Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows *Warning - Thread WILL Contain Spoilers*

Damn! I wanted Harry to end up with Hermonine, but Ginny? What's JK thinking?!?!?!

On Mugglenet it says it was confirmed by JKR, "There is a character who does manage, in desperate circumstances, to do magic quite late in life, but that is very rare..." Who was it? Did I completely miss something?

I was wondering that too.

Does anybody have an answer?

Another H/HR! Go us! According to Emerson (mugglenet owner), we're all delusional but hey, enough of us see it :p

I always felt Ron was more of a comic relief...he has substance but a lot of the times, I felt he was a bit of a loser. Ginny...well, don't get me started. I've said enough. Until the 6th book, she was just a minor blob in Harry's life. So, as cliched as it was I felt Harry and Hermione who were the two strongest (both mentally and physically) characters in the story and therefor, were the best matched.

Alas. :p

BEST BOOK I EVER READ.

It took me 10 hours to read which included short breaks. I wanted to read it carefully to make sure I didn't miss anything. After I then went to sleep for 7 hours, got up, did the food shopping, came home and went back to sleep for another 4 hours and I'm still tired. There was no way I was not going to read the whole book. I couldn't put it down.

JK said that lots of people wouldn't like the book and from reading the comments on the last 6 pages I can see that is true but I just loved it.

There was so much going on. They had to go to different places and the Deathly Hallows twist was brilliant. The fact that Harry and Voldermort were actually descendents from the same family was another great moment. I loved that we found out about Dumbledore's background. I don't care if he was "bad" he redeemed himself by defeating his best friend and teaching kids magic until he died. It was good to meeting Luna's dad and Ron's aunt. I love that Kreacher came over to the good side.

MY VIEWS -

Best Bit: Page 502. Ron and Hermione finally kiss. I had to wait for 6 books and 501 pages but it was worth it. "Oi we are in the middle of a war here" Yeah so it's really now or never" BRILLIANT. I love the way he was at the wedding when Krum showed up and always giving her hugs.

Second Best Bit: Neville Longbottom is the man. I can't wait to see Neville cut the snakes head off in the movie.

Third Best Bit: Before Harry "died" he thought of Ginny. I'm a romantic at heart.

Saddest Bit: When Dobby died. I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Disappointed that No 1: Ginny didn't play a bigger part. She was Harry's love and I'm so glad they got married (how people couldn't see it coming from the first book I just don't get it) but I really thought that something more exciting would of happened like Voldermort would have kidnapped her. Her character had really developed in the last two books so for her not to be in this one as much kind of sucked. Also as mention about her birthday gift to Harry that people didn't like I think that there may have been more to it but 1 Ron came in the room and 2 this is a kids book if you know what I mean.

Disappointed that No 2: We didn't find out what happened to Luna in the epilogue. I wanted her to marry Neville lol. She was such a great character.

Best Character: Ron. Even when he went away for a bit which I agree was random his flipant remarks just cracked me up and he really proved that he was more than just Harry's friend, he was there because it was what he was meant to do. And when Hermione was being tortured by the Malfoy's Ron was just going mental and you could tell he was going to go up there and kick some ***. His lines were the best in the epilogue "If you don't get into Gryffindor your disowned but no pressure" "And don't get too friendly with him, granddad Wesley won't be happy if you marry a pureblood".

Best Line: "Mum I can't give a professor love" James Potter (Jr)

Worst Death No 1: Snapes. It happened too quickly and I really wish he and Harry could have spoken before he died. I was blown away that he knew Lily when they were 10 years old. And now we know that when Petunia says in OoTP "that boy" when discussing the dementors that she was talking about Snape not James.

Worst Death No 2: Bellatrix. Sorry but she should have been killed by Neville. She made his parent's go mental and he should have gotten his payback.

WTF Bit: That nothing happened to the Malfoy's???? They were evil and I really wanted Hermione to really give it to Lucius for being such a prick to her. I guess it made them more human in the end that all they cared about was finding Draco. They really did love him.

(Quotes not exactly as in book as I don't have it with me but you get it)

Gosh! Foul ending!
Call me a blood thirsty cynic but the whole resuscitation thing ruined it for me. I loved, loved, Harry's sacrifice thing and the whole character development and motivations behind it. The Prince's tale and the Forest again chapters were so beautiful.
But then Harry had to pull a Jesus so the 9-years olds could have their happy ending and Harry could run off snog Ginny and have babies with his High-school crush (is the dating pool so small in the wizarding world?).
I just don't like guimauve and I though JK could have worked thing out some other way, a way which included Harry really dying, not 'passing out' for a short while and having a chat with Dumbledore (why on earth the Elder wand killed Harry the first time around, BTW?).
That epilogue thing was the cheesiest thing since George Michael and its only merit was Harry acknowledging Snape's greatness at last.

