Donna Karan Defends Friend Harvey Weinstein, Suggests Women May Be Asking for It By the Way They Dress

While many Hollywood figures have spoken out against Harvey Weinstein, Donna Karan is defending the movie mogul amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

When asked to address the allegations leveled against Weinstein, 65, according to the Daily Mail, the designer, 69, said women may be asking for it.

You look at everything all over the world today and how women are dressing and what they are asking by just presenting themselves the way they do. What are they asking for? Trouble, Karan said at the CineFashion Film Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Late Monday, the designer said in a statement to PEOPLE that her comments had been taken out of context and she was truly sorry to anyone she offended.

Initially during the red carpet interview with the Daily Mail, the designer talked about injustice women faced around the world before defending her movie mogul friend.

I think we have to look at ourselves. Obviously, the treatment of women all over the world is something that has always had to be identified, she told the reporter. Certainly in the country of Haiti where I work, in Africa, in the developing world, it's been a hard time for women.

To see it here in our own country is very difficult, but I also think how do we display ourselves? How do we present ourselves as women? What are we asking? Are we asking for it by presenting all the sensuality and all the sexuality?

And what are we throwing out to our children today about how to dance and how to perform and what to wear? How much should they show?

Karan, who is friends with Weinstein's wife and Marchesa co-founder Georgina Chapman, also said, Harvey has done some amazing things, adding Weinstein and Chapman are wonderful people.

When asked if Weinstein was busted following The New York Time expose, Karan reportedly responded, I don't think it's only Harvey Weinstein.

With her comments sparking outrage on Monday night, the DKNY later spoke out saying she did not mean to offend.

Last night, I was honored at the Cinemoi Fashion Film Awards in Hollywood and while answering a question on the red carpet I made a statement that unfortunately is not representative of how I feel or what I believe, she said in a statement. I have spent my life championing women. My life has been dedicated to dressing and addressing the needs of women, empowering them and promoting equal rights.

My statements were taken out of context and do not represent how I feel about the current situation concerning Harvey Weinstein. I believe that sexual harassment is NOT acceptable and this is an issue that MUST be addressed once and for all regardless of the individual.

I am truly sorry to anyone that I offended and everyone that has ever been a victim.

One of those who was offended by her comments was Rose McGowan, who reportedly reached a settlement with Weinstein after an alleged inappropriate incident.

McGowan who previously branded Weinstein a monster was shocked at Karans comments.

Donna Karan you are a DEPLORABLE Aiding and abetting is a moral crime. You are scum in a fancy dress, McGowan tweeted.

While celebrity chef and CNN star Anthony Bourdain also came out against Karan's comments.

To @dkny How many seventeen year olds have you dressed like they are, in your words, asking for it? Bourdain also shared, along with a DKNY ad.

The Weinstein scandal comes after the NYT reported Thursday that eight women, including actress Ashley Judd, came forward to accuse the film mogul of sexual misconduct. Following the allegations, the Oscar-winning film producer was removed from his powerhouse film studio The Weinstein Company.

I appreciate the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I'm trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go, Weinstein said, adding that he was working with therapists and planned to take time off to deal with this issue head-on.

According to the NYT, Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, including McGowan. In their claims, they allege that Weinstein behaved inappropriately during work meetings.

Well, it seems we've just found the female counterpart to Stefano Gabbana. What's more troubling for me is that she's doing goodwill work in Haiti while spewing this crap. How many girls is she conditioning with these outdated ideas of hers?

I just find it incredible how people feel the pressure to apologize and say their words were "taken out of context" right after saying something controversial. You clearly meant that, or you wouldn't have elaborated so much. So at least own up to it Donna.

Well, thankfully she's already out of the industry. That's just disgusting.

A woman who built her entire brand identity on the premise of "empowering" women, spewing such toxic garbage. Color me surprised.

Well....regardless of how bad D&G's designs are now...I have to admit @diet_prada seems to be getting too big for their britches. What was once a fairly sincere and funny Instagram account now feels very sleazy and mean spirited, in my opinion...and I've felt that way even before they got invited to Prada and Miu Miu and took over Gucci's Instagram on show day.

completely agree, i read their responses to each other and it seems very immature from both parts. The captions are also very combative as well, as if diet_prada is egging on their followers to attack those brands.

You know Anthony bourdain has a point, she's probably put scantily clad young girls on her runway before and designed revealing clothes to sell for the masses.
I don't know if her statement was directly aimed at weinstein's victims since what they wore was never talked about (they were pretty girls, and being pretty is certainly not asking for it), she does seem to be trying to be an apologist for her friend (it's hard finding out your friend is a sleazy scumbag...but she has probably known for awhile and has been rationalizing it some way). She says weinstein isn't the only one in Hollywood doing this, which is probably true, but that doesn't make it ok.
Also, what ever happened to self control? Like on one side they criticize prudish cultures because a man might be turned on seeing a girl's flowing hair but then those same critics can't handle low cleavage. They're not asking for it by showing their body, and it doesn't suddenly make you powerless to your carnal urges to see that...if you see a toilet you don't suddenly pee your pants...it's called self control *end of weird rant*

The video of Karan is totally weird... She seems really out of it, swaying back and forth and her creepy smiling https://twitter.com/WiredSources/status/917612032995799041

(Should there be a Weinstein thread for this discussion?)

I'm both shocked, amused, and disgusted by that clip. The creepy smiling and ridiculous hair and makeup only makes it worse.

Poor G-III Apparel, lol. They bought DKNY against everyone else's better judgement and thing looked up last month as they saw a spike in shares. Guess all of that is history now unless they publicly distance themselves from this lunatic.

Wow, so disappointed in Donna!! No context in the world can make that OK. I'm sure I wouldn't have picked her out of a lineup to have said these idiotic things.

So Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow stepped forward over the past few hours, and Asia confirmed the claims. NY Times are not certainly not playing around....

What the hell is wrong with Donna Karan?

Ugh, I wish I didn't like her clothes now.

lol I wonder if Harvey threatened the NY Times, prior to threatening to sue for publishing this story, because they are not f*cking around. I say this to people all the time, no matter how big you think you are, never, ever piss off an editor

I grew up with an almost opposite perception of Donna, mostly guided by the codes of her label and aesthetic (good marketing I guess).. I don't think I ever took the time to analyze the way she carried herself and what she said. I searched for old interviews to see if maybe age just got to her but she sounds like she could've said that then, too. :rolleye:

What's more revolting is her passive-aggressiveness.. the grin and the second of silence like 'think about it'. I have dealt and still deal with so many women of her generation that had that ruthless competitiveness so engrained and obviously had such a hard time breaking into the 'bro culture' of a world of business ran by men that adopting and embracing the behavior of a typical male bully, the same ideals, advocating for the brotherhood and going after anyone that dares to question them led them to be enforcers of that dynamic of making women in "inferior" positions second guess themselves in the best cases, destroy their careers in the worst, and always be suspicious of them, first and last you question them, then maybe you acknowledge the male side does have 'some quirks'. Disgusting. And if he's not the only one.. name the others maybe and do society a favor?.

Does anyone else see parallelisms between Weinstein and Georgina Chapman and Donald and Melania? I mean, they even look alike; it's kind of creepy.
