie of a few inches in height.

You know Katie doesn't look as happy as she should in that wedding photo above. I know it's just one photo but I get the feeling she wasn't as happy as one should at their own wedding. Maybe it was an uncomfortable situation due to her family being there. I've heard they're not often allowed in the picture. I know feeling awkard for having my own family around would dampen my wedding.

Hahaha. Heck, I'd be pretty glad to have a $3 million fake wedding. Just let me keep all the stuff.

What a very stiff and posed wedding photo...it looks like it was meant to be free and relaxed and romantic...to me it looks anything but. Maybe that just cycnical old me though...

i don´t understand: usually she´s taller than him, isn´t she? why not in this pic???

Barefoot? Hunching? Sloped floor? The thing that struck me the most about the picture is that they appear to be arm wrestling  And what is up with the fakey looking cavernous background? I know it's real rocks, but it still looks cheesy on film.

I'm not impressed with her dress. It's pretty, but custom made 2 million dollars pretty? I expected a lot more. It could have worked for me without with weird fan at the top and the plastic looking overlay, maybe. Still doesn't look custom made for 2 million. Maybe in person it's better? I do like the look of his suit, but want to push his hair back. You can see a larger picture of the same thing here: http://i9.tinypic.com/308v8xy.jpg

Personally, this is my favorite wedding picture so far: http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/World/2006/11/18/2405098.html

I know, I know, I wouldn't want someone taking pics of me all during my wedding day, and publishing ones where I looked like I was beckoning for help, and about to burst into tears.

Her hair is nice and shiny though. And I like her makeup in the big picture. Soft and understated.

Well, it's quite obvious that her knees are slightly bent in the wedding picture :). My best wishes to them anyway!

I think they look lovely.

I don't give a crap about the negative hype or comments or how people feel about this union... WHATEVER... they are a gorgeous couple, and I would wish any newly married couple the best, no matter what religion they are or what the ceremony was like or how they are in their personal lives. There's a whole other world out there that us observers don't know about it, so who are we to judge? That's a lot of what I've read, judgements... it's just so old. Why do people REALLY care so much? Just let it be...

That's just how I feel. ^_^ I know most feel differently. ;)
