Who Are The New Supermodels?

PussyLee said:
lack of public interests hinders a model from becoming a celebrity. Thats why no supermodel as famous as cindy crawford can be found nowadays!
And why do we have a Next Top Model show in each and every country?

I doubt people would be calling out to know what the semi-ugly kids of has-been celebs are doing unless they were confronted with their images on tv/mags.

It is an undeniable truth that Gisele and Kate are the only supes today (Kate's getty score is 1216). But there are more coming - there is a next big thing - and there always will be but model_mom is clearly right when she said that there can be no next big anything if there has to be completely new faces who take most of the lime light every season. I can add to that that the models chosen for major coverage have to be carefully chosen if they are to gain major celeb status - they have to be the ones that:

1) Have general good looks and are extremely photogenic.
2) Are very interesting to the fashion world.

These are two qualities that rarely come together - probably because some people in the fashion world of elitism for the sake of elitism. That is, they really don't want girls who have massive appeal in their ads - despite the fact that these girls may also be inspiring in more ways than one. But I'm not going to blame the fashionistas completely for this because the SI people are becoming too obsessed with mainstream p*rno imagery, which of course is a turn off for most people who value art. Very few girls can be in VS ads and come out looking like anything else than pieces of meat.

Yes, but who says that a model cannot be a celebrity. They can if they want to and if they're given that role. If they are frequently named in editorials and have interesting, real or fake, relationships which are publicized I don't quite see why they couldn't be celebs. If these channels decided to pick up a few girls with interesting styles and lives, they could easily join the list of celebs.

I was hoping that you'd come in this thread .

I like the idea of having a bunch of supermodels .It would be good to see some models other than Kate back on the covers.A celebrity status would ensure that. It would give the girls a name and more powers.

Hilary is just the hottest model on the runway now but the public doesn't know who she is. To become a new supermodel opening and closing major shows is not enough. For example, Sasha P. opens a lot of shows and has an attractive contract with Prada but she is way too edgy to become the new supermodel. We need a 'classic' face, not a Sasha or Gemma. I think Doutzen has the classic face to become the new supermodel, but that doesn't mean she'll be a supermodel. What you need is attention from the media of course, attention which has nothing to do with fashion but for instance with boyfriends etc.
Speaking of Daria, I see her as a potential supermodel. But we shouldn't forget that she disappeared (almost) a year of the runway, and now she's back. It's now just the hype that she's back. I think most people will recognize her face (thanks to the Lancome ads) but they don't know her name.

Getty images hits:

Gisele 1217
Adriana Lima 476
Karolina Kurkova 768
Fernanda Tavarez 0
Julia Stegner 30
Gemma Ward 20
Daria Werbowy 17
Jessica Stam 10
Jeisa Chiminazzo 22
Raquel Zimmermann 21
Erin Wasson 46

wow thats interesting! surprised that Karolina has more hits than Adriana though. Also another reason as to why there may never be a supermodel again is celebrities. They have taken over most of the supermodel making work like soft drink ads, major covers, beauty ads...

Thats what makes Hillary and Sasha different. Hillary and Sasha may both be very hot items on the fashion scene but Hilary does have a more non fashionista friendly face. She could easily do all that attention getting work whereas Sasha can only do high fashion. I believe Daria;s dissapearance was good for her high fashion career coz if she hadnt dissappeared she would be suffering from overexposure but then again she is just too cool to cross over to the commercial world.

anyway, i hope we'll have some new supermodels soon!
i definitely think Karolina and Gisele will become more well-known, just as Julia, Doutzen and Daria.
that list posted by iluvjeisa is interesting indeed! thanks for posting :flower:

It is surprising - but the result still stands with google instead of getty, which is even more surprising considering that google is flooded with semi-p*rn. I really think Karolina came so so close to becoming a true supermodel. She's vivacious, killer bod (one of the best) and captured the interest of fashionistas. Of course, she did have a flaw in her face that may have prevented her from the greatest succes, on the other hand so did Lauren Hutton. Karolina must have done something wrong along the way - don't know what for sure - but I suspect it was the VS thing. She did it just a little bit too early - she should have held on to high fashion for another year or two.

i'm also wondering what happened with fernanda tavarez :( she's so stunning!
about what urban_stylin wrote, i really hope they'll take in future more models than celebrities for product advertisement. i wanna see more models there! by the way the new Chanel campagne with Daria is greeeaaaat

I think it would really help if a few models banded together, a la Christy, Naomi, and Linda. It's always the case it seems that when you see three gorgeous models standing together, the effect blows you away.

I hate the idea however that a model must do VS and all this stuff in order to be a supermodel. That's just the way Gisele defined it, so now everyone thinks the next possible sm has to follow in her footsteps, when really they will have to form their own path. The 'real' supermodels were known for being fashion models; they did other things, but fashion was much more popularized then than it is now. I think we may be coming into a new age of fashion consciousness; I have seen several media stories about bringing fashion to the masses, and a lot more coverage of fashion week than I usually see.

At the same time, though, the problem with fashion now is that it's so ever-changing. It would help if there were more 'eras,' like how Kate Moss ushered in the waif heroin-chic sort of thing and became the poster girl for what was in then. These days fashion is much more rapidly changing and individualized, so that no one model could ever represent everything that fashion is embodying.

So I don't think you can really boil it all down to a 'supermodel' formula; however, one thing I think is important, no offense intended to anyone, is that the model speak English well. In order to become truly famous, a model will have to appeal to the American media.

I don't know why people keep talking about Hilary Rhoda. She is unattractive and far too hard looking. I think she looks like a man.

Good point !
And, though, I don't think models really banding together will bring the supermodel era back, but talking about Christy, Naomi and Linda, I think they wouldn't become as big, if they weren't a "trinity". They probably still would make it somewhere, but, I dare to say, not as far as they indeed made it... The whole supermodel era would've been different if they hadn't been a crowd... They promoted each other better than agents/designers/magazines promoted each one of them.

why did Fernanda Tavarez got an egg?

I always thought she's the most beautiful brazilian out there, her face is really romantic, although her body isn't that strong. I often wondered why her career didn't took off like her contemporaries like Gisele, Adriana and Alessandra, or even Ana Beatriz..........damn that VS contract really helps, huh?

I think that the whole attitude of models, contributes to the success.

today's models like Gisele and the rest (according to their interviews) just see modelling as a job, They come to work and go hme back to their life, which is good for them but bad for us, model hungry fans. LOL

take for example Linda/Naomi/Christy............I guess they had a different attitude.........Linda is very ambitious, hungry and push the envelope in doing her craft. She's really out there, working with people behind the camera to produce the best picture posssible, she's an artist, IMO. Naomi is the DIVA, she's out there to prove she's no.1 and we ate it, which is good. She's very hardworking and she deserved every credits given to her. Christy Turlington, gifted with the greatest genetics, is very professional and hardworking and really out there fashion-wise too.

New crop of models right now are either interested with parties or really not interested in fashion. They just see modelling as a job, not a full-time career.

i dont think any of the younger models have the right personality to be anything major to be honest, other than what they are already

the only way any of them are going to get to any spectacular public level is by dating someone famous while their career is on the up

i don't agree.
every good-working model with great personality can make it without dating any famous star IMO.

It was certainly a good idea of Daria (or her model agency) to disappear, because now she's hot and buzzing again. But I don't think this will last for many seasons. Personally, I liked the Daria-free shows of SS06. Hillary has indeed a more 'normal' face but I think she's pretty normal. I don't see potential in her as a supermodel, but I do think she'll last for a couple of years. Next season, another model will be the new and hottest thing and people will forget about Hillary. The hype is over then.

See I think Hilary has the normalcy which for some could be a welcome change from the aliens and Brazillians-she has a normal face but it carries her well. I think that the fact that she got the Balenciaga solo ad will help add to her value but who knows what could happen in fashion. I hope she stays around for awhile because her look is awesome.

Yeah I agree and I think its ironic how "normal" looking Hilary has this fresh / offbeat look which sets her apart from all the other models.. because most of the models are not "normal" looking.. if that makes sense.

That said I think its still way to early to tell if she has a shot at supermodel status. She needs to stick around a few seasons first.. proving her longevity is her first task.
