:bounce: danke! :punk:

In the past week or so September DETAILS and GQ came in.

Justin Timberlake is on the cover of GQ and Matt Leblanc is on the cover of DETAILS

I'm back in the US... Finally had access to my subscribed copies!

US Vogue: So much hoopla, but is it really worth it? True, the advertising section is gold (where else would you find the full 50-pg Ann Taylor "Anniversary" ad with models such as Angela Lindvall, Maja, Trish Goff, Mini Anden, etc.), but the editorials did not quite measure up.

Daria, Natalia, Gemma, and photographer Steven Klein headlined the opening editorial "Day Dreams" which was conceptually identical to Klein's "Total Ladies" last Sept. (robotic beauties dressed in layered, lady-like ensembles) but stylistically inferior. Except for the opening page and the closing page, both Daria and Natalia looked weird, leaving Gemma Ward to shine. Gisele Bundchen's collaboration with Craig McDean on menswear-inspired clothing, appropriately titled "About A Boy," was mediocre at best. They are supposed to make Gisele look chic in menswear, instead of making her look like a man. "Staying Alive," the Mario Testino-lensed editorial which pays homage to Kate Moss's career longetivity and sense of style, was far too short and had a bland selection of clothes. Their last collaboration for US Vogue's "Age Issue" in 2001 celebrated Kate's eccentricities and was much better. The only interesting thing from the Kate article was Kate's admittance on how Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington took her under their wings and her remark on today's girls. Because there are so many girls to choose from right now, the careers of models tend to be short-lived. Therefore, they've learned how to take care of themselves and to be on time. In other words, the partying days are over. Patrick Demarchelier captured Daria's beauty but made Eugenia look quite puffy in "The 24/7 Fur." Standard studio shoot, which was a jarring contrast to the extravagent furs, but Demarchelier's lighting is commendable. The best editorial of the bunch has to be the supermodel tribute, lensed by Steven Meisel and dedicated one page to each of the nine cover girls. Then, there came three poorly executed editorials which should never see the light of day: "Magic in the Makeup" (Lisa Cant/Iriving Penn), "Couture Club" (Hana, Raquel Zimmermann, Caroline Trentini/Annie Leivobitz), and "Say It with Diamonds" (Caroline Trentini/Arthur Elgort). In terms of articles, there are three designer interviews: Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta, and Giorgio Armani--Anna Wintour's awkward PR battle with Armani is finally over.

I would recommend buying this issue for the cover and the ads, but the whole magazine gets a B from me.

US Bazaar owes their best September cover (as well as the best September cover this year) to Gisele. As far as I can tell, it is doing brisk business on the newsstands, even more so than Vogue. But qualitatively, the magazine is still sinking. The editorials are nothing to write home about, except the Julia Stegner shoot. I would not recommend buying it except for the cover. C+

US Allure with Kristen Dunst on the cover is a joke. Both the editorials and makeup articles sucked.

For October...

Marie Claire: Britney Murphy in Armani Collection
Teen Vogue: Kristen Dunst in Chloe
Elle: Beyonce in the yellow dress that Natalie Portman wore not too long ago
Jane: Mischa Barton, nice cover
Lucky: Rachel Blison in Marc by Marc Jacobs
V: Gwen Stefani
Vanity Fair: Jude Law
Cosmopolitan: Katie Holmes

I thought Linda V. and Julia S. looked good in "Fall Lineup" and Linda V. particularly ravishing in "Bedroom Hair."

And Erin Wasson fans will love "Risky Business."

I agree. Beautiful shots.

I just recently bought the september issue of Vogue and I agree, I wasn't much impressed by the editorials. I liked the little smidget on Kate Moss, being that she's my number one favorite model, but I definitely think they could've used better pictures, especially since Sienna Miller is hot on her tail. Love them both, though.

I really enjoy reading UK's Glamour - the mini-version. I always love the covers and everything inside, although the ed's at the very back tend to be quite boring (with boring models, also.)

Wasn't impressed either with Nylon... I do like Bazaar (lots of runway shot) especially their editorials, and I do buy US Elle alot. I have to leaf through the magazine before I buy it, unless I'm being compulsive or desperate for something to look at. I like the UK versions - actually, I like most versions unless it's a horrible issue. There. Much easier said. ;)

Okay, the September Allure is not atrocious, but it is pretty weak by September standards. The articles are sub-par and the highlights on makeup, which is traditionally Allure's specialty, pale to other magazines'. I like Nicole Trunfio's pictures in the makeup ad and Julia Stegner's hair ed, but the rest is pretty ho-hum, especially Erin Wasson's Risky Business. Still, thanks for sharing the scans for those who might be interested.

Quick notes...

