I was thinking about why the Academy had Michelle Obama present and it's because the GG's had Bill Clinton introduce the film Lincoln and they wanted to top that. Hilary Clinton was a bit busy enjoying her "retirement" so they got the only other women who could be so well received to present.

Why is Michelle's part such a big deal. The Oscars usually do have an American presence, for instance having soldiers included from some military base, and the audience gives a platter of applause in return. It's not that big of a deal and it's a good strategy to have the first lady to boost post-show coverage.
