i    black and navy together...tres chic!!!..the french and the italians do this very well...

the black & navy thing is interesting - my Mum (& Gran) ALWAYS told me not to mix them (i think its an old-school thing) but I have seen lots of extremely chic french women wearing the two so well together & just looking so demure and moody. comme also do the combination very well - my husband has a nice jumper by comme - one half of each colour.

i'm liking your 'preferences' Softgrey

Never wear anything that; a) Paris Hilton B) Pamela Anderson or c) Britney Spears has worn.

there are so many others to add to that list but I must mention J-Lo!

I usually attach importance to a kind of rationality.
roughly speaking, I don't wear sunglasses at night.
even if it's a interesting attempt.

I try to wear basic clothes in a bit strange way.
and strange clothes in a basic way.

maybe, that black and navy thing is something like dissonance. and so it will receive for and against occasionally.

can black and navy work successfully together?

Katharine Hamnett: all the time
Donna Karan: they look divine together
Calvin Klein: absolutely. any combinations of the two can work
Krizia: perfectly
Jose Levy: of course!
Naoki Takizawa: one of my favorite combinations
Dries Van Noten: why not?
John Richmond: only if it's absolutely spot-on
John Rocha: definitely
Paul Smith: yes
Valentino: always, black pants and navy blazer are very elegant
Gianni Versace: men have discovered colours: it can be pleasant to wear red, green or yellow
Vivienne Westwood: yes

Okay...

The Prince rules:

Nothing boxy and inelegant unless it is done in a measured and calculated way
Only the highest quality leather so it doesn't risk being mistaken for PVC
Nothing that looks casual
Nothing that looks like genuine, actual sportswear-for-playing-actual-sport-in
Nothing too fripperous or girly...balance is required
No bloody Nova Plaid
Suits are good

Don't go overboard with a retro look. If you're wearing a dress that's inspired by the 50's, try to modernize it by pairing it with modern accessories and hair/makeup.

Not a rule, more of a preference.
YES! :woot:

i love the way you put that...

i would say the same goes for me...i will wear one piece with a certain amount of drama...but tone it down with the rest of the outfit...there is a method to the madness... or vice versa...

I've just noticed I wrote 'The Prince rules' instead of 'The Prince's rules'... :innocent: Ooops...

prince, as in the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as prince.

Hum. Well, my rules basically consist attempting to wear what I like. That means no fannypacks, socks with sandals or any of that ultra-stylish stuff... Basically, nothing that I was forced to wear as a kid and hated. Also, I do try very hard to resist wearing fur, which isn't all that difficult for several reasons. And no leather either. Other than that, it's fairly open.

- No platforms
- No fluo colors
- Lots of black and lots and lots of black
- No huge "in your face" logos
- Layering
- No cloths or accessories every "hip" girls out there has
- Flip flops that are ultra thin
- Loads of mascara
- Plain jeans ; no jeans with some weird drawing or patchwork thingy on it
- No peasant tops !!!
- No belly baring for me
- No cheesy baby tees with cheesy words on them like "Babe", "Princess", "Sexy".....
- No "hip hop" clothing for me (Baby Phat..... )
- Stick to classics
- No hoop earrings
- Dare to be different and still look good!

Your post just reminded me of a ton of fashion-don'ts Kimkuu. The truth is that I basically wouldn't even consider wearing thongs, brand names, etc., since it really isn't isn't my style at all. So those pretty much don't affect me...

some more of my do's & don'ts:

my tights tend to match my shoes although i wouldn't wear red of either
i spend as much as possible can on coats/jackets
i spend as little as possible on 'trend' items (zara & topshop are the place)
jeans (i am a label wh*re when it comes to jeans) - only mid-dark blue or black and only skinny ones (i look crap in baggy jeans)
kitten heels or flats with trousers
only converse trainers (even at that very rarely)
i don't wear red & black together (too reminiscent of a parisian tart with my hair colour)
no patterns together (although I have one good combination that works - striped jersey over floral blouse - its nice - honest)
i never show the midriff
prim-ness for me beats sexy-ness
jewellery - ethnic jewellery mainly (indian) and Lola Rose necklaces, earings sometimes but no metallic hoops (too trashy)
no leather clothes - especially not trousers (as my husband says 'the ultimate sign of wh*re-dom', and as my grandfather said 'leather should be worn on the foot and not on the back')
round toed shoes and boots
flat knee high boots with skirts for winter

