Costume Institute Gala 2008 "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy"

kimora looked terrible. omg just terrible. terrible. terrible. terrible. terrible.

I also like Bos's dress. It looks amazing but my fav by far is Christina Ricci. The more you look at the dress, the cooler it is. Yes it has this sort of obvious shout out to wonder woman but she also has this netting overtop, very on trend for this spring/summer a la Jil Sander, etc. And I love the unevenness of this netting over the bust area, it creates a really cool effect. I've no idea if it was on purpose or not but I like it none the less. So while her dress is obvious tribute to wonder woman, and fits in with the theme, I don't think if you saw it at another event it would look weird or out of place

^completely agree. i'm still amazed by that dress. it saved the night.
i also think both kates look really good (yes i start repeating myself since there isn't anything more interesting to comment-- where are natasha poly, sasha, natalia...?). the more i look at kate bosworth the more i like her look, i just wish kate moss was wearing something edgier... stam's dress is beautiful too, i love her shoes. and looking at scarlett j. i wonder where are all those big dolce & gabbana dresses we saw on the runway...

Anna Wintour - looks like a fossil  but i didnt expect her to be so wild, she looks a little giddy I like it haha.

Mischa Barton - look...eughhh :yuk: WORST I SAW

Bee - looks very disney :ninja::unsure:

J-lo - ugly and frumpy, like an old bed sheet

Christina Ricci - so cute and make her body looks amazing

Lake Bell - cool in balmain(?) but is that a red carpet outfit?

Liv - looks like a big ugly slug

Thandie Newton - cute and sexiest yet

Stam - not red carpet enough

victoria beckham - fake orange skin and white dress is a disaster

Scarlett Johansson - is she playing the role of a wild west hooker? I don't see red carpet or superhero there, just trampy.

Katie Holmes - ugly! very prom, and the blue shoes are awful. Her skin isn't that colour naturally!?!? Radioactive woman?

Olsen Twins - I almost screamed when I thought the child of frankenstein had appeared. I don't know which is which, but the freak with the fried hair and gold dress looks like the other one's grandmother. Both boring dresses.

Beyonce - oh please put some thought into your choices, and you look like a barbie.

Janet jackson - nothing special, looks unfinished.

Mary J Blige - oh that's the cheapest looking dress tonight.

Jennifer Connoly - Maybe the best i've seen so far, so chic and superhero. GREAT! And props for not being ashamed of your skin colour LOL.

Kimora Lee Simmons - Kimora Lee Simmons :rolleyes:

Iman - so pinched looking, not beautiful really.

Rachel Bilson - Did Liv Tyler just give birth to a baby slug? WTFUGLY?

Kate Bosworth - Very pretty, but maybe not a real evening dress, or formal enough.

Sarah Michelle Gellar - This isn't buffy, nobody has died.

Tilda Swinton - Very boring, the orange star looks pathetic. She looks like a big lace box. Where did you find your shoes? From some leprechaun?

I'm just wondering if any of the guests were aware or informed about this year's theme. Why bother with one next year ?

The ones that I like and who actually played accordingly to the rules/theme :

Naomi Watts, Christina Ricci, Kate Bosworth.

I'm still LOLing at Kimora's outfit.

Vic Beckham looks like Thatcher's niece.

BEST
Naomi Watts - very glam, old Hollywood, old Comic-book-era.

Christina Ricci - love the wonderwoman theme. The pale pink tulle is also lovely.

Bee Shaffer - adore the volume

Julia Roberts - quite regal. Reminds me of Nicole Kidman's sequined Gucci at the Goddess Met; except Kidman's Gucci owned her Armani.

WORST
Kimora Lee Simmons - what in the name of earth did she find that awful dress?

Olsen Twins - I don't get why they're considered stylish. Look like a couple of old granny's.

Mischa Barton - what is that?

Rachel Bilson - more appropriate for a nunnery. The dress totally smothers her.

Anna Wintour - why is this woman top fashion editor if she can't dress properly?

Victoria Beckham - tacky, hoochie, ****** mess - as usual.

Sarah Silverman - this is the Met. Not some luncheon.

what a disappointment!! i thought that more people would adhere to the theme --if only because they feared the wrath of anna. i often believe that most don't understand the point of this event. it's to SHOW OFF: you are suppose to be crazy. i absolutely LOVED christina ricci's dress (completely agree with Meg's post above)

didn't we hear non-stop about DVF saying that she was crazy about the theme? i'm sorry, but that golden potatoe sack that MK has basically worn to every event in the past 3 years is not innovative, nor is it "superhero." i definitely expeceted more from DVF.

and as much as i wanted to hate everything about katie holmes, she kind of nailed it. the make-up was a bit drastic, but at least she didn't look like she puked in trash can moments before the red carpet (a la 80% of the young starlets).

end rant ^_^ ...for now.

My favorites so far are Jennifer Connelly and Kate Bosworth.

Marni41: agreed on all counts! except i think katie ALMOST got it. everything about her outfit is good and fitted the theme (the hair, the make-up, the dress, the shoes, the COLOURS!), but altogether, it doesn't quite work.

The A Team

A as in Armani. A as in Anna. A as in almost every A-list star you can imagine from George Clooney and Julia Roberts to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, David and Victoria Beckham, Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Connelly. They all stormed the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute Gala for the opening of the exhibition "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy."

As guests walked through the Metropolitan Museum's lobby and saw the huge statues of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, they each pondered which one was them. Christina Ricci was wishing she had a superpower herself. "I would want to read minds. It would be so fun." Meanwhile, Tom Brady, referring to girlfriend Gisele Bündchen, said, "She's telepathic. She reads my mind — it's a problem." Other powers guests were wishing for ranged from invisibility to flying to creating world peace, and oddly enough, being Peter Pan. Some partygoers were just happy to be themselves. When asked which superheroes they looked up to, both Donatella Versace and Karl Lagerfeld replied "Myself." Marc Jacobs even went so far as to don Superman underwear. But Amanda Peet said, "I would make all of my friends and myself have thinner thighs."

i like

Christina Ricci

Naomi Watts

Tilda Swinton

Julia Roberts

Jennifer Connoly

The only ones I like are Kate Bosworth, Katie Holmes, Emmy Rossum and Camilla Belle.

Camilla is best dressed imo.

This was the most pathetic CIG ever.
