Chelsy Davy

I know what you mean but i just think shes trying to be appropriate for her first job and the royal family and maybe doesnt really know how to find a middle ground with that.. she doesnt have a stylist yet does she?

^^since when you have to be dowdy to be appropriate? Was Diana trashy? Was CBK trashy? Is Queen Rania of Jordan trashy? It's really not hard to wear a smart, elegant pant-suit, trenches or well cut skirts. Her clothes don't even fit her.
I actually think, considering the firms she currently work for are very high-flying, that she doesn't look expensive enough: you would think she was the secretary at best, not a possible lawyer. She should invest in a smart, warm Chanel jacket (she can afford it), some Italian leather pumps that don't look made of plastic and some preppy but youthful work wear from Stella, Burberry, Ralf Lauren or any upmarket high-street brand.

The styling at Net-a-porter is pretty rubbish but to give you an idea of what kind of items I am talking about:

Thank you Harumi! This hit the nail right on the head! Excellent post!:flower:

Why would she have a stylist? She is still a commoner and probably doesn't want to spend the money on one which is fine. Anybody can go to Banana Republic or what have you and ask for advice or a saleswoman to put a suitable outfit together for them. Heck I used a personal shopper the other day for my Christmas party coming up because I had no idea what I wanted to wear. She could do any of those options, it would not be hard for her.
I know she can do it, I've seen her wear something chic before, the Audi Polo Challenge comes to mind, she didn't look bad there. Actually the short jacket and boots were quite stylish imo. So it can be done, with out a stylist. :)

Maybe she didn't want to spend money/time/effort etc (whatever you want to call it) on workwear because it's only two weeks of vacation placements before she returns to being a student?

^ That's true. But this is the last year of her degree. If she's going to work next year in London (which she may not), she'll need clothes.

Anyway, I think her main problem is she hasn't figured out what work-appropriate styles suit her shape. And she should put her hair up. Serious professional women never let their hair hang loose like that.

To me it's the exact opposite, having someone pick out your outfits for you while you sip champagne and say yay or nay is not effort and they work very fast.;)
And she will be working soon enough maybe even for this company later when she graduates, so why not make a good impression now? (dress wise)

i agree with you there.. If she becomes part of the royal family i'm sure she will be using a stylist... I dont mind her style either way I'm always interested in what she wears but i think she doesnt know yet herself and she's still finding her own style for work.. Do they have dress regulations at her work? Maybe thats limiting her choices?

what do you mean by "commoner"?

^^ Someone who isn't royalty. It's not a derogatory label just a suitable name for calling someone in a class-conscious society like the UK. It also highlights the fact that it might be a bit much for someone in an officially non-public role to get a stylist for simple work wear :flower:.

oh ok was just wondering what that definition of commoner meant because shes from a very rich family.. No one reallys likes her outfits so I'm just saying she obviously needs a bit of help

Right. This is what I meant by commoner. Someone who is not a royal. :)
Thank you Bahiyya!

Well, in the UK even the titled persons are commoners, aristocrat or no aristocrat. And even if you head the Forbes' richest list if you don't have a hereditary title and/or the proper bloodlines you'll never be considered more than your background. Oddly enough I think Chelsy would be considered middle-class like the Middletons but its rarely brought up in the papers. (It could be because she's from South Africa, dunno.) Whereas the Middletons can't escape it .

I agree that she needs some help. Like the others suggested, though, she could just ask her SA.

You're welcome Aschott :flower:.

^Hmmm I'm not sure about "middle class" her parents are quite wealthy. Definitely wealthier than the Middleton's so I don't know what the name for that in England is but here in America we call it rich or upper class.

I don't think that matters in the UK. A penniless Viscount is still of a higher class than the richest nationwide chain store-owner. And there's still a distinction between leisure venues (like the gentleman's clubs) that one can gain access to with the right price and those that can't be entered for any price unless one has the right background and/or connections. That's partly why there was that titles scandal in England not too long ago where rich folks paid the government bribes for titles and other funny initials...the culture isn't dead yet. (There's still some of that attitude left in New England area in the USA with the WASP culture from what I've heard.)

