US Vogue September 2021 by Ethan James Green

Katie's out here working over time to make this guy happen. She obviously want to achieve that Wintour - Galliano status but Tomo already designed himself into the corner so... Good luck with that.

It's comical that Anna has Marc Jacobs, McQueen and Galliano while Katie has Tomo.

the Leibovitz & Coddington is indeed a pretty editorial and it does feel very old Vogue Magazine…

I wouldn’t mind a little bit more of that on Vogue as in more Grace with other photographers and some more Tonne Goodman too…
hence why I totally agree with @Lola701: new storytelling with new photographers!

Unless he does a rebranding à la Jacquemus, it’s really hard for me to see how Tomo would breakout.

Creativity (really relative there) or crazy pseudo-arty fashion is great but it doesn’t touch people. Clothes that doesn’t question our way of living or that don’t have any sense of wearability rarely end up being relevant.

I've always found Leibovitz work more than questionable and...I still do. Mikael Jansson does it better and cheaper, stop lining that woman's pockets...she cannot even pay proper retouchers.

Stunning Annie shoot.

We all know her work is very hit or miss, and sometimes the post-production is extremely questionable, but at other times I happen to really enjoy the CGI-meets-oil-painting quality to her pictures. It's the complete antithesis to the modern fashion photography aesthetic and so it feels refreshing here.

Having a mixed bag of photography styles in an issue makes me appreciate the indie photography look a LOT more. It's terribly dull when everything is shot in a white studio with washed out models, or shot in front of some creased up bedding pinned up on the wall. Annie's work is the summer blockbuster to the new generations' indie flicks: there's time and place for all of them when balanced properly. It's nice to have a STAR photographer in the issue as well. Of course I think it's important to support new talent and foster the next generation of photographers, but it's so much nicer when the old-school have a presence as well.

US Vogue has been somewhat lost since they (understandably) stopped working with Testino - he nailed the "accessible but still aspirational glamour" that defined them for so long, and they're yet to fill that void in my opinion. I thought it was going to be Mikael Jansson who stepped in to that role, but they don't use him nearly enough as they should do for covers.

…the last shot is very blurry, etc.

... in some of these the subjects are in sharp focus and so obviously pasted onto blurry overly filtered green backgrounds and in the last shot, everything's blurry.

I have to apologise to you, my lovely people :(, because that last blurry photo from Earthly Delights ISN'T a part of an official printed editorial, but (unfortunately!) an outtake. I found it yesterday on someone's Instagram profile, and being in a hurry as I usually am - despite it was't posted on an official Vogue site, and its size and quality were extremely poor in comparison to another ones! - I automatically assumed that it must have been a part of a printed ed as well.

Today, when I finally got my Vogue's digital edition and discovered it, I found a much better quality of the photography in question - but still a way too inferior in comparison to another ones - on Aldis Hodge's Instagram account, so I'll ask our precious mods to swap it and to emphasise how it is actually - an OUTTAKE!

Not sure if Annie still has an in-house team like she did back in the 2000s— of which BTW, was when she was producing her strongest and most creative work. (Someone that worked with her back then commented that she had a dozen 30” Apple Cinema Displays running simultaneously in her studio back then. That’s a lot of work going on!).

“Earthly Delights” is… decent enough for 2021, but in no way would they ever compare to the superior creativity and post-production quality of her 2000s work. At least they’re a pretty escape of the mundane catalogue output of the covershot. But it’s really more about welcoming Grace back than Annie or Karen/Natalia: They’re not adding anything to the production, frankly. As decent enough as these “shots” are, they really can’t escape the desktop wallpaper look and feel. When the gentrification of desktop wallpaper has caught up to your signature aesthetic, you know it’s time to either move on or hang it up. And Annie hasn’t done either.

Only the Leibovitz/Grace editorial save this issue because the other features are bad & boring. Glad than Grace come back to work on US Vogue (only this time).

I'll take the Leibovitz editorial - it's good enough, certainly for today's standards. At least it's ten times better than the awful edits Grace has been producing for UK Vogue (and D*cument Journal...LOL, why does someone of her stature work for that magazine?). Don't even get me started on her ***** jar collection, oh Lord!

Annie has an obsession with gold and her greens do always look really washed out and a bit gross, but yeah the composition of the shots, the locations (thanks Mary?) and styling are satisfying enough for me here. I like that it doesn't veer into the obvious fantasy territory of some of the fairy-tale shoots; their appeal kind of peaked in the late Noughties. The question is, how will it look in print though?

Oh, and Anton Corbijn contributed to this issue? Always a get, even if he hasn't really done a fashion shoot that's really lived up to the standard of his portraits or films. There's your next blockbuster collab, Grace, go for it!

Finally got the chance to flip this issue, quite bummed that there is no MET editorial! Only 3 pages article with some mannequin shots by Stefan Ruiz and a portrait of Andrew Bolton.

Now that i can compare this issue with the sept issue of UK Vogue, i noticed that they share a lot of articles as well, not just the editorials. They shared Sally Rooney article, John Galliano & Tomo Koizumi article, Prada editorial & Daniel Jackson editorial. Although the way they present the editorial for each issue is different, in UK Vogue the Prada ed is longer and there are some shots that doesn't appear in US Vogue, same with the Dan Jackson ed, the editorial is not exactly the same, they laid it out differently and they picked different shots. I personally like the way US Vogue laid out the editorial better. Now i'm kinda curious to see how Vogue Paris and Vogue Italia present both of the editorials..

I have mixed feelings about the shared content, I'm pretty sure the regular readers that doesn't keep up with magazine industry news doesn't care, but for us fashion lover that usually buy various Vogues from different country, i personally see no point buying different issues of Vogue anymore if 40% of the content is the same. But in the end, business is business, they have to make profit as much as possible and cut costs..

I share the same sentiments! My first reaction was to compare the contents page by page after I got the two editions. I am also curious to see if other editions will use all the same or even fewer images vs. the US/UK edition, or they have the chance to pick a few exclusive shots.

I will see how they play the sharing contents game in the near future. My guess is that for important months like March and September, each edition will still produce exclusive covers, with a few shared eds/features. But for other months, perhaps we will see the same cover story appearing in several editions. In that case, I don't think I will still purchase different editions like I currently do any more...

Some cover reveal vids! It looks like Vogue is still getting the engagement they're getting should it have been a celeb. It's only spread out with various posts.
Have to say, their social media strategy is next level.

I knew we were going to get a model issue this year, and september no less! I thought the cover was nice but the editorial was absolutely amazing, I love the take on models inside Vogue's headquarters, not an original idea at all, but beautifully executed.

I'm obsessed with the model editorial, even if this was shared with every single edition. Definitely Daniel was inspired by Toscani, that's why this look like an ELLE Italia editorial. I only dislike Hailey's picture.
