What Magazines Have You Bought/Received Recently?

dd_1_b.JPG

I just got breezed through my Feb. Bazaar (with the subscriber cover):

noteworthy ads:
Dior 2 pg (Riley in denim jacket)
Prada 2 pg. (Elise; you can see pics in SS05 Campaigns)
Estee Lauder 2 pg. (Carolyn Murphy-Primitive Instinct)
Armani 2 pg. (Karen Elson)
Gucci 2 pg. (Natasha Poly in beige dress lounging with 2 men)
Vuitton 2 pg. (Uma with MJ-like bag)
Dolce & Gabbana 2 pg. (Ujjwala)
Bottega Veneta 2 pg.
MaxMara 2 pg. (Marija)
Versace 2 pg. (Madonna, licking envelope and on phone)
Michael Kors 2 pg. (Erin sitting, snakeskin dress)
Paul & Joe 2 pg. (looks like Nataliya?)
Revlon 2 pg (Susan Saradon, Julianne Moore)
Jil Sander 2 pg. (Lily Donaldson)
Godiva 1 pg. (Frankie Rayder)
Etro 12 pg. (Natasa V.)
Cavalli 2 pg. (Kate Moss)
Missoni 4 pg. (Daria)

eds:
"The Best New Pieces" by Greg Kadel. Gemma, a beigy-gray background and some very nice clothes: Balenciaga sailor pant & white trench, purple Lanvin skirt suit, olive tonal polka dot YSL blouse & skirt, Prada jacket and shorts suit, Yohji's halter dress over pants. The problem is it's too boring...and it's a waste of a talented model.

"The Hits of the Season" by Peter Lindbergh. Similar to the piece in Jan. US Vogue: group of models, one designer. Louise Pedersen, Michelle Buswell, Iselin, Tiiu, Marina Perez, Alexandra Tomlinson in Proenza Schouler, Hermes, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Chloe. But again, it's too boring for me. The Vogue shoot had different backgrounds, different poses. Here, each shot is the same, on an artist loft backdrop. I also didn't like the major overlap of designers from the above ed; seems like they could have left this out, or shortened it into another ed/article about key collections.

"Spring's Brightest Accessories" by Hiro. Eye-popping bags, shoes, the usual from Hiro

"Teri Hatcher: America's New Domestic Goddess" by Alexi Lumbomirski. Smiling, bubbly Teri in Michael Kors (white gown that Carmen wore), Dolce & Gabbana, and Donna Karan.

"It's All About Love" by Peter Lindbergh. Fashion people and their loves, out and about in Manhattan and Paris. A really lovely ed.
Nicole Trunfio/photographer Justin Smith
Vanessa Beecroft/husband Greg Durkin w/sons
Jake & Mickey Sumner, Sting & Trudie Styler's kids
Stam/photographer Kenneth Cappello
Ujjwala/Maxwell Sterry
Helena Christensen/son Mingus
Shalom/model & photographer Aaron Ward
Alexandra & Theodora Richards
John Mellencamp & Elaine Irwin Mellencamp

"Making Fashion News" by Hugh Stewart. Ann Curry, Soledad O'Brien, and Elizabeth Vargus in gowns and talking fashion.

"Gucci's New Girl" by Solve Sundsbo. Interview with Alessandra Facchinetti with pics of Isabeli in Gucci.

"The New Additions" by Thomas Schenk. Cameron Russell in the pieces to perk up your wardrobe. Shot very similarly to the Gemma ed, with the same results. And the subject matter is almost identical. Another waste of a good model.

also:
- runway to red carpet page, kinda like our "When Stars Wear Runway Looks" thread
- interview with Amber Valletta on her film career
- the best accessories in metallics, coral & turquoise, rope and wood
- the rules of the season with some good runway shots
- closet confidential with Shiva Rose McDermott, Rachel Zoe Rosenweig and Nathalie Marciano
- Buy, Keep, Store
- the fashionable life of Dior jewelry designer Victoire deCastellane
- article on new bags by Rochas and VBH

my take:
I'd give this issue 2 out of 4. The Love ed by Lindberg is very nice, as is the
ed with Gemma (I love the clothes). The Gucci girl piece was ok, but the other edits are a bore. The other articles, features make up for this, but really not enough. All of the fashion advice seemed to blur together (pieces of the season/new additions/hits of the season/rules of the season). I get it already.