Chelsey's Mom is a beauty pageant winner so unless her father has some illustrious family tree I'm pretty sure she's not technically upper (in a UK sense). Her rich Commonwealth background helps to blunt that, though, esp. since it fits a familiar (post-) colonial profile ie. landed wealth (speaking as a Caribbean girl myself though obviously poorer ). That's never treated the same as born and bred, salt-of-the earth, coal mining in a -shire stock like the Middletons even though they attended all the right schools and events.

Edit: Yes, if I remember right for both Prince William and his father when potential girlfriends were gossiped about if it wasn't European royalty or British aristocrats the third category was always wealthy Commonwealth girls (always from Zimbabwe for some reason).

^Bahiyya, you are perfectly right in saying money doesn't affect class status in the UK (unless you had it for several generation, then you can bump up a notch), but this classification doesn't apply to Chelsy as she is not British. By African standards, she is as upper-class that one can get. Similarly, no Britsh person would call Caroline Kennedy middle-class, regarless of her lack of aristocratic blood because she is upper-class in the US.
So Chelsy is a commoner, but she is not middle-class.

Ok, thanks Harumi, I thought the fact that she was a foreigner had something to do with it, but I didn't know how to express it :flower:. (Sorry mods! We are dreadfully off-topic .)

^ Even though this has all been OT I have found it very interesting. So thankyou Bahiyya and Harumi :flower:.

Me too! Thanks you guys! I was always wondering about the distinctions and how they translate over to other parts of the world. It's very interesting, and thank you Harumi for clearing this up. I assumed it was like what you said but wasn't sure. Thanks!

What credit crunch, says Prince Harry as he whisks Chelsy off to a £1,000-a-night beach paradise

Times are hard and everyone is cutting back this Christmas. Even the Queen has asked her family to rein in their conspicuous spending.
But for one young couple, it’s very much business as usual.
Prince Harry is taking Chelsy Davy off to a £1,000-a-night beachfront suite on a romantic tropical island.

Beach-bound: Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy are off to Mauritius

The 24-year-old royal plans to ring in the New Year with his girlfriend on the honeymooners’ paradise of Mauritius.
They are booked into a junior suite in one of the island’s most luxurious hotels for eight nights and will wake up each morning to the sound of the crystal-clear Indian Ocean lapping on the sand outside their room.
Harry, who is on a period of leave before he joins the Army Air Corps to train as a helicopter attack pilot, will join the Royal Family for their traditional Christmas at Sandringham.
But the prince will fly out as soon as the festivities are over on Boxing Day.
He will meet up with Miss Davy and her family - parents Charles and Beverly and her brother Shaun, who are spending Christmas in Mozambique - for their luxury holiday.
The recession will seem a long way away as the group, which will also include two of Harry’s Metropolitan Police protection officers, enjoy all that their five-star resort has to offer.
Surrounded by four miles of palm-fringed beach and a turquoise lagoon, the hotel, which the Daily Mail is not naming for security reasons, is situated in one of the most scenic areas of the island.
Decorated in ‘tropical nautical’ style, the junior suites are designed to echo the colours of the sea and sky.

Paradise: Harry and Chelsy will enjoy views like above for eight luxurious days

They boast king-size beds, elegant couches, a writing desk and rattan armchairs.
There is also a private balcony from which guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the glittering ocean.
Guests are offered free waterskiing, windsurfing and kayaking, and the use of their own glass-bottomed boat.
There is even a complimentary ‘aqua gym’ should they feel like doing a little exercise, and access to an 18-hole golf course.
The Mail has also been told that Harry is planning a little deep-sea fishing with Miss Davy’s father and brother.
The party will have their pick of seven top-class restaurants offering everything from freshly caught seafood to fine Mediterranean dining.
Staff are also happy to arrange candlelit dinners on the beach.
A source said: ‘Guests at the resort want for nothing. It really is the height of luxury.’
Zimbabwean-born Miss Davy, 23, is studying for a post-graduate law degree at Leeds University.
Friends say she has not been able to spend as much time as she would like with the prince because of her work.
One added: ‘Harry isn’t able to come up to Leeds because he is so high profile. And Chelsy is really throwing herself into her final year of studies, which means she hasn’t been able to travel down to see him as much as she would like.
‘They are both looking forward to spending some time away together.’
Chelsy yesterday completed her last day of a week-long work placement with legal firm Allen and Overy and is said to be seriously considering joining the company after she graduates next spring.
