Vanity Fair August 2018 : Kendrick Lamar by Annie Leibovitz

Is Annie on a contract and they have to use her?

How pedestrian. They couldn’t even style him properly.

I like Kendrick Lamar, but seriously this is a random cover choice.

One thing I’ve noticed with the new VF is that all covers feel so cold? Also, where’s the fashion

Another miss for me, I'm afraid. And I still don't get his hype.
It doesn't look much different to his last GQ cover, the one with the fur. To think Radhika actually oversee each and every cover shoot in person, except of course the one with Prince Harry and Meghan.

Will have to flip through this before buying, or wait for a review.

She's just about the only link Anna and Radhika have to Vanity Fair's regular readers. Take that away and they may as well pack it in. I don't inherently loathe Annie's work, but what she's done under Radhika so far is astonishingly subpar. I'm fed up with these in-your-face portraits of people looking rough.

I don't mind the idea of focusing on a different sort of celebrity - but there has to be something SPECIAL about what the magazine does with these people to make me want to look twice, want to read about it, want to hand over my money.

He still looks cute and i still love him but this cover is kinda meh...
I mean, he is wearing a hoodie and a t-shirt!
Sometimes i feel like Annie's name is just used as pre name-dropping. Faena or Sgura could have done this if we are going for this type of things...

Why are both VF and Glamour using mug shots for their covers this month?

Really? Is it normal the EIC going to the shoot?

I can't think of a more timely cover subject and a better get for a magazine like Vanity Fair. He's just off winning his Pulitzer and has become the man of the hour. The picture is too clean for my liking—call me crazy I always liked the shoots where the cover star was wearing something wild, or doing a very stagey pose—but that seems to be their new aesthetic.

That's a great portrait shot of Kendrick.
I hope the interview is just as good.

Not to my knowledge, it isn't. Unless it's a really big or important shoot. Graydon often attended the first few Hollywood cover shoots in the early years, or other big coups. But for Radhika to oversee Lena Waithe or Emilia Clarke in session, I dunno, doesn't she have have more pressing issues to attend to? I guess she wants to make sure she's getting the right type of images, because I doubt VF photographers hand over their entire film to editors.

Perfect choice and he pulls off such a simple portrait because the man got presence! However I can’t see this new strategy working for them in the long term, sales wise.
