I always wanted to say something about that too Meowmix. If these girls are considered indie, then who is mainstream? These girls are just young, they are still pretty big Hollywood sellouts.
I agree that some are prety much sellouts, but others balancee mainstream roles w/ indies (see my post on 1st page)
Kirsten Dunst is pretty mainstream IMO but she's done indies (the virgin sduicides, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Levity)
Emmy Rossom's last 2 movies (Phantom of the Opera and The Day after Tomorrow ) were very mainstream but before that almost all her movies are indie and she's returning to independant film for her next role. She was nominated for an Independant Spirt Award for Nola. She was also in indies like Songcatcher, An American Rhapsody, Passionada, and Happy Now?.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is what most people would call indie but she's also done mainstream stuff like Mona Lisa Smile.
Kiera Knightly went very mainstream for the POTC films but she also did stuff like Bend it like Beckham which was an indie hit, and lesser know films like pure, and the Hole.
I guess that the catagories indie and mainstream aren't really black and white. It makes sense that a lot of actresses are better know for their mainstream roles, b/c they get more publicity for them, but that doesn't mean that they don't also do quircky, smaller films as well
