Vogue Italia April 2009 : Eliza Cummings by Steven Meisel

Frankly, I couldn't care less about the model, and you guys shouldn't either. It was one thing when Meisel was doing a theme issue around the young British hipsters, because personality was everything, but here she is just a model doing a job.

And she is doing a wonderful job. I love the cover, it's very evocative and the colors are beautiful. I can't wait to see the main editorial, I hope it has a similar wanderlust feel.

I even like the Portia pictures. Again, its not about her personality. Her face somewhat reminds me of a young Chloe Sevengy, and I like the styling of the ed.

It would of looked 10 times better without that annoying crease.

When it comes to magazines, I'm a little bit crease-phobic, even when they're obviously artifical. But I really like the idea of the effect - full marks to Vogue Italia being visually inventive.

She looks like a nomad woman to me, someone from a tribe that's forever on the move in order to survive, and the folded-up photo is a historical document that someone's rediscovered from the records of a geographical expedition in 1920. She was a daughter decorated with jewels, not yet married - but who knows what happened to her?

no one on tfs who has the magazine is willing to do a review yet. it will come eventually. just be patience. :flower:

i love the cover. i'm unsure about the crease though. eliza looks amazing, but she doesn't look like herself. what's the point in using her if they are just going to airbrush the hell out of her? i hope the contents are good. i really want a good reason to buy this.
why ok to see kate moss look the way she does at the top shop party
and then airbrush the hell out of her for the ads .? i never understand why thats o.k. on kate ,who looks nothing like any of her ads. and hasn't in years.but people never mention this at all. do people like to live inthe past
and like to remember what she used to look like rather than the reality .

Claudia's editorial certainly looks promising. Love the expression in the first shot.

I agree it looks great so far. I don't like Portia's edit though, not my taste.
I agree tigerrouge, I'm also a crease-phobic person but it's nice to see a magazine do something new. They knew it was a risk and they took it and I applaud them! I still don't like the cover and I think the only reason a lot of people like it is because it doesn't look like her. If it did look like her I would hate it, right now it's bearable. :innocent:

Stunning. I'm not familiar with her but she looks great.

well, i'd actually love to see Darya getting this cover, because i can't really see how this's going to change Eliza's career. as for Darya, not only it'd be a huge success for her, but her severe look would complement the mood much better than digitally enhanced Eliza. but she does look great on this cover no matter what.

The cover looks amazing. I have always liked Eliza and I was also very glad when I heard she was going to be on the cover. And this is just very good.

Portias facial experession just seems odd to me. Otherwise the image looks okay, but I just cant work it out

when kate first got started she looked the same in person as she did in editorials. today she's older, so mother nature has aged her and naturally photoshop plays a bigger role in her work now. kate's personality and aura keeps her going in this industry, not just her looks.

eliza however is a very young fresh model. so there really is no need to airbrush her so much. it's a waste of money. airbrushing her so much just lets us know that meisel and his team were not happy with how her face was looking originally on film. which leads me to question why they would use her in the first place if they don't like the way she comes across in photos.

eliza obviously got this cover on personality merit, which isn't a comforting thought to me since eliza doesn't come across well in interviews. :ermm:

Yeah, Mother Nature along with cigarettes, alcohol and too much partying.

The problem I have is that Eliza only got the cover because of her image and who she is yet, the art direction and everything could have fit any model. I would not have been surprised if Eliza was on the cover sticking her fingers up or topless with a cigarette in her mouth. But, to treat her as if she were any other model and not an exception is just ridiculous.

i'm just so sick of eliza. enough already. portia's ed is disgusting too. what a waste of paper.

I'm blown away by this cover when I don't realise who the model is, it has the non descript appeal, stays neutral, the image is very inspirational in itself, wild and timeless, very accurate to the current mood..
When I realise who the model is (I'm actually not a fan of her previous work), it can't stay neutral anymore but good feelings remain, it doesn't have a negative impact on the picture. It actually adds a feeling of surprise and refreshes the whole image that has many inherant qualities but might lack of a special kick, even if it's a relevant theme regarding the current situation...
With Eliza being evocative more than provocative, it's a plus that creates the shock of the unseen and offers a total package at the end... It shows that you can be timeless and valeur sûres oriented and still manage to create a surprise if you have a good trick in mind...
