I write Angie out of pure laziness in not wanting to write out her whole name everytime.

Somehow I was picturing Tim Curry in the role. He's good at sensitive portrayals like this:

And Smartarse, most nominally educated people do hate political correctness.

why are people "politically correct" for pointing out the absurd?

Since when are political correctness and intelligence mutually exclusive? You are draining race of significance to a point of viewing it as ok that an apple play an orange in a movie. Actually sounds more "politically correct" than anything anyone else has posted and smacks of the kind of colorblindness that obscures the racial distinctions that do exist whether we like them or not.

Captain Lydia:  I'll take karma so my girl doesn't kill me. :flower:

Not intelligence - education. I think that the dangers of political correctness can be pretty unapparent.

And I am not saying don't discuss race. But boycotting a movie which may deal with some important issues about prejudice is not the way to go about things. I am saying that there are more effective ways of dealing with it in Hollywood than stirring up controversy over a film casting decision.

And I take great objection to the simile of an apple and an orange. Angelina and Marianne are humans aren't they. And that is what it should come down to. Furthermore Marianne is half white. They went with a white woman instead of a half white woman because the white woman happens to be a megastar. I don't think this particular decision is that blatant. Now 'Memoirs of a Geisha?'... whole different story. But I think what is most important that the Japanese experience, or the half-white experience, or the Jewish experience, be portrayed correctly.

Whether or not that will happen will depend upon Angie's acting ability. i.e. this movie is doomed

I vote with mellowdrama; I think Tim Curry would be the best pick for this role

I'd write more but my hands are frozen from being outside.....can't believe it snowed in Virginia in October! Gah!

It is a really funny weather year isn't it? Poor you :(

And Tim Curry? Nah he's too white. Let's go with Chow Yun Fat.

since when are political correctness and education mutually exclusive, then? Especially since academics are usually the ones branded with the label.

i get what you're saying about marianne having equal claims to both racial labels (as ridiculous as such labels are) given her mixed background. What i object to is white actors in black face. It's highly offensive for a host of reasons--historical, cultural, and social. And it's all done because hollywood traditionally sees white actors as more bankable than actors of color.

I think for the sake of art it has been done before... Al Jolson anyone? Jolie isn't the first and definitely won't be the last.

Agreed. To me this is just another Black Minstrel show.:innocent:

And funny how now Angelina is "bi-racial" just as Marianne when she's always been honored as a white actress. I would have never guessed she was half Native the way she and the media presents herself...oh the things people say to fit their agendas.

THAT, I understand.

honestly--mariane isn't even that dark. and zoe saldana is waay darker than her, as is gloria reuben. thandie newton is the onnly actress that comes to mind of a similar complexion---but quite frankly(they aren't exactly twins). so what?? Mrs. Pearl wanted her buddy--who is considered super hot to play her. the prospect of it was quite flattering for her, I'm sure.
by the way, i have had a nigerian firned tell me he was shocked that angelina was white--as her facial features say otherwise--- adn they really do.. if that is one drop native, then the moors must have been partying/living it up in her family's ancestral french town---cuz she is def. not a "white lady"

I understand wanting Angelina Jolie to play you in a movie just because most people find her to be a beauty icon, but I also understand why people are upset about a white woman playing a woman of mixed race especially when that woman of mixed race has a darker complection.

It would also be nice if they gave some other struggling actress the role, but obviously they picked Angelina. She is a big name that'll draw money and in the end money is all the movie industry cares about... despite what they may say.

u guys are actingliek angelina looks liek a typial white woman. its nto just her lips. its her cheekbones, eye shape, and nose---she looks like middle easterner. infact it was quoted she noticed she completly blended in during her visit to afghanistan. she claimed many of the peopel had no idea from ehr appearance she wasn't a native. excluding her skin tone--- angelina looks more mixed than white.

OT, but Middle Easterns are Caucasoids.
