So recently it seems that my magazines are delivered by Snail Mail (still waiting for my textbooks to come

). But Vogue, W, and Allure finally came in this weekend.
Mario Testino shoots Charlize Theron in YSL for Oct US Vogue cover. This image is one of the best things from this issue, along with Diana Dondoe's one-pager for Donna Karan and the article on Chanel's to-die-for limited-edition jacket. The fashion editorials range from mediocre (Daria looks like a middle-aged British aristocrat visiting her country house in tweed suits, by Mestino) to bad (Daria outshines Elise and Hana modelling volumnious coats, by Steven Meisel) to stinking (Caroline Trentini in god-awful eyeliner posing with a variety of digi-cams, by Arthur Elgort--almost identical to their Sept collaboration). Charlize Theron's editorial was an homeage to Helmut Newton but the air-brushing really diliuted the ferocity of it. And you can see Charlize's butt cleavage in one of the pictures--yes, we are talking about US Vogue.
Much has been said about Steven Meisel's "sexual revolution" editorial for Oct W, but if you've come across his most recent work for Italian Vogue (July and Sept) you'd realize the W ed is simply a replicate for his more superior works published else where. All of the eds have women dressed in tailored blacks (power suits, black little dress) seeking to please the opposite sex, or trying to get the men to please them. The first time I saw it I liked it somewhat, but now it's just a cliche.
The best ed is Paolo Roversi's photograph of Lisa Cant (genius casting), Heather Marks, and Caroline Trentini (darn, she was not this annoying when she first came out), all dressed in couture or at least couture-quality gowns from the ready-to-wear collections. The styling is superb, the atmosphere was signature Roversi, and if you don't have a subscription to W, this might be the only reason for you to invest in this issue. The ads and articles are pretty sub-par.
So, I might be the only person who still cares to mention Allure. It seems that, beginning this year, Elle has downgraded to Allure-quality and Allure is now, hm, Cosmo Girl-quality. This issue is a slight improvement, mainly because of the successful styling, but the content/articles are a waste of paper.
Eds:
Marija headlines Allure's beauty report. For once she looks comfortable beinga model! Too bad the beauty report itself was done in a half-@$$ed way.
Coat Check by Michael Thompson is a nice studio shoot with beautiful, wearable coats. I'd love it if the mods were not Rianne and Michelle Buswell (who's been in Allure 4 times this yr).
Top Secrets has a crimson-lipped Heather Marks. I like some of the clothes on the runway but I wish they could have been put together with more imagination here. Can't quite swallow as served.
The good news is that next month Diana Dondoe will have her Allure debut in a denim ed! Caroline Winberg will be in the beauty ed. Cover will go to Angelina Jolie, who also gets Nov. W to promote "Alexander."
