I've been taking a seminar in textile history and have realized that mixing and merging various patterns, techniques, and motifs in textile arts and goods is nothing new. Editors have called this collection a statement about "globalization" but textiles have always been global. Textile trade has been a major componet of world economy for thousands and years and when you have trade you also have a transfer of ideas.
Almost every pattern or motif, whether it's as tapestry on a wall or the print on a peasant blouse, contain traces of a distant and seperate culture. When the Europeans colonized Java they brought their textile tradition into the region and as a result there is a peculiar kind of Indonesian textiles that reveal this history. Persian rugs have been influenced by egyptian coptic art, hmong indigo skirts have traces of indian motifs, etc
With this collection there is a huge mix of various dyeing, printing, weaving, and handwork that is found throughout the globe and this runway show is not at all the first time they have been brought together, hardly. But kudos to Ghesquire for reminding us what a small world we live in. I'm not convinced this theme has translated into covetable fashion, but it did make for amazing clothes.