After seeing many of the new ads in person, the Missoni/Daria with bleached hair is horrible, Prada is beautiful, as is Armani & Gucci, but the Etro with Natasa is stunning.

I hope that this means next month's issues will have more appealing cover girls. Has anyone heard anything for March yet?

Great Review thanks youuu;)

I must say that I quite enjoyed Bazaar. The Gemma Ward ed was great, as is Isabeli's spread with Gucci. I hated the Lindbergh ed though.

Feb US Vogue with Mrs. Donald Trump. So ashamed of this choice, they have to cover her face. :yuk: :yuk: :yuk:

Ashlee Simpson on Cosmo. Why is this girl still a star?

instyle0205nicolekidman.jpg

Nicole Kidman in Chanel on InStyle. Boring.

OH GOOD GOD. I am NOT buying Vogue this month. :: shivers ::

I can't believe they went with this instead of Hilary Swank. Yes, it was another actress, but at least it was a different actress...

anna vs. glenda

I am curious to receive us vogue monday: I thought bazaar was quite strong inside particularly gemma so I wonder if vogue can match or surpass that...?
we shall see which model vogue casts inside....

recently i have been leaning towards harpers. vogue keeps using the same four girls over and over

this vogue cover is one of the worst they ever had!!
what were they thinking? did they really have to hide her face like that? if they don't like it, they shouldn't use her like this and instead put some else there.....
wrong choice, really WRONG!

i.. i.. i cant even put into words everything that is wrong and hideous about that cover. its just horrible!!!

It sure does look horrible. Waiting towards march issues..

from FWD...guess who's on the March Bazaar cover...

The February issue of Bazaar hasn’t hit newsstands yet, but fashion insiders are already trying to guess March’s cover girl. While no official word is out on the Hearst-owned glossy, one Bazaar staffer has given The Daily a little hint:

“It’s someone in the music industry and we’re really excited about her. Think back to who’s been on past covers — and who hasn’t — and you should be able to figure it out. Oh — and it’s not Lindsay Lohan!"

well thank god it's not Lindsay...their guess were Alicia Keys or Gwen Stefani, both of whom I'm sick of...

right choice NOT to use Lindsay....
but PLEASE not gwen: i hate her!
have they really already exhausted all the good choices??

As for Bazaar's March cover... It's not Mariah Carey, is it? :-D

Gwen Stefani is on the cover of Rollingstone. This attention sl*t just won't leave us alone.

Feb. US Vogue didn't show many new ads (still no Chanel, no Miu Miu). But here are the eds:

*Daria Werbowy photographed by Steven Klein in "Something Gold, Something Blue," as these two colors are popular this season. I think it looks better than Daria's work on average, but not particularly astonishing.

*Steven Meisel's studio shoot of various models including Raquel Zimmermann, Hana, Caroline Trentini, Liya Kebede (who looks beautiful), and one young blonde ingenue I don't recognize. This isn't bad, just boring.

*Hilary Swank photographed by Craig McDean. The hair is prob. too crazy to be on the cover.

*Mrs. Doland Trump has an editorial by Mario Testino. Laughable.

*Isabeli Fontana and accessories by Raymond Meier. I like this ed best; Isabeli looks different.

Feb. US Allure has Mischa Barton on the cover, Linda V in hair ed, and Caroline Winberg in fashion ed (some good pictures).

This is how I'd rate Feb. issues:

Vogue (Mrs. Doland Trump): B-
Bazaar (Teri Hatcher): B+
Elle (Uma Thurman): D (good cover though)
W (Renee Zellweger): C-
InStyle (Nicole Kidman): D
Cosmopolitan (Ashlee Simpson): C-
Glamour (Kelly Ripa): B-
Lucky (Alicia Keys): C
Allure (Mischa Barton): B-
Marie Claire (Jennifer Garner): B
Teen Vogue (Scarlett Johansson & Topher Grace): D

libertyrose: no A-rating this month? the magazines really seem to go downhill.....i hope this trend is not continuing .....
and i have to agree that, for the moment, bazaar remains on top of my list, you can't really put vogue there anymore, after that cover....!

I went on a road trip with friends this weekend and they bought ElleGirl and Glamour, I bought TeenVogue.

I've never looked through Ellegirl before and I actually kind of liked it. It was a lot less teen celebrity driven and a lot more model driven. They went backstage at Anna Aui and actually followed a model (Elyse Taylor) around during fashion week. It was kind of refreshing.

