Costume Institute Gala 2008 "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy"

did all of you honostly think you would see grown ups wearing Superhero creations? Did you espect to see New York socialites wearing them? The theme this year was terrible. Like someone mentioned why couldn't it be something more glam or art driven since it is the Met. If everyone were to stroll down the red carpet wearing Wonderwoman, Ironman, superman inspired type clothing it wouldn't look like the Met Gala but a Halloween party in the village (a section of New York). I expect next year that the theme will be very glam. I understand the deisre for this event to be theatrical but I would hope theatrical in a COUTURE sense of the word with opulent fabrics, ornamentation or cutting edge looks. I too am dissapointed but not too much. Once I read what the theme was this years I was like...oh well...I didn't get my hopes up. Oh and Anna Wintour, please never invite half these celebrities ever again. Why in the world are they even there? Many of them probably don't even know. It's just a photo op for them. All that being said, it was still better than the Oscars.

OK, now I have vomitted through the pics

I am disappointed,of course, because most of the dresses were boring and safe. I think Hollywood should fire their stylists. Although there might be more mistakes, but at least it won't be as boring as it is now.

My fave dresses were
Tilda Swinton - beautiful texture... plus the brooch (?) and shoes really complimented the colour
Mary-Kate -although eveybody hates her dress, I really like it, I'm not talking about her hair, for that, I do not have any words for. I found Ashley's dress really boring, she has worn a similar cut-out dress, though white, last year at some other gala(?)
Katie Holmes - She really nailed the theme without going too far, though mak-up was really bad, but dress was impeccable.
Michelle Trachtenberg - I'm not a big fan of her, but I kind of liked her outfit, though I am not sure if it suitable for this gala,it seemed more premiere'ish
Kate Bosworth - I really like that she went for colours, yet it had a good shape
Rachel Bilson - although at first I didn't like it, in other pics I saw the material and texture and it really suits the theme

I'm actually happy that Anna Wintour went for something more daring. If she had worn something really safe, then the night would not have had any meaning. For God's sake it is supposed to be superheroes! How many superheroes dress like cinderellas, greek goddesses etc You don't have to come in a wonderwoman or catwoman suit, but you could wear some vintage Galliano, Mugler etc

And God ( or Anna Wintour) I am thankful that Lindsay Lohan nor Miley Cyrus were invited! Amen

MK's dress isn't so bad, it's just the overall way she looks...even Ash looks kind of washed out. All the younger girls seem a little used up tonight, it's like what the hell happened?! Did they party all last night into this morning and drink Jack Daniels all afternoon while chainsmoking...I mean seriously...

Yes, it's that good. They're among the best at this gala from what I've seen.

yeah but every year they invite more celebs non? I disagree with the above poster who questioned if people would dress up. That's the point. That has always been the point and it has been the one event of fashion calendar where yes, people get costume-y with their outfits. it's the Met COSTUME gala. If people just want to wear couture, go to the Oscars or Cannes. I understand not everyone has the cajones to pull off costumes but even working in little elements is supposed to be the idea. Like Donatella, who had a great dress, it had a fab silver belt and a bit of a cape like element at the back. It was perfect for the event.

Overall a major disappointment, but standouts were Kate Mara (best she's ever looked, IMO), Christina Ricci (wonderfully superhero-esque), Lake Bell (I am in love with this Balmain), and Kate Bosworth (my fave superhero accessory are her shoes). Gisele looked so hot it should be illegal, and KK looked sleek in all-silver. Fines should be issued to Kimora, Thandie Newton, Naomi Watts (she could do SO much better), and Amanda Peet (ditto), and Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham should no longer be allowed to associate with one another. I am really surprised that none of my regular favorites, especially Ashley Olsen and Diane Kruger, really wowed me at this event. :(

Hopefully some of the models will wow us when style.com put there pictures up.
However i think Christina Ricci and Kate Moss both looked gorgeous

As far as superheroes go: Karolina Kurkova did a good job looking superhuman. Her and her sick sick sick body.

Breath of fresh air: Sofia Coppola. The dress is so elegant compared to most of the stuff here.

Emmy Rossum looks lovely - her body is akin to Vivien Leigh - but any similarity to such creatures ends at Emmy's dead boring eyes. That said, the outfit is perfect for her.

Christina Ricci
: I don't know what it is about her. It's daring and somehow, miraculously, she pulls it off. She looks the most interesting here tonight...

MK and Ashley
: They complement each other really well here - one little grungy, kneeling, seemingly nodding around in the most unbecoming decolletage known to man on a short cute little figure such as hers....she looks like one of the 20s movie heroines fresh out of her coffin. And then Ashley with her alert stature and sexy (baby) Sharon Stone like demeanor. I mean - they're the closest to a human s******** I've seen in some time

Christy Turlington - predictably gorgeous....want more

Worst so far - Gisele - I guess her superpower is to bend her back 90 degrees and teleport us all right back to 2000.

Rachel Bilson is way too short for the dress she's wearing.

The Olsens are attending the MET gala- you'd think one of them at least would have bothered to wash their hair! A lot of the 'safe' outfits annoy me because if you are invited to this event, you've got a license to go all out and dress completely over-the-top and daring, and so many people completely waste the opportunity