Things I liked though:

- Luna, every-single lines she was given. It helped that I fell in love with her movie portrayal the week before.
- Harry's death: the whole chapter was what I though the whole series was about. The 6 books clearly prepped harry for the realisations he made in this chapter. Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
- Snape's last line: the fact that the last thing he wanted to see was Lilly's eyes touched me way beyond the (rather cheesy) descriptions of him lusting/chasing/crying after her. Now that's what I call undying love.
-Dumbledore's confession: At last Albus was given dimension, humanity and true feelings. I loved, loved it, though I was pissed the chapter lead to Harry's comeback.
- Kreacher: very well done plot twist
- The three brothers tale: I loved it. I hope JK does write the whole book for charity
-Voldy: I love, love Voldy. Superb villain. Superb death.

Didn't like:

- Will you die already Harry?
- Ron: I am sorry but his is a useless git, as far as I am concerned
- Ron + Hermione: ugh, gross.
- None of the really central character dying. I mean, What?

That's all I can think off for now.

Did Harry defeat Voldemort purely by luck? The only reason he won was because the Elder wand recognized him as the master and rebounded the Avada curse to Voldemort.

If Voldy and Harry actually dueled properly, like two different wands, I'm sure Harry would've gotten his butt handed to him.

I just feel that Harry won by fluke.

I really liked that Harry came back. He had the choice, and he choose to go where he might suffer even more. He was brave to do that

I was upset with Ron, how he just gave up after Harry didnt have a detailed plan on how to get the Horcruxes. But he came back, and he did help in the fight

I never linked Harry and Hermoine romantically. I never linked Harry and Ginny that way either till now. I was excited when Ron and Hermoine finally kissed, and then in the end when they were married, thought it was cute :)

I was expecting a central character to die, meaning Harry, Hermoine, or Ron. After Harry decided on sacrificing himself, I accepted his death but I was so glad when he came back. I was really happy that no one from the trio died, because that would ruin the chance of a happy ending

I was really confused about Harry and Ginny ending up together but I suddenly thought that maybe Ginny is supposed to be parallel to his mom, Lily. If you think about it, they're both red-heads, independent, brave, loyal to their friends/family, etc. etc. It WAS random how quickly Ginny transformed though. If she were a more prominent character in the beginning, then maybe it wouldn't have been such a surprise. And talk about Harry having an Oepidus complex -_-

My thoughts on Ginny (aka my favorite character :p):
  • In the beginning of the book, she is mentioned quite a lot -- Harry clearly cares for her and I love how she (paraphrased) answers Harry's unspoken questions about the family.
  • She's underage; how much of a role can she be expected to play? She's also got a very overprotective family. Despite this, she battles at Hogwarts and even Harry notes she castes an impression spell.
  • You can tell she clearly wanted to do more to fight and was willing to give up her life.
  • I loved the part about Harry taking out the map and watching her dot. :crush: I thought that was a good scene to display their relationship.
ETA: Also, I think if we had been shown more of Ginny, people would have complained more, like in the 6th book. You can't have it both ways. :p

Couldn't have said better myself Day. I agree on the map thing. So sweet.

Harry & Ginny are meant to be together just like Ron and Hermione. There are hints all the way through the books.

I don't have any problem with a Ginny/Harry relationship, but I wish Rowling would have developed it a little further beforehand. Maybe if she was given a role in the story similar to Neville it'd have been better. It felt like it kind of sprung up randomly, and all of a sudden Harry's dying for her.

And Label Basher, I'd never thought of it, but it'd be so much better if Neville killed Bellatrix, that'd tie up the story perfectly.

On a more random note, I wish that we could have seen into all of the house common rooms. Doesn't seem finished when we've seen three of four...but Hufflepuff plays very little part in anything, so it makes some sense.

