Who Are The New Supermodels?

See I think Hilary has the normalcy which for some could be a welcome change from the aliens and Brazillians-she has a normal face but it carries her well. I think that the fact that she got the Balenciaga solo ad will help add to her value but who knows what could happen in fashion. I hope she stays around for awhile because her look is awesome.

ehm....normal, I guess it must be a relative concept. Hilary is very take-charge 80s amazon/androgynous. Hilary is being sold as a conventionally pretty girl even though she is quite masculine looking. She has a strange jaw and isn't very photogenic, even though she has beautiful eyes. She's probably very interesting and fetching in person - but if it doesn't come across in photos it's not going to last.

her success

has more to do with the work of IMG than her looks. She's ok but not really anything special. She was with Click but never went anywhere with them. Switches to IMG she's being sold as the new patricial ideal of beauty and voila she's the next big thing.

i believe its always the agency, IMG has a penchant fro creating top name models who may not even make the most money but end up being known more than their counterparts.

Heres another interesting thing try and google search the models using both names and you ll be surprised how many links you get for each

daria 125 000

karolina 761 000

gemma 699 000

Carmen Kass 834 000

Gisele 2 080 000

Kate 8 760 000

naomi 5 960 000

cindy c 7 210 000

claudia 1 600 000

allesandra 1 480 000

bianca balti 59 200 bianca baoli 1350

maggie rizer 202 000

adriana 2 640 000

heidi 3 370 000

doutzen 49500

oluchi 139 000

eugenia 69 700

liya 633

very interesting indeed!
i wonder why claudia and liya (and some others) have so little pages compared with others.

I seriously doubt there will ever be another "True" supermodel in the tradition of Carol Alt, Angie Everhart, Stephanie Seymour, Linda Evangalista, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Naomi Campbell, Imman, Maud Adams, Paulina Porizkova, Barbara Bach, Cybill Shepard, Tyra Banks, et al.

The industry has changed. Society has changed. The media has changed.

I don't see any indication of anyone today who has the potential.

To even mention Gemma Ward or any of the other alien/oddballs today in the same context as those above is highly insulting to the greats.

Do you think that it is also highly insulting for Verushka, Penelope Tree, Twiggy, Donna Mitchell and Lauren Hutton?

Twiggy and Hutton were a bit different, but not odd. Hutton's only reall issue was the gap in her teeth, but that was marketed like Crawford's mole.

I have no idea who the others are/were.

Lauren Hutton's least problem was that gap - in her case that must have been more of a diversion tactic to keep the gap. Her eyes were terribly closely set and even worse, at different distances from her nose. She was extraordinarily charming but she was severly flawed. Donna Mitchell wasn't a supermodel but she was a pretty big. Penelope Tree was what some people call freaky looking and Verushka had a sometimes odd look too.

Below; Penelope Tree by Snowdon, Donna Mitchell by Bob Richardson and Verushka by Rubartelli. All from the later part of the 60s (I've actually dug those old mags up myself and scanned them. Just adore them  ).

Donna Mitchell still models btw, repped by IMG. Was in the Prada campaign from 2 years back I think. Penelope Tree and Verushka are indeed icons, but I wonder if they achieved that status with the passage of time. Were they known mainly within the fashion biz during their hey days but unknown by regular ppl on the street sort of like Gemma and Daria.

Wow, thanks for the info. Do you have a pic of that campaign? I think Verushka definitely had that status then, actually. It's hard to be absolutely sure if you weren't there at the time, but I've seen articles about her from the 70s referring to her as a supermodel.

Anyway, I don't think we need superdivas ala Naomi and Linda, but I do think it would be nice with Vogue and Bazaar covers featuring models. They just look so much better. The fashon magazine cover is one of the most important forms of expressions of fashion photography and it's unfortunate that they are currently being used as promotional movie posters. At the end of the day, I suppose it's British, Italian and French Vogue which is carrying the torch these days.

I posted a reply here:

i think a BIG difference a model and a supermodel would be that a model adds one zero to the price of the clothes while supermodels add 2!

i'd say that daria has pretty much already achieved super model status, if not, then definitely soon. I think gemma will be really big as well, but in a different way. she's very popular because she has an extremely unique look, and people notice her. i personally think a personality like caroline trentini's or julia stegner's could better handle it than gemma, but i think daria is perfect too

well, i'm repeating myself, but i think that daria may be considered as a supermodel only if you change the meaning of supermodelism.

I bet that if she makes it into the gossip pages, she might be truly considered to be a super (I hope she doesn't, she's not the Page Six type) by the outside world but I guess that to the fashion world she's considered to be a super.
