Christian Dior S/S 2013 Paris

Great collection! I think Raf is experimenting with different styles. And for the critic casters: I think he is searching for his identify by Dior, so give this what time and there will be a great collection!

I think some people are getting a little too defensive about this collection. Insulting Galliano's work will not change that this collection is not for everyone.

That being said, I don't like this collection but I do see potential and I think it's better than his couture collection already.

no. it's just a jil sander collection with the models holding lady dior bags.
so funny, I think i must go the vintage shop to find the real Dior ... so reductive now days....the shapes, the volumes all gone !:innocent:
Once upon a time ,was nice music and good collection with beautiful clothes .. now days just well tailloring ???just a awful mess or tackyness

To me it seems that Galliano at Dior was about Galliano (and that was grand and magnificent at times -don't get me wrong!), and Simon's Dior is about Dior.
I'm very curious to see where he will take this next. And wow at the last six or seven navy/black tuxedo looks and that tulle dress. gah.

agree. Galliano did design amazing collections, but it was more about him and his theatrical madness than Dior the brand, when watching his shows, it's difficult to even focus on the collections without being distracted by the make up and stage.

That being said, they definitely shouldn't be compared since they are totally different. I am enjoying the direction Raf is leading to, love the simplicity and elegance. I don't understand why a lot of people is expecting a ground breaking collection, it takes time for every designer to get use to and understand another label's DNA.

About 6 months ago Raf Simons stated “when I am married to a house, I will fully embrace its original intention, its original heritage and meaning.”

Well it sounds good to me and in fact to some degree he did adhere to his words but with not much more than a “pretty clothes” result. The Spring 2013 collection has some very beautiful clothes within but if one was looking for a revelation or an explosion of fabulous, and then you were sorely disappointed, as was I to a great degree. Mr. Simons is in in the unenviable state of literally being in the “hard act to follow” position coming on the heels of Galliano and the short stint of Bill Gaytten. To say that the previous 2 designers had a flair for the drama would be an understatement, especially Galliano, but what has ensued after his departure and Mr. Gaytten’s is a bunch of clothes that seem to have some of the DNA of the house/brand but without any fanfare, interpretation or drama at all … that is if you don’t count the media hype.

This is a difficult review for me as I rail against the “unwearability” of so many pieces that appear on runways and yet here we were presented with very wearable clothes but not much more. There were no AHA moments here nor were there any moments of wild abandon and instead we got some pretty clothes, some exquisite tailoring, a little New Look, some trapeze and some strange embroideries. The lengths were all over the place from barely legal to ankle and the silhouette was close to the body for tailored and looser for sure in dresses except for the New look pieces.

The opening sequence of jacket homage was indeed impeccably finished but there was no great news there and then there was the proliferation of “cage like” dresses and various interpretations of the A Line or trapeze shapes. There were a few brightly colored pieces which looked beautiful and it is unfortunate that they were not expanded upon as was the case with one standout strapless navy/black dress with tulle skirt and high low hem teamed with a mirror image heat shaped bodice. Even the tailored and more severe pieces might have cast a different tone on the collection had there been some color added. The metallic fabric used in the lineup seemed oddly cheap and ill-suited as a partner to any other fabrics

It is possible that this is all part of process of making oneself at home at Dior. Though I was not a consistent fan of Galliano, I was always a fan of the house dating back to Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre and the namesake. So, maybe I do miss the spectacle and the unbridled excess that had come before Mr. Simons but that does not negate the ennui of this collection from a legendary brand that holds far more promise and finesse than what was seen today.

This may not be the most heavyweight review, but part of it best represents my point of view.

Anyway, for the last couple of dresses by Raf for CD, basically everyone had done it when they were young:
Wear a black T-shirt and wrap the curtain around their waist.
(And I disagree with what some people are saying about Raf's tailoring, basically there's not much tailoring in these clothes.
If we take a look at the last couple of dresses, the pattern for the top could have been taken from Gaytten's collection, and the bottom is just...
Anyway I am speaking from the point of someone who started learning about the tailoring of clothes since the age of 12, and now I am 23.)

^ So we're supposed to take your word on tailoring as opposed to Raf Simons? Sorry. I don't get the authoritative tone. I understand the sentiments of other people here who didn't like the collection and some of them even gave valid opinions to ponder on. But saying that you learned tailoring at 12 and now you're 23 is just a bit smug and offers nothing to the discussion.

With "real Dior" I suppose you mean from Monsieur Dior himself? Because Galliano was really NOT Dior.

I quite like the collection.

This thread and the views expressed are IMO far more predictable than the collection. That is already getting very old

yes, this new time
back to john's dior? no thanks
old dior is so boring
RAF SIMONS , see you next time
now is you time

Very chic and clean. I hate Raf's HC collection but this RTW is exceptionally good. I love it.

I don't think it's smug, it's just a representation of where I am coming from.

Honestly, as far as a discussion goes about the tailoring goes, technically it doesn't really matter what Raf's skills are, or aren't, as he's working with one of the best workrooms and technicians in the world to model his designs 3-dimensionally. It is not so much about his abilities but what he asks them to do with theirs.

The first looks made me think he was going to take the 'Classic Dior' approach but as the show steadily unfolded I found myself realizing I was watching a Raf Simons show. This screamed of Raf- everything from the materials and silhouettes down to the soundtrack.

This is the same stuff he was doing in Milan... and that's not exactly a good thing.

he haven`t said anything new... the only part of the collection i like are tuxedos, however, these coloriful scarfs tied up on the back (which i like) was at givenchy last fall, these shoes were at Louis Vuitton in spring 2012 and these large bracelets at givenchy several seasons ago...and all collection seems so disjoined i don`t see any compiling theme and i don`t see Christian Dior here. i saw it when Gianfranco Ferre was in head of creativity and it was the last time. this is too poor for dior, maybe only tuxedos, plain black pumps and bags (pumps and bags aren`t Raf affair,i`m quite sure) are something about CD vibe, however even here, too much black 4 dior.

He actually played one song of Jil Sander Spring Summer 2007 for this Dior show, the last one.
