--my #1 rule is Don't adhere to the rules too religiously. I mean, WHY does your belt HAVE to match your shoes? WHY can't you wear certain colours just because of the date on the calendar? Try to experiment without preconcieved notions.
--when you do experiment, do it without timidity. CONFIDENCE is best accessory: it goes with everything and magically "pulls together" many ensembles.
--I do agree with everyone on the denim issue...one piece at a time. Denim beautifully compliments so many other fabrics, yet really does nothing for more denim. and overalls....ick!
--CONSISTENCY is a good thing...but theres a fine line between that and PREDICTABILITY, which, in matters of style, is a bad thing.
--dont take your wardrobe too seriously...be tongue-in-chic...or be ironic...dress with wit.
--Don't shop for an occasion. ("I need something to wear to my 30th b-day party, the opening night, Bud and Betty's wedding, or whatever...") you'll end up wearing what you bought ONCE.
--very very few items are truly worth their original retail price. avoid paying that price, at all costs. (hhhmmm...no pun intended, but I'm not sure if that really was a pun. anyway....)
--I can't stand empty belt loops. If your trousers have belt loops, wear a belt. even if its a plain navy leather belt on plain navy trousers...it still punctuates your outfit...it says "I am completely dressed"
--and remember: rules are for beginners...amateurs. have faith in your own style. You're better than the rules.
thats my 2 cents.