  can I just say that I really laugh out loud whenever I read of someone wearing :woot: a 'fannypack' because in the UK at least, the term 'fanny' has a very specific meaning (which I hope is different from what it means in the US) - it is rather rude terminology for a girl's 'modesty' lets say...Just to bear in mind if you american girls visit the UK.

do you mean leather thong sandals...or rubber flip flops...

i think you mean thongs....and i can so relate...it's like an addiction for me...but i have tons of flip flops too  :flower:

helena...i've got the best pair of blk leather jeans from daryl k that even your grandfather would approve of...they are just like levis jeans (not tight at all) ...except they happen to be leather...in the winter when it's cold out...there is nothing better to cut down on the wind chill factor...only to be worn casually with my adidas campus snkrs or my blunnies (blundstone workboots from australia) and a huge chunky blk t-nk i got in london years ago...very rock n roll but in a completely androgynous sort of way...i've seen boys wearing exactly the same outfit!!!

i also have a blk lthr twisted slvls top from thimister which is a sculptural work of art...it's completely elegant and tasteful...fitted and very soft lther...i wear it with blk wool jil sander trousers and a high heel boot...usually a small sculptural slvr necklace on a blk cord ....again...rock n roll but exquisitely elegant... a very rare and beautiful thing... :flower:

and i'm a big fan of your mixed patern combo... :flower:

I'd love to have some leather outfits. Maybe some black leather pants (cut like jeans of course) and a red leather jacket and skirt suit combo. Because I'm poor right now I'm avoiding buying items that are a) really expensive and B) requires dry cleaning.

I can't believe you mentioned adidas campus sneakers. There are some being sold at a store within walkings distance from my house that I am refraining myself from buying. I loooooovvvve old school sneakers. I've already owned 2 pairs of adidas gazelles in my lifetime. And the campus style is supposed to be much better.

Softgrey - given that I am convinced you are a woman of much taste I am suitably ashamed at my forthrightness in my opinions on leather clothes! :P I guess within any generalisation there is much scope for exception. The sculptural top sounds lovely.

Do you know what I mean by the leather trouser thing though?? - what i hate is that tight leather trouser, pointy-toed high heel boots with tight top, big hair & Louis vuitton bag look that is just...not very nice.

they aren't that expensive and totally worth the investment...i've had mine for years...they have recently been re-issued...but who knows for how long...i just love the round toe...it's chunky without being dumpy...just so cute and perfect... :P

i forgot...i recently purchased a blk lthr wrap skirt at bergdorf by claudie peirlot...i haven't worn it yet...but i plan to wear it with a s/s ecru/heather grey wide stripe cashmere sweater from j crew...and a 2 1/2 " round toe t-strap shoe...it just reminds me of a french beatnik...think audrey in funny face...i really want to wear a beret with it...but it's just too silly  ...and it will have to be opaque striped tights...NOT FISHNETS...or it really would become french streetwalker...

oh helena...i know EXACTLY what you mean...very :yuk: ...but as a stylist...i take great pleasure in using an item that appears ridiculous or unwearable and finding a way to make it work...it's like a game or a challenge to me...fun fun fun... :P

i think that's why i like this thread so much...it's really interesting to hear what people are thinking as they are putting themselves together...

like what lena said about interesting details...i'm ALL ABOUT the details...special buttons or a cool textured fabric...these are things many people often overlook...but subtletly is key for me...

those women in their tight sexy clothes are SCREAMING look at me...

i'm whispering it... ;) ... :innocent: :ninja:

i'm convinced! loving that. I would wear the beret - you live in New York - if you can't get away with it there... one summer years ago when I was a student,I tramped about Edinburgh with a grey felt beret on - I loved it but I got lots of strange looks.. but I didn't care.
