What to wear to someone else's wedding

^Yes, thanks, I thought about that. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any other dark colors that looks nice on me other than black. Khaki, anthracite and dust / sand colors look good on me, but that looks even more depressing than black 
I've thought about going for a bold color like red, teal or purple. But then it would have to be something fun and sexy for me to feel good about myself, which probably isn't very appropriate for a wedding either. Formal occasions suck, lol.

Psylocke... I think you don't have to be too afraid of going for something fun. Is the wedding in Switzerland? I know that people were wearing fun stuff to my wedding (yes, in Switzerland) and it didn't make me feel strange 
On the other hand, some usually very stylish women "dressed up" in very formal attire and in colors they usually never wear (like burgundy... that seems to be a favorite when it comes to formal dressing) and honestly, they didn't look their best. I once bought a very formal burgundy silk blazer for a wedding, too 
So if I were you I'd try to be yourself
I once wore a green dress with a purple silk scarf as a belt and I felt totally myself and very relaxed and many people complimented me on the way I looked. As long as you don't go very sexy (like very short dresses) I'd say go bold and have fun!

The bride's family is rather conservative but my best friend's family is really cool (they're German). I've only ever been to a wedding before once and we didn't have a dress code there at all as it was the couple's wish that everyone would wear something comfortable and cute for the big party and not care about the church part too much. I went with white pants, a black blouse and purple hair 
I actually saw a really cute red Miu Miu dress in a clear out sale that I could totally see myself wearing for the wedding. The only problem is that it's too big and I'm not sure I could get it altered in time for the wedding. But I think I'll give it a shot, otherwise I'll be worrying about what to wear all week and drive myself crazy instead of looking forward to my friends' big day!

I found a dress today that I totally fell in love with and now I don't even care anymore if it's approriate for the wedding or not because I love it so much

I think it should be ok, though? AND it's not all black!

I'm a bit heavier after my daughter and this dress helps shape me and conceal a bit of the pooch she's left me. I do not 'bare arms' at all, so I need a shrug/cover up. I ordered the following today in case I can't find anything but I am sure there are nicer cover ups:

how about a fitted black cashmere cardigan? i'm concerned that something in velvet wouldnt go well with that ruffley dress.
Would cashmere flow well? With the ruffles, I don't know how fitted I can go. The dress is a 14P... so getting too fitted may look bad.
A friend of mine recommended a pashmina... but I don't know if I want to cover up the detail on the neckline...

a pashmina might be a good idea. you might also want to take into consideration that if the wedding is indoors the air conditioning might be on full blast.

I need some suggestions of what to look for. I have a wedding to go to in February in Buffalo, NY. I am anticipating snow. Ugh.
The wedding itself is in the early afternoon and Catholic. The invitation states that the "formal" reception will follow in the evening. My mom thinks that formal means black tie, but according to one of the bridesmaids it's "formal, but not like, tuxedo formal." Whatever that means. The bridesmaids are wearing long gowns and the groomsmen are wearing tuxedos. The reception is being held in some sort of manor house.
Suggestions? I'm at a loss between the anticipated weather and the murky invitation.

are you looking to wear something you already own for the wedding or do you think you'll HAVE to purchase something?
I'm pretty sure I'll have to purchase. I'm doubtful I'll have anything in my closet that would work, although I'm planning to check and see if I can make anything work once I get some suggestions. I've only had to deal with summer or early fall weddings for the past few years, so I have little to no winter formal wear. I have a green satin cocktail dress, but it's not really afternoon church appropriate, and a solid black sheath dress - but I hate to wear solid black. So, shopping will probably have to occur.

^ I would be tempted to do two outfits. You could wear your black dress with a colorful scarf in the afternoon, and for evening ... I would try for something I could wear again during the holidays. For example ... a long black velvet skirt + something like this Lanvin sequin print blouse + a shawl ...

I like the holidays suggestion as well as the idea of packing two outfits, but I'm one of those people who still won't wear black to a wedding. My mother pounded it in to my head that it's just not done. My grandmother would turn over in her grave and/or haunt me that night.
I could always try to find a navy sheath, which I could then also use for work. With dressier accessories, could a navy sheath work for an evening "formal" reception? I could wear it with a jacket and pumps for the wedding and try to jazz it up with different items for the reception. But would a matte sheath be too casual?

I'm totally enamored by this dress
it's so simple and fresh, made of cotton, not flashy at all, which makes it really charming in my eyes.
but i guess that's very personal, cause i just don't like fancy formal dresses in general. for my own wedding i was wearing a sweet short dress with messy hair, casual and laidback.
hopefully i can wear this dress to my best friend's wedding
