Dressing For Cold Weather & Winter...

I'm so crap at this,I usually sacrifice warmth to look nice.
But the one thing I always wear is a scarf,I have a lovely long pea green one.

I got this hat in Milan (where i froze my head off..) It's cute with to pompoms in strings from the ear-things..BUT..I hate the color, I want a black one! :mohawk:

Does anyone know where I may find it?

^ I love those, I try to find one every winter, but I've never found a perfect one. I should just make one, but I don't really have the time...

It should be really easy to make one...I have to find some nice little piece of rabbitskin in the sunday-market...

wow.. this thread is incredibly helpful... considering i just moved from Los Angeles to Boston for the next several academic years... Do you guys think I can survive without a down jacket??? theyre not really my style.... nooo north face.... does anyone know of any alternatives?? Im not a big fan of this chill weather....Im already planning to do my clinical rotations somewhere WARM....

emi--I scored a charcoal shearling hat like yours last year for 9.99.....marked down from 150 and I expensed it to the ad campaign I was shopping for :innocent: It's sooooo warm it makes my ears sweat.....I  it......and it looks like I'm going to have to bust it out over the next few days

marcj are you going to be a doctor when you grow up ? . . . :o . .
down jackts are not necessary . . i've survived w/out one
& i live in a fairly cold place + have super bad circulation {always cold hands + feet}
just wear lots of layers + a 100% WOOL coat . . .
always works for me !

* chris :shock:
how the hell was it marked down to 9.99 !
& why does tht never happen to me . . .

haha yeah... Im pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.... I want to be an Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacist and Research scientist who wears really nice clothes!!!

yeah I have bad circulation too... my arms and hands turn weird orange and purple colors in the cold.... I'll def. take your advice.... I have a great Miu Miu tweed trench coat!

Hmm I guess I'd say wear layers too! It can get REALLY cold here in the winter (-45°C if its really really cold and with the windchill factor... I think we even reached -50°C with that factor once.. COLD I TELL YOU :ninja:) so your best bet is to wear layers of warm clothes. Also, quality boots that will keep your feet warm. And obviously, mittens, scarf and a hat.

Like I said before in a similar thread, it gets cold where I live: down to about -15° F/-25° C (sometimes even colder). A good wool coat with a warm sweater underneath is enough if you only walk to and from the subway, sort of, but if you're going to spend a lot of time outside you need to be practical and comfortable first...

yes tott !
there's cold & then there's cold . . .
in tht case fashion can go screw itself . .
i'm talking abt -6/7c . . . not -10+c  !

copenhagen gets cold but i have managed without a down jacket. keeping your head warm is really important, although i hate hat-hair. Sometimes I just wear fur ear-muffs.

Also, I love shearling/sheepskin lined boots. But not Uggs - I have found cool vintage sheepskin boots on ebay instead. Sheepskin mittens are also wicked. Unlined leather just doesn't do it.

One thing I hate, but I do when its really cold, is tights under jeans. It just feels . . . wrong.

it's FREEZING here and apparently we're in for a shockingly cold winter...I'm afraid I've fallen into a 'cold slump'. I'm incredibly prone to the cold and once I get a chill I can't get warm, so I've been desperate to keep warm to the point that lately I've just been gratuitously piling on layers without paying much attention to how good it looks. today I did make an effort to get out of the slump, but it really is so hard and I still wasn't warm enough. I keep feeling this need to shop and buy more things to layer with, but even after living in this climate for 3 1/2 years, I still don't feel like I've got the knack of dressing for it. :ninja:

I wear my summer clothes with big coats n vests...n dresses with tights n boots...thats it..i freeze to death but i cant wear sweaters..it itches me..i wore skinny jeans today and some loubitan pumps n my feet FROZE! but i just cant wear heavy stuff...just cant..lol..

I'm so glad summer is nearly here!!

