Australia / New Zealand: Fashion Schools

^ University of Technology, Sydney

TBH, I'd say if you can afford it, go overseas.

I didnt know UTS did fashion.. how long are the courses there ? JoeG, what course are u planning on doing ?

I'm going to start a Fashion Illustration short course at TAFE, has anyone done this ?

Also, if when applying for courses, you need to present a portfolio, do you just make some of your own drawings / designs ? What if you have had no experience ..?

i'm studying at RMIT fashion .it's really nice

Err... Bachelor of Design (Fashion) @ RMIT

RMIT = Royal Melbourne Institute of Design

Has anyone done the Fashion courses at TAFE? I am trying to decide between doing Nursing and doing something creative, like Fashion. The course I am contemplating doing is Diploma of Applied Fashion Design & Technology, which used to be called Diploma of Textiles, Clothing and Footwear. I think the name change was to get more attention.

Anyway, what I like about the course is it starts off with the really basic stuff, sewing, constructing patterns etc. While I can sew, I am very out of practice. I'm too late to apply for any of the courses at uni and was thinking this might be a good start.

Here is the basic course outline:

Course outline: This course is hands-on and industry focused. Students explore the dynamics of fashion design while learning pattern making, garment construction, textiles and fabric selection, computerised grading/marker making, and business applications. Students specialise in custom-made garments through to high volume production, and in the marketing/business and merchandising areas of the fashion industry. They undertake a common first year with the opportunity to specialise in second year. The vocational placement component of the course provides industry experience.

The link below has all the course units that I would be doing.

I would be grateful for any advice that anybody has for me. Thanks heaps.

I also suggest tafe for fashion design or Whitehouse Design School. I did attend FBI fashion college a few years ago and found it was not very professional or informative. I have heard their repututaion has diminshed of late. FBI is great for work experience, but that is about it. If you are looking for work experience opportunities on top of study, I suggest calling the designers directly... they will like your initiative  Good Luck

Welcome, bambini85! And thank you for sharing your experience. :flower:

That is ok  I can give everyone alot of help with fashion careers. I am a buyer based in Sydney.
Thank you for the welcome.

i'm doing a couple of classes at a fashion school in nyc. i'm thinking when i get home i'd like to continue with fashion. i'm from brisbane, but i'd much prefer to go to school in melbourne than sydney. not a fan of sydney.

Has anyone got any thoughts on the fashion courses available at Box Hill Tafe (Victoria) ?

Hey guys well im 13 (14 in 2 monthes) and i live in Melbourne and i want to be a designer( i posted some of my stuff in the Aspireing designers topic) and i just got into Macrob(a very good school most ppl come out become lawyers, docs and boring but high earning jobs). Would this give me a advantage in anyway?

Fashion in Australia

Hi !I'm new here . Does anybody know something about fashion design in the universities of Australia ?And how does the fashion career go in Australia ?

hello =) Well I live in Australia, and my sis has a friend whos currently at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) and shes studying Fashion and Design there, she got into RMIT by submitting her portfolio of work she did during her VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education, what you do in year 12) and they accepted her! :D
My sister's friend is extremely dedicated to her course and I think shes fantastic  I think to get into RMIT fashion and design course you have impress the panel of judges quite a bit and do well in your interview. I think the link below will give you a bit of information on how the procedure of selection worked in 2007

I'm no expert in this but I hope that helped!

Sorry, because I know you were asking about Australia, but I thought I'd share, if you're willing to possibly go to New Zealand (which if you're inspired by various nature and climates, I find NZ a very inspirational place to work) I looked and was very interested in Whitecliffe College of Arts And Design (http://www.whitecliffe.ac.nz). I looked at it for graphic design and film, but their fashion design program there sounds very good as well. :flower:

But of course, while they're close together and sometimes grouped together, NZ and AU are two different places, so if you're really set on AU, then I apologize cause my post won't help you any! :P ^_^

sweetpop & Susanna-Cole ,
thank you both for the information very much !
those actually help me a lot !

The Australian institute which producers the highest amount of Designers with measurable success is the Sydney Institute of TAFE - formerly East Sydney TAFE. As mentioned above places like RMIT in Melbourne and SIT have fierce competition from local students with a limited number of students being accepted into the courses. You need a good portfolio, a keen eye and more.

Places which are a little less competitive to get into are Private Institutes such as: The Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne & Sydney and The Melbourne School of Fashion. The fees are very high for these courses but nevertheless the education is still good.

thank you for your information, too, k-a-t-e !
i'm spending time to get to know the universities in Australia which are good for me to study fashion .

UTS is a very good university in general,

but its Design department and the students that have graduated have an excellent reputation.

Many Australian designers (off the top of my head); Tina Kalivas, Akira Isogawa and Michelle Robinson are alumini, and it seems that most graduates end up involved in fashion in some way :flower:
