Gucci S/S 07 Milan

I think some people are being a little harsh. That WWd review sucked. What? Do they think Tom Ford is gonna pop up and start designing for the house again. Please!! Get over yourself people. I know how Gucci started but Sometimes things need to change because the frankly the whole sex thing got old.
But at least people knew what Gucci stood for. Frida has yet to redefine Gucci, not for lack of trying, but for lack of doing anything well.

I don't think people are being nearly as harsh or obsessive about this collection as you make it sound, but merely observing that it is a) unoriginal and b) confusing.

She's welcome to add something new to Gucci but please, she needs to develop her ideas, not jump wildly from one thing to another. Not yet anyway.

I agree with those who've said wwd is on the mark. Yes, we all know that since Giannini started she's made easy to sell clothes that appeal to the young and cool girl market, as opposed to Ford and Faccinetti's high drama, very specific designs.

But she's sacraficed Gucci having an image, even a different one from the one Tom orchestrated. So while the clothes may be cute, fun and wearable, Gucci has definitly lost a lot of it's trendsetting monopoly.

However ... does the Gucci accessories audience care about that? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think many of us here go for the branded/logoed Gucci stuff, right? I suspect the people who loved Tom's design work and the average Gucci customer are completely different (as implied by the WWD review) :innocent:

That's true, I can only speak as a person who follows the fashion end of the Gucci label, so to me the image a house presents is essential. At the end of the day though, I'd be willing to ignore her obvious lack of confidence if she produced stuff that absolutely wowed me.

Sidenote, I find it odd how a lot of the stuff Tom did was critcized for catering to a younger clientele. Honestly, I can't see very much of Frida's stuff looking very good on a woman older than 28. Sure, the jackets and cropped trousers are pretty universally appealing, but those folksy babydoll dresses would look rediculous on a woman.

Think about it, the majority of celebs that have dresses in Gucci lately are in the 18-25 age bracket which, at least imo, is kind of disappointing.

i have to say...i'm impressed...didn't expect it from gucci... i like the dresses very much...and the choice of colours seems to be succesful...for me...

some hints of 60's and some hints of louis vuitton spring 2006... ...

i liked her debut and fall collection better, this one has lack of focus. On one hand you have mod graphics and then you jump to tacky carnaby street boho..i mean stick to one message..I found the topshop unique show much better than this...i mean sure you have one nice gucci dress, but you have 10 ugly ones to go with it in this collection.

yeah, right on! (not to anyone in particular)
i think frida is excellent! THIS is great!

who cares about the bad reviews? THEY are missing the point. come on, what collection nowadays alludes to only ONE specific decade. this is what defines 21st century style: ANYTHING GOES.

look at the way girls are dressing...mixing up the 70's, 60's, and 80's all in one outfit.
look at how many women here ON TFS like this collection.
and who said that "baby doll" dresses are for girls?! look at frida herself, look at what diane von furstenberg wore to her show....:innocent:

i liked her fall collection i just feel changing gears so quickly and that too showing an incoherent collection reduces the credibility of an esteemed house.

not bad
i quite like a few of the outfits
not so crazy about the prints..but it's not tacky which is good
but i see more of her own style instead of gucci sexiness
it's more of a conversative sexiness...im having mix feelings

Hmmmm, I like what I've been seeing in the ads more then whats been on the runway... I love the use of color though.

I don't like it...

It's too much...the colors, the designs, the patterns. My first impression was "omg...whoa!" There is a bit of that sexy Gucci vibe in some of the pieces but the only thing I'm getting "Gucci" is those Gladiator shoes.

new things for gucci...nothing new for fashion. its like etro meets pucci prints, the whole 60's thing we have been seeing since fall 05 with some russian military influence. very disappointed

I'm not excited by this.

while not following in Tom's shoes, it also offers no specific brand direction of it's own. it seems to be a mishmatch of many different things

I'm not an expert at any rate, but this doesn't seem too bad. I like the lower sandals and I'm sure noone here will agree with me but I think they look good and are actually something apart from Gucci loafers I can walk on. #

It seems a little too much of everything but she might just need to settle in. Maybe she's trying too hard for a transition from Ford's style to her own but I don't think even if she'd continued exactly the same style as Tom Ford that that would be appreciated. Lots of people would probably call her unoriginal still for just copying his style and even if Tom Ford himself had continued - the sexy in your face stuff was getting old.
I think Gucci crossed the line where a brand or designer just gets way too popular and people are sick of it for a while.

I dont now, style and elle.com not showed yet the detail shots and the video of the show...

I find it amusing when people complain that they can't find a distinct inspiration for the show. What's wrong with being folk and sixties at the same time? If the show was pure folk it would be horribly unoriginal and ugly, it'll be the same if it was pure sixties too. Fashion is about creativity, mixing and matching things you thought would never fit together, sounding wrong but looking terrificly gorgeous! Frida scored for Gucci!

agreed...
great post!...:flower:

Its pretty but hollow. I'm sure it will be a celeb favorite. I don't hate this but I don't love it either. Perhaps it will grow on me the way Frida's first collection did but I cannot be certain. I agree that there is a certain mismash element to this collection that does not entirely work but there are some very wearable attractive pieces. I almost feel as though I might like Frida's designs more if they were not for Gucci. If this same exact collection were presented under another label perhaps I wouldn't feel the instantaneous negative feeling I get every time I see one of her Gucci collections.

Gucci's strength was in my opinion the fact that it had such a clear cut and definable brand identity. Gucci represented in my mind an urban powerful woman who wasn't afraid of sensuality or intelligence. Yes there was a sexual element but it wasn't (at least not for me) JUST sexy. I always felt as though sex while a consistent selling point of Tom Ford's clothing was really a secondary thing to the concept of power within his designs. Powerful is the word that sprang into my mind whenever I thought of the Gucci woman, it conjured images of vital unique women like Carine Roitfeld as opposed to the more obvious bimbo sex symbols. There was a sexuality to his designs but it was paired with complexity and intelligence. If it were just sex I don't think he would have had any impact on fashion or society. Perhaps thats why I don't entirely understand why sexy/smutty is sometimes the general consensus on Tom Ford's clothes. I "get it" in that I think he absolutely used sex as a marketing tool and absolutely played up that angle to the press because lets face it sex sells but minus that hype when I just look at the clothes what I see are modern strong designs with an overarching vision and deliberate execution.

I cannot say the same for this collection. These outfits however cute they may be lack identity. I am for all my Ford-ist loyalty not opposed to the idea of the evolution of Gucci were there a clear cut or at the very least apparent focus. I don't mind if Gucci isn't in your face any more but there should be some sort of aesthetic connection being made. I see touches of so many eras, designers, ideas but there is no one thing that makes me say "Oh yes, here is Frida's touch. This is her look, her definition of what Gucci should be." Instead when I look at this I think "Hmm. That looks like a top I saw at Miu Miu last season" And I think this has been the case each season since Frida started. There are always some very nice pieces but nothing that defines the brand or her design sensibilities. There is a certain girliness, a light touch but I never get the impression that were seeing Frida's aesthetic as opposed to a composite image of what will sell.

I'll get off my soapbox but it just irks me sometimes. I want so badly to like Gucci but these past few seasons leave me shaking my head.

i thin the sexy in ur face was missing due to the shoes and the accesories put with teh dresses--the whow could have been planned out better. i am waiting for the ad campaign--which is when frida can right all wrongs and really cinch the gucci sex thing onto htese clothes--- its really almost there.. she jsut needs some alterations. i really pray she picks a sizzling girl--- someone who can pull it off.