In winter to uni I usually wear jeans, sweaters, anything knitted and flats to protect my poor feet. I love wearing fitted long sleeved tops and tights or stockings under vintage dress although, my mum says I look like a crazy woman :D.

If it gets really, really cold I'll throw my trusty trench on top but luckily it doesn't get as cold here as it does in Europe otherwise I'd be a blueberry!!

oh, yes, it's all coming back to me about dressing for cold weather.

shearling is lovely. i have a pair of shearling mittens. i can wear that and throw snowballs and still be warm!

keeping your trunk warm is essential, as my sister told me. i like thermals or silk underwear. i layer that under everything that i wear.

knee high socks. scarf. and always, a hat. and a wool coat that goes to the knees.

i can't look all feminine in winter & don't understand how some gals can get away with thin blouses/wee cardigan/blazer (& stilettos when there's 6inches-1foot of snow)! Today is -17C w/ the wind + some accumulated snow & it's just the start o' winter.

For me, wool is a must!

Investing in a good WOOL ankle length coat with a hoodie that has a fur-edge is essential to keep head warm & snow/ice off your face. Hats don't cut it for me. My favourite such wool coat is getting threadbare & i couldn't find an exact replacement this year, so i bought a mid-calf length down/feather coat with said hoodie - which does keep me warm, but i much prefer my fab wool coat. Seems like down/feather is good until we get snow/rain/ice, then somehow the damp comes in & i get cold. :(

Other than that, i absolutely must:
- wear a long-sleeve undershirt (when colder i wear a thin turtleneck)
- min. 80% thick wool turtle-neck cardigan
- cords or wool pants (when colder, add skirt on top)
- wool socks
- or cotton socks if i'm wearing my new fab winter boots - which are shearling lined and weatherproof.
- gloves of course + scarf (fleece or wool).
- in bitter bite-your-face-off-cold, i wear a dork-band under my hoodie & wrap my scarf to cover my nose... so only my eyes are exposed... oooh sexxxy.:ninja:

So - instead of looking feminine, i go for funky/sporty look. i'm originally from the Caribbean, been here 17yrs & my tolerance for cold has decreased over the years - a part of me dies every winter. i like snow and cold bright sunshiny days.. but give me 3months please, not 6months!

boo!

Well today was -15°C, blustery and icy. I walked to the tube station from my apartment (about a 2 minute walk) and thought I was going to lose a finger or two. I have lived in this climate my entire life (Ontario, Canada), and I still can't figure out cold weather dressing. I guess my biggest problem is boots - what are WARM boots, that still look good??? Please help me, I am going boot shopping this weekend and really don't want to end up buying Uggs!

I am also thinking about investing in a pair or two of ear muffs - what do you think of those? I've seen people wearing headband-style ear warmers but I think they are very ugly! (no offence if any of you wear them, they just aren't for me!)

SILK THERMAL UNDERWEAR!

lots of layers, a wool jacket, scarves, hats, gloves under mittens...

( i'm not excited to be walking all over this huge campus this winter! )

Hi everyone. This is my first post! Although i have been lurking for a while :D

Anyways, this is an excellent question as i always feel so drab in winter. I love feminine mini skirts and nice camis, so winter is definitely not my style. I'm also very tiny and feel like winter clothes just swarm me and make me look even tinier! :( Plus, i think the whole pants, jumper and jacket thing is pretty boring and i can't seem to make it look good.

These layering tips are great! For those of u that wear skirts in winter...do you always wear thick *black* tights with your skirt? I was actually thinking of getting a pink woolen mini skirt cos im more of a pink person than black...but i'm thinking black tights and a light pink mini wouldn't go too well. Any advice?

Im going to Europe for the first time ever in January! (mainly to croatia, but also Italy and maybe Germany) and i want to look good!! Not daggy in oversized jackets and pants :( I just don't think i look good in jackets sadly...i prefer cardigans, etc...but they aren't as warm as jackets.

Does anyone also maybe have pics of stylish winter outfits?