Wooooo! After a day and a half day vigil on my sofa which sad to say now has a permanent imprint of my rear end in it, I'm finally finished!! I'm pretty exhilarated overall. Well, four hours ago actually but I fell asleep almost immediately after doing a little happy dance. I love how everything sort of came full circle in this book, with all the old locations, objects and smaller characters having a part to play. Everything/everyone had it's place, they weren't just random factors in the series. Such great detail. Have to admit I was getting a little impatient during their 'nomadic period', fell asleep several times lol but can you blame me.. was royally pissed when they lost Grimmauld Place to that Death Eater, all I could think was poor Kreacher losing his new companions when he's finally happy and well-adjusted.

The second half of the book was stellar esp The Prince's Tale, I was utterly transfixed. Loved everything to do with Lily Evans. I knew Snape would turn out to be 'good' since Book 6 was named after him, but who knew it was to such extent!! I kept waiting and waiting for him to show some sign of a furtive attempt to aid Harry, but silly as I was, didn't connect the doe Patronus to him. I was completely misled from the ‘Snape secretly loved Lily therefore explaining his intense hatred for James & Harry’ theory with the Levicorpus Mudblood incident, sneaky sneaky Jo. I re-read Snape’s death after The Prince’s Tale and absolutely bawled myself silly at his last words, “Look at me” cos he wanted to see Lily’s eyes and him declaring his enduring love for her to Dumbledore. Sob! I cheered and cried and pounded my fists into cushions alarming my poor mother at intervals when they returned to Hogwarts and discovered the band of rebels, LOVED Neville coming into his own!! (you can see why the prophecy was applicable to him), and the reunion in the Room of Requirement. The uprising of the professors, students, DA and the Order and subsequent siege on the school was so thrilling I literally had to get up, jump around and slap stuff every couple of pages. That bit’s going to be so great in the last movie!^_^ The episode with Kreacher really warmed my heart and Dobby, poor poor wonderful, loyal Dobby. How fantastic was it when Kreacher led the house elves in the charge against the Death Eaters!?! They better not cut that out of the movie, they’ve managed to cut Dobby out far too many times. What Harry did for him was perfectly poignant. ‘Here lies Dobby, a free elf’ just killed me. Mrs Weasley had me kicking up my heels even though I was terrified she would die, she was fierce!

And the final showdown with Voldie was perfect, more than I could’ve hoped for. The thing is Harry is just sort of a normal relatable kid who's good at Quidditch thrown into extraordinary circumstances when his mother sacrifices herself to save him and his good heart, good friends, self-sacrifice, choices, and good luck or perhaps, destiny are ultimately what saves him against a terrifyingly powerful wizard. The whole series I kept waiting for him to display some amazing latent powers that would decimate Voldie, and was repeatedly disappointed when none seemed imminent but then I realized it’s not just about having exceptional talents. The only thing is I wanted to hear more about Teddy Lupin for some reason, poor kid, Lupin and Tonks dying broke my heart even though I suspected Lupin would die since he had been so wildly happy at the birth of his child. I thought Harry & Ginny would adopt him but it doesn’t say who he’s living with… his grandma I suppose? Was she killed or was it just Ted Tonks? Fred's passing was so sad. Ginny had a smaller role than I would’ve expected but that was fine since she didn’t really appeal to me in this book though I liked her in the last. I mean seriously, the jealousy and the thing with Cho, Harry and Luna was just rude. I kinda wanted to find out what happened to Luna and Cho, did she die in the fray or live happily with Michael Corner? Lol Also wanted to know what Harry’s parents did for a living and what him and Ginny ended up becoming but perhaps that’ll be in the encyclopedia. Dudley being decent to Harry also made me grin a lot in the beginning, surprise surprise, he has a soul.

I'm just happy the main trio weren't snuffed out. Can't believe it's over but it was a supremely satisfying and exciting read and a fitting ending for these characters that I've grown to love so much. Thanks for the great, great fun JK.

I though she was referring to Hagrid who used his umbrella to try and mend the bike during the Death Eater attack, no?

But Hagrid's done magic before. He even attended Hogwarts...for a couple of years, anyway.

B)I just brought the book and flipped right to the epilogue
Well the epilogue was a bit boring.. it didn't have enough detail!! Bt I loved that it was such a cliched fairy tale ending  That the good triumphed the bad and that they had kids  well.. I wish it was cho instead of Ginny though.. anyways.. does anyone know if cho gets a mention in the book at all??

PLEASE??

She does, not a big part, but still mentioned some.

From what I can remember, she's just mentioned when people are brought to Hogwarts to fight.

She offers to go up to the Ravenclaw common room with Harry to help him find the Horcrux, but Ginny (who seems jealous ) suggests that Luna do it instead.

There might be a little more, I can't really remember. :flower:
