Oh Boys, Boys, Boys...

Well, in preparation for Men's Fashion Week, for the next several days
all subsequent posts will devote to all things male modelling.

Yep. All attention will now be redirected to boys,
just to even things out and honestly this thread is deprived of men, too.

To kickstart we gotta stimulate the situation first.
And that's taking our focus where we last left off - the Top Walkers of FW18:

1. Kohei Takabatake = 43 shows

2. Bomchan Lee = 23 shows

3. Tsubasu Satou = 21 shows

4. Xu Meen = 19 shows

5. Arun Gupta = 18 shows

6. Ye Xiang = 17 shows

7. Na Jaeyoung = 15 shows

8. Jeenu Mahadevan = 14 shows

9. Ni Haoran = 14 shows

10. Wang Chenming = 13 shows

.

How does men's show go like? Is their casting process as predictable
as for women or is it the contrary.

Either way we're looking for a pattern of consistency, and to put it out there,
whether casting directors are aware of the concept of inclusion and choose to be receptive.
Some has. Some needs more work when it calls for it.

See what the following weeks bring ~

When one starts to appear on covers, you know you've reached a greater level of status.

You're the star of the show.

^ Agree. Apparently this collection touched on a personal level w/ his parents being the source of inspiration.

While FW18 & SS19 were calculated, but very apt of a cast and in its transition, may this become the norm - not 12 Asian every show but like several - because these past two collections exemplify that even Asians could be part of the brand's image, like a usual AW's show... so why not.

Obviously the backstory played a huge role for the high quantity of Asian. But my point is that sometimes a model's racial background doesn't have to be a factor. Some instances. Not always.

Very good seeing the first-timers walked again. Was an uplifting, collective cast for a SS19 start. Happy to see Sunghee there like srsly! Outta nowhere.

I wonder why Alex doesn't use Fei Fei anymore. She used to be his muse and appeared regularly on his runway. I find it sad he dumped Anita, Steven Klein and Fei Fei overnight.

i also wonder why Xiao Wen Ju is barely doing shows.

Regarding veteran models & runway:

Interestingly the only top model who hasn't took a break or missed runway at all is Liu Wen. Not one season where she's not walking, whether it's just one show or more. Soojoo too once she became a runway regular (namely Chanel). Fei Fei, Xiao Wen, Tao, Ming, Sui, Shu Pei, Chiharu, Jihye, Sunghee, etc. all stopped/missed at one point due to various/multiple reasons.

Obviously we know runway can't go on forever and the established don't need runway as much. But it's indeed quite the accomplishment for Liu Wen to keep going and now embarking on 22 seasons non-stop with Alexander Wang SS19. She also still holds the world record for Top Asian Walker of all-time with 74 shows FW09 (and 70 shows SS10).

Anyway sometimes I feel there could only be one or two veteran Asian model at a certain time. And runway itself and the people in charge of the process doesn't necessarily recruit or welcome back past faces like we see with white/black models. They get re-cast more than Asian models, that's a fact. There were very special moments like Ai/Givenchy, Ling Tan/AWang, Du Juan/Valli HC, Devon/Jeremy, Hye Park/Dries, Lakshmi/Givenchy, Soyoung/Kenzo...

Fei Fei could probably walk more SS19 shows, who knows. Ming x Balmain is a great team, haven't seen a lot of loyalty for Asian models so not complaining, but she can do more. And all the other top models would be pretty epic if they get the chance to walk again like many white models. C'mon by Asian standards they are recognisable stars and worthy for people wanting to see them again. Jenny or Gwen Lu for Balenciaga???

And about Xiao Wen she recently walked for Jason Wu, Miu Miu, Rodarte, Tom Ford, Anna Sui, etc. which is pretty good over time. More? Yes. Although IMO her look limits her, but her greatest qualities are her personality and ability to morph xyz mood for the show, she's a performer. It'd be so interesting to see her walk Del Moro's shows; and Brokaw cast her for the Prada show in China - so there's potential that she'd walk her shows again. Bring it on.

What were the warning signs?
That is, for the explosion of this great success.

His ascension to top-tier status as one of the most sought after male model right now,
certainly have been rapid by Asian standards, but surely his achievements
may have been necessary and in need of a new page written in male modelling history.
He has what they want, and serendipity and external forces
all played their cards harmoniously, indeed.

Just how he managed to do it all... and if there's any sign of slowing down.
Probably not on the horizon. Whatever he's doing, Kohei has indisputably changed
the narrative for Asian male models by all accounts - runway, covers and campaigns.
Monumental and unseen at this kind of rate. A star just getting brighter.

While he racked up six ads for S/S 2018 alone, here are a few to show off:
