Casting Directors : Who Are They? What Do They Do? Etc...

Scary and disgusting!
Interesting to read models' comments about this, though. Cailin Hill wrote this : "James you are my hero and have been for years, thank you for being you. I remember my first Maida & Ramy casting...seems like things have gotten much worse. At least we got the lights on for the 3 hr CK casting in those days. I vividly remember standing in a beige nightie while maida told me "never ever tell anyone your real age." in front of a line of of 16 year olds (I had told her I was 26)...I just shrugged and said "meh well I'm 22 then." And I was 22 for years after that because of that experience."

I'm glad he decided to start naming these people. That's the only way things can change. I think agents should also boycott these CD and stop sending their girls to these castings, but that's probably unrealistic to ask. Anyways, it will be particularly interesting to watch the line-ups this week...

i was just reading this, and coming to comment. Im so happy he is calling them out by name even though most of us here knew it was them. I just went through the instagram comments and so many top models are commenting in support. it just makes me wonder why their agents werent protecting their girls more?

As someone who does casting, I couldnt imagine treating another human like this. its sick...

I always loved Cailin for that. She was always very outspoken about all the s*** going around.

YES! It was only a matter of time till M&R's inhumane casting and model treatment got called out. Kudos James. This must not be tolerated any longer. For starters, designers need to boycott these two. Making girls sit in a dark stairwell for hours. Vile.

These people are just sadistic in their ways, this had to come out eventually! What I'd like to add to the discussion is that the end goal is that agencies will bring in fewer models. If only 1/4 of the models now in Paris had been brought in by their agencies, there would not have been 150 girls waiting in those stairwells. With fewer models around, the demand for casting directors almost automatically lowers as well. Not every 5'10" beautiful skinny girl belongs on the catwalk... Thoughts?

OMG love love love James for this! he should hire a bodyguard now after that Balenciaga statement tho!

James is my hero, I hope he continues to call out casting directors and houses this is not acceptable behavior today, Its like going backwards. Also I hope he gets more jobs after this, he is a great casting director.

Good for Balenciaga!!
I noticed Antoine Arnault commented on the post, asking Scully to contact him directly for any casting issues in any LVMH houses.

This makes me really happy. Not that it happened, of course, but that it's come out in the open, that people are reacting so positively to this, that everyone is sharing their stories (seriously, check out the full Instagram post... lots of stories to be found in there!)... I hope this is just the beginning of change. Also very glad that Balenciaga decided to drop these people (though it does not excuse their lack of involvement in casting to know this was happening in the first place). Hopefully other brand will follow suit.

By the way, Roland Mouret's been defending these idiots on the coments, too, just so we know who to look out for.

Wow, they're over.

Balenciaga Fires Model Casting Agency After Mistreatment Claims

The French fashion house shut down the controversy immediately.

Balenciaga and Lanvin reacted swiftly today to claims by U.S. casting director James Scully that models were being abused during castings for Paris Fashion Week. Scully made the allegations in an Instagram post, which set off a firestorm on Tuesday that had everyone from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s Antoine Arnault to model Joan Smalls chiming in.

“I was very disturbed to hear from a number of girls this morning that yesterday at the Balenciaga casting Madia & Ramy (serial abusers) held a casting in which they made over 150 girls wait in a stairwell, told them they would have to stay over 3 hours to be seen and not to leave,” said Scully in the lengthy social media posting. “In their usual fashion they shut the door, went to lunch and turned off the lights, to the stairs leaving every girl with only the lights of their phones to see. Not only was this sadistic and cruel it was dangerous and left more than a few of the girls I spoke with traumatized. Most of the girls have asked to have their options for Balenciaga cancelled as well as Hermès and Elie Saab who they also cast for because they refuse to be treated like animals.”
Scully’s post also accused several houses of trying to “sneak in” underage models, and specifically accuses Lanvin of a mandate “that they do not want to be presented with women of color.”
Lanvin spokeswoman Sophie Boilley said: “These allegations are completely false and baseless.” Balenciaga, on the other hand, confirmed there were issues with its casting process and said it immediately took actions to correct them.

“On Sunday, February 26th Balenciaga took notice of issues with the model castings carried out on that day. The house reacted immediately, making radical changes to the casting process, including discontinuing the relationship with the current casting agency. Additionally, Balenciaga sent a written apology to the agencies of the models who were affected by this specific situation, asking them to share it with them. Balenciaga condemns this incident and will continue to be deeply committed to ensure the most respectful working conditions for the models,” the brand said in a statement.

François-Henri Pinault, chairman and chief executive officer of Kering, which owns Balenciaga, has long stated his commitment to promote a socially, ethically, economically and environmentally sustainable business. He is chairman of the Kering Foundation, which was launched in 2009 to combat violence against women.

Kering was recognized as one of the top 25 most diverse and inclusive publicly listed companies globally, according to the Thomson Reuters Diversity & Inclusion Index published in September. It has also been awarded the Gender Equality European & International Standard label.
Arnault, son of luxury titan Bernard Arnault, also chimed into the controversy, posting a message on Scully’s Instagram account: “If you hear of anything like this happening at our houses, please contact me directly.” Arnault, whose companion is model Natalia Vodianova, also tagged the Berluti Instagram handle. Arnault is chief executive officer of Berluti and chairman of Loro Piana.

Others posting messages of support for Scully’s post included Joan Smalls, Kate Young, Helena Christensen, Carolyn Murphy, Julia Stegner, Alana Zimmer, Andrea Lieberman, Hilary Rhoda, George Cortina, Marion Hume and Robert Burke.

I'm honestly stunned at the outcome of this, to be honest, I did not expect to see both Balenciaga and Lanvin drop these two. It's time to move on.

However the comment from Lanvin ...
Lanvin spokeswoman Sophie Boilley said: “These allegations are completely false and baseless.”

Looking back at SS 17, there was only four models of color: Imaan, Liu, Jordan, and Yue. Now it maybe true that they never put out such request for "no black models" but its hard to believe otherwise. It's kind of like they got caught and now have to put on an 'about-face' to act as if not true.

Imaan, Liu and Jourdan certainly aren't going to casting ...

This has all been so interesting! I think it just takes 1 person to speak up honestly; so many models feel powerless against these people but once they've got support. I hope to see more changes happen this way. Just being open and fearless and igniting something.

Who casts at Lanvin? I guess in this case the CD doesn't really matter, the "no women of color" request must come from B. Jarrar ...

^So At Lanvin I've only spotted Joan Smalls. I guess they needed only white women to show their nightwear...Still can't believe the've fired Alber for this.

Since Lanvin denied the claim, they should've at least casted a few more MOC. This is really stupid, I can't.
