UK Elle March 2010 : Liv Tyler by Rankin

I quite like the cover...but feel like the subscribers cover would be more appropriate on the newsstand cover. After all, isn't the number one rule of sales eye contact? Or at least being able to see the eyes?
Both are beautiful shots though.

I am however starting to get a bit concerned that every Elle cover is looking exactly the same. Just [insert model/actress here]. I LOVE the style of the covers but I feel like they should mix up the photography a little bit at least, so that each month feels fresh.

I love the COVER IMAGE but the formatting is terrible

this makes me regret subscribing :( newsstand cover is better and no naomi!!!

i have not got my first issue yet, will i get it before the jan 4 date it is released on newsstands ?

^I usually get mine before it hits the stands, yes. My March 2008 issue arrived on February 2nd, which was early.

Wanted to see Naomi,but...

We will be seeing Naomi, she's on the Limited Edition copies.

I'm sure the Limited Edition copies will never get to my newsstand but then, I'm not a big fan of Naomi. But still, she IS a super and having a copy of Elle with her on the cover would be great.

Oh my lovely Liv! I will definitely be getting this issue. And if they keep this up with their choice of cover stars, a subscription alongside it.

... That said, though, I don't love either of these particular covers. Though I confess I love Liv Tyler in almost every respect, there is so much more you can do with looks like hers than this drabness.

To begin with, why all the depressing black and grey? For once you have a sparkly, strong, unique and genuinely stunning Amazon of a woman who just screams color and vibrance, and you put her in a studio that could just as well be the morgue?? For goodness sake, why?!

Actually, I'm going to go ahead and answer that myself. Somehow, certain people have it in their heads that it is somehow edgy, different and therefore interesting by default to style Liv Tyler specifically in this non-glamorous way. And to some extent it is certainly warranted. If you look at the magazine coverage on her from the most recent years, it's pretty much been a series of repeat performances from one publication after another, with the exception of her UK Harper's Bazaar ed from 2008.

However, unlike the 2008 Bazaar ed, which was a genuinely different take on Liv, this feels half-hearted and possibly slightly unintended. The black combined with the lighting really isn't flattering on Liv's pale skin, nor is the dress she is wearing, though possibly only combined with these particular pose(s). I'm amazed how you can produce something this uninspired of a women as inspiring as Liv.

Finally, I'm going to jump on the repetition-bandwagon here and comment on this being too similar to their previous covers, particularly them coming out with something like this so soon after Helena Christensen's cover, which I was really very much reminded of by this. Also, does it irk anyone else that the subscriber's and newsstands covers are almost identical? Again -- why?

But I will reserve (the rest of) my criticism until I've had a proper look at the cover. I have feeling I will like it more, or at least hate it less, in full-res. Thanks for posting the preview, vogue28!

I like this but I'm really anticipating for Naomi's cover. What does Limited edition mean? Only subscribers get it or it will be out in newsstands but in a limited copy? Hope to get it

If it's like the previous Limited Edition covers, then it will only be available at selected locations in London.

Maybe it'll make it to elsewhere in the country, or be randomly sent out to subscribers, but I doubt it.

Wow, I haven't even bought my February issue and they have this already. The cover bores me though. But I do love Liv, so I'm excited.

^ OMG! Same here! THe feb issue here comes with a free ELLE COLLECTIONS S/s report magazine

↑ If the covers were the least bit interesting I wouldn't mind shelling out a horrendous sum for it but this is beyond me. Was the Feb issue a must buy? I still see it in the newsstands and I'm thinking of buying it....

Elle UK covers are just getting soooo boring and bland to me.

yes its a good thing the content makes up for it usually. unlike vogue

^ I agree with you! And If you're on a very tight budget (BECAUSE OF MARCH ISSUES) You can always buy the pocket size/travel size issue... its A LOT cheaper than the regular one

↑ A Travel sized Elle? Really? Wow! Never seen it before! Yeah, Elle UK's quite huge by magazine standards so it's a bit hard to lug around.

Yeah there is! I thinks it's as big as TEEN VOGUE