And TeenVogue wasn't bad. Glamour was awful.

bazaar A-/ A

imo bazaar gets an "A or A-" relative to the rest.
bazaar has gemma by kadel; 2 lindbergh stories [incl tiiu, buswell, louise, stam & more] and cameron too.
W also disppointed me despite iselin's pretty look. {klein shooting kirsten owen is very bad}.
havent seen vogue yet, sounds like bazaar is better anyway.

I agree with pretty much all of these, except Vogue and Allure (haven't seen them yet). After going back and looking at the Feb. Bazaar, I'd say it's a solid B/B-; the ed with Gemma isn't bad, it's just boring (as you categorized the Meisel ed in Vogue).

Elle and InStyle were atrocious.

fyi...Some other online site has the March Bazaar cover going to Stefani, shot by Alexi Lumborski (sp?), who also shot this month's cover of Teri Hatcher.

Here are the ads from Feb US Vogue, and my review:

ads:
Marciano 4 pg. foldout (Paris Hilton)
Gucci 2 pg. (Natasha Poly w/ 2 guys, fringed skirt)
Calvin Klein Collection 2 pg. (Natalia)
Dior 2 pg. (Riley in denim jacket)
Revlon 2 pg. (Kate Bosworth)
Vuitton 2 pg. (Uma, same as Bazaar)
Lancome 2 pg. (Drew Barrymore)
Burberry 2 pg. (Kate with dog)
Marc Jacobs 2 pg. (Cindy Sherman)
Armani 4 pg. (Karen Elson)
Bottega Veneta 2 pg. (same as Bazaar)
Michael Kors 3 pg. (Erin sitting and long white dress)
Prada 4 pg. (Diana Dondoe, Elise)
Ralph Lauren Romance 2 pg. (Filippa)
Boss 2 pg. (Julia)
Jil Sander 2 pg. (Lily Donaldson)
Versace 2 pg. (Madonna w/jeans)
MaxMara 4 pg. (Marija)
Dolce & Gabbana 2 pg. (Ujjwala)
Roberto Cavalli 1 pg. (Kate in jeans)
Alberta Ferretti 2 pg. (??)
Blumarine 3 pg. (Shalom)
David Yurman 1 pg. (Kate)
Chloe 1 pg. (Julia, Anja w/python bag)
Pollini 1 pg. (??)
Chanel Eyewear 1 pg. (Erin)
Moschino 1 pg. (Guinevere +2)
Jean Paul Gaultier 1 pg. (Diana Dondoe)
Akris 1 pg. (??)
Donna Karan 1 pg. (Erin)

eds:
"Something Gold, Something Blue" by Steven Klein. What is it with the drab beige backdrops? At least this one is a bit more interesting than Gemma's in Bazaar. Daria is pretty, not beautiful here.

"How to Marry a Billionaire" by Mario Testino. Follow Andre Leon Talley and Melania Knauss to the couture shows to get a wedding dress. Watch her try on Rochas, Balenciaga, Vera Wang and Fred Leighton jewels. Yuk.

"Adding it All Up" by Steven Klein. High designer meets low priced bargains. Hana, Liya, Caroline Trentini (They sure love her these days), Raquel Zimmerman and a new face.

"The New Guard" by Jonathan Becker. The hot new socialites: Jemma Kidd, Tinsley Mortimer, Victoria Traina, Ivanka Trump, etc. Another yawn.

"Fighting Spirit" by Craig McDean. Profile of Hilary Swank. She's sporting some major hair, but wearing a stunning Rochas ballgown and a wonderful Marni balloon dress. Should have been on the cover.

"Dreaming in Color" by Raymond Meier. Isabeli in bright accessories. She looks great, the shots are beautiful too. There's a bonus shot in the Index.

also:
- one page profile of Gavin Rossdale, soon to be seen in "Constantine" with Keanu Reeves
- Life with Andre is about Karl Lagerfeld's recent trip to Japan, Nostalgia is by Sophie Dahl and her year lost in grunge (inspired by a Vogue shot with Nadja Auermann and Kristen McMenamy)
- piece by a woman whose boss at Doubleday was Jackie O.
- there's a nice one page shot of Daria (by Demarchelier) in the Beauty section, and 2 pics of Heather Marks (by Steven Klein) in a hair care article.

Verdict:
If you take out Melania Knauss 14+ page article and cover, this is a pretty good issue. I prefer the other eds to the ones in Bazaar. But you can't, and since the cover lady takes up so much space, it makes the issue as a whole that much more of a disappointment.
