UK Vogue July 2016 : Renée Zellweger by Patrick Demarchelier

I'm not afraid of the sight of age on someone's face, but I do want to see older women looking confident in fashion magazines, as best expressed through their pose, because wisdom, power and self-awareness are what you should be gaining through age. Slouching and slumping should be left to the teenagers.

Wonderfully said.

And can't edit, but if Helmut Lang or Phoebe Philo put a beyond old lady in their campaigns or let her walk the calwalk I have nothing against it cause they do it genuinly. Because they do think they are beautiful, interesting, that have a special spark...

So the only way for an "old women" to look chic is to be Philo/Lang approved? Otherwise they shouldn't be put on a fashion context? Ridiculous

I think what people mean is she looks older than she should. She has not aged as well as others have. It wouldn't be fair to compare her to JLo or Salma who are freaks of nature who never age but someone like Julianne Moore has also aged incredibly well while inevitably growing older.

I feel Renee looks "old" here because I actually don't think she's old. I feel like I'm looking a relatively young person who has aged beyond her actual years. If that makes any sense.

She's not on the cover because Alessandra thinks it's great to have an old women showing you can look wonderful (she doesn't) when you are over 47 (she looks 55 at least), that what really matters is what you've achieved... She's on the cover because she has a multimillion dollar project in her back and it's a win win combination, a way to make money. Not because they want to end with the "tiranny" of youth... Next month it'd be Anna Ewers looking amazingly young and beautiful and I rather have that than this. It's more coherent with what Vogue and fashion stand for.

Let's not forget the demographic of the film she's promoting - women beyond the age of 30. So it all ties in well together, imo. I didn't mean that by giving Renee a cover 'they'd want to end the tyranny of youth', that's a tremendously ambitious move to expect from Vogue. And of course the age issue is a marketing effort, but one cannot deny that it does have some form of impact on the public at large. With only one issue per year they present tailor made features and the like for a group of women hardly ever represented in the industry. One issue to me sounds better than nothing.
I thought you lot complained that fashion is stuck in a state of stasis? Giving the cover month after month to the same type of girl is the very definition of stasis because there's zero variety.

And I personally never used to have a problem with the word 'old', but the way it's being used on here (with sneer, insult, and mock) is actually rather nauseating. So ultimately I take issue.

I quite like it! I was not expecting Renée to show up on the cover at all, I understand that she has a new film to promote but it still seems random - rather like when Uma Thurman showed up out-of-the-blue on the 'Ageless Style' issue a few years ago. I'm not complaining though because I really like her - it's nice to have somebody unexpected on the cover and she feels like a fresh choice even though she had quite a few magazine covers in her heyday.

The image itself does feel a little amateurish and could have been by anyone, however I do enjoy it. The colours, backdrop and the dress all give a nice Spring/Summer feel which I appreciate because UK Vogue's July issue has been terribly drab in the past (see last year's cover with Stella Tenant.) I also like the idea of that pose, but the execution is lacking a little.

So overall I like it and I am interested to see the inside shots, I hope one of them is an alternate cover try. I love it when they print shots inside that were clearly composed for the cover but didn't get used, I like to imagine how the editors landed on one particular shot over another ^_^

There's a difference in getting 'older' and getting 'old'
We all get older but we don't have to loose our elan.

I think Renée looks fine but more color on the lips or cheeks would have been more chic. However, this image isn't right for a fashion magazine, not even Elle.
I absolutely hate when they choose a picture with hands or hair all over the face ( ala Madonna, Demi Moore, Renée). Feels so insecure.
If your aging, by everything good in the universe, be confident about it, no matter what!
I've seen more flattering covers on Ladies' Home Journal tbh.
But the entire Vogue catalog has devolved into celebrity tabloid.
It's all about promoting the new movie, CD, concert, TV show season, etc.
It's not about fashion anymore.
They just say it is by putting a celebrity or starlet in a designer dress and, 'taking some lovely photos'.

So happy to see her on the cover, but just wished she would have looked more relaxed. Maybe it's been too long, but she looks very uncomfortable.

Yes, but paradoxically, the people who say that she does indeed look old use the word to describe a simple, neutral fact. (There's nothing wrong with not looking 20 anymore, and again, I never said that.) The people who claim she's not old at all use the word as if it necessarily meant 'she looks bad and doesn't belong on a cover'. So that is, in my opinion, where there's sneer, insult, and mock.

She is 47. Since when does being 47 count as young? It doesn't, period, and it never has. She's not half-dead either, of course, but if you operate with binary oppositions (which doesn't make sense in the first place) and categorize her as either young or old, she's definitely not young. Which, again, is the fate of all human being, and I don't see anything insulting in calling her old.
I think she pretty much looks her age, at least when you try to ignore all of her horrible plastic surgery. This discussion reminds me a bit of the notorious downsizing in stores: The fact that you now can claim that you're a size 2 instead of the size 6 you were before doesn't make you any slimmer.

To everyone: she's middle aged. Not young, not old. And nothing wrong with that. She's halfway through her life and ready to make a comeback. Here's to hoping she succeeds.

What is she wearing? I don't like it at all.

Ironic that she's covering the 'Ageless Style Issue' after famously distorting her face due to a botched facelift.

*It's nice to see an Asian on the cover tho.
(sorry I had to)

Ok. Got it. Let's just end it right there. I'll not hold someone else's limited sense of vocabulary against them.

I for one would never say to someone's face that "you're old" or that they look old. Who would take kindly to that? I certainly wouldn't and I'm in my early 30s w only few very fine lines.

Let's not kid ourselves. Claiming to pass this comment off in matter of fact, neutral manner is absurd considering the immense societal pressure, obsession and pursuit of fountain of youth: HELLO Fashion and Cosmetics, Beauty industry.

Renee is a beautiful woman, wrinkles and all. BUT that does not excuse this unflattering cover image. GASP. How about a joyous, expressive face with beautifully captured lines not smoothed over by Photoshop?

When was the last time she´s been on any cover? Good for her for landing Vogue!
I think that the minimal makeup is on purpose, to show she´s got her old face back but this looks too dull for a fashion magazine imo... some color on her cheeks wouldn´t have hurt.

Lovely surprise to see Renée on a Vogue cover. I have a feeling she completely disappeared after Miss Potter in 2006, so I'm looking forward to see her coming back. And very excited to see the new Bridget Jones.

I HATE ageless issues, it's like being older is some separate category of beauty. I do not like people looking prim on covers much less older women looking prim, adding to the fact she clearly did something to her face it does not make a winning combination.