Mini Anden has a lovely, albeit generic, clothing editorial in Shop Etc.'s debut issue. BTW, the magazine as a whole is pretty dismal. I'd imagine that Lucky will still be the shopaholic's go-to guide.

Nylon with Jessica Miller on the cover (she also has an editorial "Scarlett Red" and a one-page interview) made her look like a bat with that red eye shadow. I am not a fan, but I bought it anyway for the 8-pg Armani Exchange ad starring Alessandra Ambrosio. Liisa Winkler also has an editorial.

Harper's & Queen with Liya Kebede on the cover was okay. I bought it only for the 4-pg Angela Lindvall article. My favorite model has been doing much PR for her side project, the Collage Foundation, and has appeared in HoBo magazine, Organic Life, and now Harper UK. Erin O'Connor has an editorial, but she looks pretty glum in it.

Oct's Teen Vogue made Kirsten Dunst look aglow on the cover. A stronger issue than September, but not as good as August.

September Paris Vogue, from what I remembered, was a disaster, but it does have Daria and Isabeli.

And finally, Elise winning the cover of Vogue Italia again, wearing Prada:

It's been a long time since she graced the cover by herself. Lest take a break from Daria and Stam.

Kirsten Dunst on UK's Oct Elle wearing Chloe's gold sequin capelet. This is an exceedingly good cover for UK Elle. Wouldn't mind if it is for the US, actually (the Beyonce cover is unimaginative). With that tag line "Jake is the love of my life but I have to leave him," it will sell briskly, no doubt. Anyway, Ms. Dunst is clearly enamored with Chloe. A trio of Chloe looks she's done with US Vogue, Teen Vogue, and UK Elle, respectively:

Anyway, this has been a triumphant season for Chloe, and most of the editors' favorites were not even in their ad campaign!

Are there ed-like photos accompanying this article or shots of her like in the Organic Style?

No, only a single picture with Angela holding Dakota, her son. But it is a nice, previously-unseen pic.

Excellent, thank you. The issue I contemplated getting yesterday was sealed.

Note to self:

Purchases of October (in addition to my subscribed mags): Esquire with Gisele on cvr :P

Possibilities:
1. Vanity Fair with Jude Law
2. UK Elle with Kirsten Dunst (sounds like a good issue)

Also...

Justin Timberlake on cover of Sept US GQ (Mischa Barton gets UK GQ)
Matt LeBlanc on cover of Detail
Matt Damon on cover of Vital, a new men's magazine

Japanese Vogue October 2004
-----------------------------------

Cover: Natalia V by Craig McDean
I love this cover - cute pose, cute dress and lovely colors!

Notable ads: *Diana Dondoe for Nina Ricci - glamorous and dark, I like it but I'm not smitten.
* Hana for Epoca - 'girl walking across the street' kind of shot which looks like it might be the work of Elgort or Watson or someone like that. Not too exciting but Hana is absolutely delectable.
* Tiuu for Paule Ka - nothing special but she does a good job.

Eds: * Superman by Richard Bush - Looks like Roos clad in baggy early 80s Versace looking clothes - Comme des garcons, Chalayan and Balenciaga...Not my favourite - I don't like the clothes or the model or the photography.
* Tracking the girls by Ellen von Umwerth - Caroline Trentini and Jeisa Chiminazzo as bad little schoolgirls. In virtually every picture they are looking around to see if there is anyone who sees their naughty tricks (such as balencing on tracks and dangerous stuff like that...) Marni, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs girlie clothes are displayed in a sort of 60s fashion. I looove this - it's just so cute.
* A free spirit by Vincent Peters - Glamorous UTM brunette poses in alternately a study or an exotic rain forrest displaying exotic/ethnic looking dresses. Not bad. Kind of Cavalli ads but not as opium chic - too sober if you ask me :)
* Sweet seduction by Jenny Gage and Peter Betterton: B/W shots of Missy Rayder. Pretty but bland.
* Hard times by Terry Tsiolis: UTM blonde in various dark outfits. Could be Lydia Hearst. Good - at least there are two shots that are quite nice but the rest is nothing exciting.
* Vogue beauty - only 3 pix with Heather Marks by Jesse Shadoan. Red hair, pink lipstick. Beautiful and angelic.
* Vogue promotion for Chanel with UTM brunette Gisele lookalike. Very very pretty.

OVERALL: I love the cover, the Heather pix and the glorious Caroline/Jeisa/Umwerth story - the rest is just fillers really, though I'm quite sure the unknown to me brunettes are going to appeal to a broad audience. B+

I got a free subscription to Vitals, the new mens shopping magazine. It was waaaaaaaayyyyyy better than Cargo, and I would love a womens version. The editor is Joe Zee, formerly fashion editor at W.
