Asian Faces In High Fashion

A prominent position for Hoyeon at Chanel, definitely getting that campaign and spotlight. Good!

Nice surprise for Estelle and Radhika.

And haha since Liu Wen was a no-show at Chanel, thought she'd be at Prada turned out that wasn't the case, obviously! Not even Fei Fei.

At least we'll see both at the Met! Both been in NYC.

Where did you see/know this? Checked MDC, Instagram and their website and don't see her anywhere.

Yasmin is in the SS18 campaign btw.

Its actually a look book for fall 2018.

It's an editorial/lookbook and not campaign. Still beautiful work.

Its a campaign for spring 2018 Massimo Dutti: Unique women along with Julia Stegner and Amanda Murphy

Looks like Liu Wen, Ming Xi and Fei Fei will show their prowess at the Met Gala.

See if anyone else is there too!

Third time's the charm...

Say hello to summer with not one, but three fantastic and noteworthy covers
with Fei Fei, Soojoo and Fernanda as they flaunt their infallible locks in the beauty
as they choose, on June's issue of Allure lensed by Solve Sundsbo.

Yes! Asian everywhere have and will continue to rock and look incredible
no matter the colour and style, length, its texture or origin - Asian hair don't play, it's strong.
Now that's beautiful hair.

“China has an old saying: ‘Flowers are beautiful because the seeing is free.’ We need more and more girls from different countries on the runway and in magazines and in global campaigns.” - Fei Fei Sun

“Asian and Asian-American heritage is really heavily underrepresented in the industry, and I want to push for inclusion. We’re the fastest-growing minority in the country, but you hardly ever see one of us on the cover of a major American publication. I just want to think about who I am and what I represent and how I can help other people who are like me.” - Soojoo Park

“But change happens because someone is willing to put their name down.” - Fernanda Ly

Personal sentiments from the Editor in Chief, Michelle Lee,
on the importance of Asian inclusion:

It was the year 2000.

George W. Bush defeated Al Gore in the presidential election. Jen and Brad got married. Willow Smith was born. And Lucy Liu appeared on the cover of Allure.

It’s been 18 long years since the first — and almost only — Asian woman appeared on the cover of this magazine. (Olivia Munn, whose mom is of Chinese descent, graced the cover 14 years later.) In 327 issues, over 28 years, there had only been two Asian women on the cover.

We’ve made a real effort to celebrate diversity on all platforms of Allure in the past two years. But, my God, only two covers?

This June Hair Guide is an important one to me for a variety of reasons. My preteen self couldn’t even fathom seeing an Asian face on the cover of a mainstream magazine or leading a TV show or headlining a movie. So being able to feature three game-changing Asian models, especially after a pretty sad track record, has significant meaning to me... and I hope to you, too.

I’ve had lots of speaking engagements in the past year, talking about diversity and what it means in this new era. Initially, the first wave of diversity in media was heralded for letting underrepresented people finally see themselves reflected back in images. And that’s important. But I’ve come to see representation as something even deeper now. We showcase and celebrate different versions of beauty so we can — finally, wonderfully — see one another.

Maybe you don’t personally have kinky, curly hair, or monolid eyes, or stick to halal products. But there’s something we can all learn about each other through the lens of beauty. I’m not a septuagenarian, but I had a lot to take in from our September 2017 cover story with Helen Mirren. Likewise, I hope that Halima Aden’s gorgeous face, framed by a Nike hijab on our July 2017 cover, opened eyes in the best way possible.

I vow to keep it going. In fresh new ways. And let’s not just wait until Lucy Liu’s next movie.

When I first heard Michelle Lee, I was taken by surprise because the Michelle Lee that I know is the casting director whom often doesn't feature Asian models for her shows/campaigns. I thought she finally embraces her own race. But no, this was Michelle Lee the editor. I'm so happy to know that there's an Asian publisher who embraces her Asian heritage and beauty instead of opting to promote self-hate through the use of models of other races. It's so rare and refreshing to see Asian supporting Asians.

I love all three allure covers

What could possibly be better than this?!

WWD Japan released their 500th beauty anniversary issue with a distinct group of women.
Old-school Supermodels, fresh faces, and living legends. Repeat that. And again.

A lovely idea showing women as they are, like what we have here,
embracing it all - whether that's age, life and career, beauty advice or just celebrating being Japanese.
Delightful.

.

And it's quite commendable to highlight Japanese faces on prominent
fashion publications where even homegrown talents are poorly underrepresented.
These models have proven time after time that they are
raw, beautiful, intuitive, smart, edgy, giving and certainly qualified to be known more.
They're worth it.

Here's to more major, but refreshing and memorable moments ~

Fall/Winter 2018 fashion campaigns, so far...

Hoyeon Jung: Chanel (rumour proven)

Hyunji Shin: Dolce & Gabbana (confirmed)

Sohyun Jung: A.P.C. Pre-Fall (released)

Sora Choi: Bottega Veneta Pre-Fall (released)

Yoon Young Bae: Fendi (rumour proven)

Anything else? Something missed?

Personally would not count that as 'campaign worthy' as in actual campaign, campaign.

Obviously I/we don't know sometimes, unless stated otherwise. Seems like there are various outlet/meaning to what is considered campaign these days and how brands choose to deliver that to consumers.

But the LV pre-fall is just like any other brand lookbook collection shown via videos/social media formats and whatnot.

Thus I won't add Heejung's work to the list.

However, how do other members feel about this? How do people view campaign as?

Not sure/known whether she's signed to an agency yet.
Seems like she just started to model legit last year.

And looked like she wasn't discouraged for her height - she persist and finally walked
her first show and doing some decent work (like seriously!).

Lastly, she has a knack for personal styling and clearly enjoys sharing her wardrobe.

Is there a reason why no current Asian models have a Lancome contract?

I wonder who will show up at Dior
Chunjie and Yoon Young are in Paris.

Chu & Ting Chen are in Paris too. Must be for Dior. It's Cruise so not expecting much. Five would be good though.

You could add CoverGirl, Rimmel and Revlon too.

And I guess personally would like to see more Asian working with Guerlain just for the sake of it. Random request. Not holding my breath. Perhaps Natalia wouldn't have it any other way, haha kidding!

While we could extend inclusiveness and diversity to beauty companies too, but realistically it's gotta be logical and the intent from a business and marketing standpoint. Also, are there any concrete sales of xyz company in Asia that calls for Asian representation? (Or it would be progressive having Asian faces in the West as well - why not, there are Asians all over. Why can't it be both way?) Lastly we need household names to draw in customers. Who are these recognisable Asian beauties that has that universal appeal that would make it obvious that they have what it takes, and to be an investment/asset to the overall brand?

But regarding Lancome they are owned by L'Oreal... so I guess in a way it's okay since we have a few models that has contracts, and internatonal actors/celebs from Asia as spokesperson. So that evens out?

Well in China I've seen they used a few actors too. So Lancome has local ambassadors for the designated region and not necessarily internationally and at the level as Penelope/Kate/Lupita.

Anyway Rina scored SS18 Revlon ad.

Turns out Tiana, Devon and Mae has put out campaigns for Lancome. There were a few Asian in the past too.

But yes, no Asian model has had a long-term contract in recent time with the exception of Aoki, like a decade ago. Correct?
