Quite happy to see so much "diversity" but sadly I'm not crazy about the issue. I'm not saying they should all jump or smile but overall I'm not feeling the energy/vibe from the covers to the eds. I find it a little sad and static, not as uplifting or exciting as I'd have liked it to be.
Like the cover, Fancy That is pretty much American Vogue's brand of femininity. I also wish they were afforded more pages. I still don't know what Tyler Mitchell is trying to say with his photography, but as a staple US Vogue edit it does the job.
But the highlights of the images are definitely Naomi Osaka, Lizzo's uberglam beauty shot (she reminds me of Marsha Ambrosius), and Akiima's quiet grace.
Have seen this done in VI 20 years ago already but photographed by masters
Warhol ed by Meisel with Kylie Bax from 1996 or Couture on black models by Lindbergh from 1997
One thing I love about American Vogue is how they manage to make their formula fresh again.
There’s nothing new because Vogue is what it is but at the same time, with new photographers, new models and new talents, the formula is interesting again.
Not having to rely on Testino or Demarchelier anymore is the best ever for Vogue US.
I love Fancy That! I’m even surprised to love the Dior dress!
All the eds are great but the Art Gallery ed is tragic. From the styling to the execution, it’s a fail...
Parr's editorial is just sad, too reminiscent of Meisel's ''Fusion'' with Kylie Bax in a bad way, because it's so shamefully ugly. The diversity for once doesn't feel forced, it's just casual and stunning! Tyler's editorial is simple but the girls are just outstanding. The rest is just boring. If this was a different kind of publication, Ugbad's close-up would've made a pretty cover.
I find Yai great in Fancy That. It'd have been nice to have a solo shot with her. On top of being stunning and graceful, she brings a nice melancholic vibe.
I like that Tyler Mitchell is becoming one of the staple photographers for both US and UK Vogue. I can't agree with some previous comments I've read that his photography is not recognizable, I can tell it's him by the stoic look of his subjects, the perspective, the low contrast and shadow play.
